This is exactly the kind of fluting jig i was looking for. Watched two fluting jig videos prior to this and they were designed for a large table and were fixed jigs. This portable adjustable sliding jig is an excellent design. I need this kind of jig because I want to flute some posts that are already attached to my deck so I need a jig I can use vertically.

Colin - This is the second time I have watched this particular video. Great trim router jig. One suggestion - There is room for a tape measure along the outside rails that could be used for positioning so that the number of turns needn't be counted to get repeatable flutes.

Today afternoon, April 18th 2019, KZbin showed me on my smartphone, that you've released a new video. Later on at home I could not find any new video. So I went through your older videos and found this one. 16 months old, and I did not watch it till now... That's a very handy little jig. I can imagine to do a lot of things with that. Thanks for sharing

I used to have to make flutes in the same width of material, repeatedly, so I made a fluting jig that only required centering (5 flutes), and from then on, it only required the loosening of a big knob, and sliding the top half, over the bottom half to the next flute, and doing that again, to make three predetermined and repeatable locations, so I could get the same 5 flutes. The design was based on two sections of the fluted material, putting one on top of the other, and the flats on one pieces, went into the flutes on the other. It took a lot of time figuring that out, and since the pieces were made of wood, eventually the thing began to deteriorate.

Making two flutes is easy. Making three or more and getting the spacing correct is hard. Your indexing threaded-rod system is the perfect solution.

Just for your infomation, you can find 316 stainless steel bars in hardware store with pre drill holes in various size. They come with a lot different length and width. Put a 3/4“ x 8“ under a 1“ x 8“, all you need is couple of screws and make a pair of this. you will have a stainless steel dovetail rail. I use it on my home made lathe. If the plastic is thicker than the bar, shim it with washer. Wood rail can have problems with moisture, but stainless steel don't. Besides that, the rail is as hard as a coffin nail. An advantage when you have something rotating 3000 turns per minutes. Worth a look.😊

Neat little tool. I think I'll make one. If you make it long enough you could use is for a flattening tool as well. To make the slot down the center, why not just put a cutter in the router a bit bigger than the fluting bit and cut a perfectly centered slot?

What do you use for clear plastic? I picked up some off Amazon. Seems pretty brittle, splinters easy when trying to countersink holes.

Instead of the T-nut use a thread insert that has coarse threads for wood on the outside and machine screw threads on the inside. I used 4 of these to replace wood screws to hold a cover plate over a plumbing access and they worked great.

Nice design Colin. If I might, you could add a small pointer to the fabbed clear base and a 12" ruler to the hold-down rail. This way you don't need to count crank turns. Which would also help if you were making several identical pieces. Merry Christmas, HoHoHo

Very nice Colin, this looks to be a great jig! I will have to build one like that. Always enjoy watching your videos, they are always inspiring. Any idea how to do a "Tapered flute" using this jig? What I mean is where at the ends of the flute the router is slowly dropped or raised, while the router is moving so the flute comes to a point. I can only think of using a shim type of stock so the router plate would ride up/down on the face of the shim stock. Love the jig. : ) Andrew

Nice jig. Kinda needs one more piece of wood tho. A thin spacer strip, maybe a piece of yardstick on edge, at the beginning of the flute might give you some 'careful' backwards cut to remove any burning.

I like to watching your projects, that was perfect. By my opinion i will add to oposite side of the handle a moovable slid fence to hold the router firmly in position and also a ruler us a guide to keep dimentions in sequence.
