Surprisingly for me...at 3 months from Surgery...I graduated from the wheelchair to the a walker to a cane going to doctor appointments . I was still using pain meds during my outpatient Therapy sessions...At 6 months...I was 70 percent...At 8 months I was approximately 80 percent and finally at 10 months I am finally at 85 to 90 percent. Note 1: I was not back to normal at 3 months...but applaud the patients that were. Note 2: Covid attacked my Knee and killed the bone ( no bloodflow)...which would put me on a different Recovery Scale than regular " Arthritis " Total Knee Replacements.

My wife is at 2 months after surgery. She's had a very hard time of it due to the fact that she has RA. Her hands and wrists really hurt her on and off which makes it difficult to grab the walker and cane. This hindered her a lot. She had a therapist the first month twice a week and knows the exercises which she continues to do. Also she suffers from depression on and off. Her range of motion is about 100 and she is moving a lot easier. Complains of tightness in the knee especially in the morning but not pain. It has been extremely difficult for both of us but it looks like now we're beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

These other medical conditions certainly can be a hindrance and obstacle during recovery, but I'm very happy to see she is start to see some improvements. I hope she continues to see improvements and feels better each day.

Not gona lie. Im so frustrated & disappointed. I was doing ok. Hit 105 flex & 0 ext by wk 5. By wk 8was starting to walk without my cain, & less swelling but still some nerve issues & muscle atrophy in my quad, but overall was doing ok. Doing exercises twice a day, PT twice a wk, & even got a TENs device. Then at wk 10 my PT said if i can’t get past 105 I would need a MUA & said i need to push through the pain. So i increased my exercises to 3x a day & increased intensity to the point of severe pain. 😫 Now my knee is swollen as a watermelon!!! 🤦🏻‍♂️🥺 Gona give it a rest for a few days & doing a lot of elevation & ice to try to get this swelling down. Gona reschedule my PT until i feel better. Don’t over do it guys. As i heard it in a video consistency beats intensity!!! 😎

I'm sorry you've gone through this experience, but thank you for sharing as this is a good lesson to others...there will be pain this is the nature of rehab and recovery after surgery, but when it comes to exercises we need to find a happy medium with intensity. Enough intensity to have a benefit and cause change in the tissues but not too high an intensity that you have a significant aggravation of symptoms and then can't do essentially anything but rest and wait for everything to calm down... I hope you feel better soon and can continue with your rehab and hopefully regain that last bit of range of motion you need.

@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
If you are walking well and your pain is under control then I wouldn't be overly concerned about the range of motion restriction. Would be be good if you had some more motion? yes, but it sound like you are functioning fine right now. I would recommend continuing with your range of motion exercises most days but otherwise just go about your normal activities and routine.

I am one month out from a TKR and had some issues with sciatic nerve which hurt more than the TKR. I got a epidural shot which slowly made the pain subside. I use a CTC -7 Cold Therapy Machine which helped greatly along with two PlasmaFlow compression selves. I feel comfortable not using a cane or walker around the house. The Zingers were an eye opener each time they happened and have subsided quite a bit. I still have some swelling but that to is subsiding. I use a small paint (2”) roller to massage my leg instead of a kitchen roller easier to handle and easier on the muscles. Make sure you do your PT and take a stool softener if taking meds or any type of pain killer for you will get constipated. Thanks for the video it helps a lot.

Hello, I had my Right Knee Replacement Surgery, on Sept. 9. I had Physical Therapy twice a Week, for 2 Months. Then, I was discharged, because my Health Ins. only covered for 2 Months of P.T. I am still having a lot of Stiffness in my Knee, and Pain. Hard and Hurts to go from a Sitting, to Standing Position. I still can't Walk up and down Stairs, normally, yet. Can only take one Step at a Time. I have been Icing and Elevating it, on and off. Helps, temporarily. I admit I don't do my Exercises as often as I should. Do you have any Advice or Suggestions for me? Thanks, Maryanne
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
I recommend continuing with your range of motion bending and straightening exercises and trying to incorporate some form of physical activity most days of the week, this may be walking, pool exercises, exercise bike or something else… your knee and body is still healing and recovering and you need to continue to build strength back… as you do things will slowly get easier and easier… motion is lotion, it’s important to keep the knee and yourself moving, even if you start with just a little bit and build up slowly over time.

12 weeks post Op.Have about 120 degrees Flex. Walking style is pretty much normal compared to pre-Op.I can walk up stairs most of the time without using the banister to support me.Coming downstairs is harder but I'm able to do it slowly with only support half the time. I do get pain at night and the leg is stiff and sore when I wake up. Have to do some very slow small warm ups till it feels better. About 5 to 10 mins.Been do P/Therapy for the last 7 weeks. Have 2 more weeks to go. I go 2 times a week. I'm 59..The most important thing is to remember everyone is different. I'm hoping another 2 to 3 months then I can get back to work. Cheers.

What do you feel the range of motion should be when you do it yourself with pain ..what degrees . I'm getting 117 -122 With pain.. When my Netherapist does it I can get to 125 ,-126 with more than normal pain . Again at eleven weeks is this acceptable or should I be Have better range of motion by now thanks
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
This range of motion both by yourself and with the therapist assist is well within normal. The pain with this range of motion will continue to be less significant over time. If you want the absolute number, you may want to get to 125 or more doing it by yourself and gain a few more degrees bend, but your range of motion is at a good spot for 11 weeks and you should be able to comfortable do most all daily tasks and activities with this level of mobility.

I’m very close to 12 weeks post-op and a month post-MUA. I am nowhere near close to resuming my old life. Very painful to sit at a table, can’t sleep in a bed, limp when walking. Persistent pain and discomfort. I’ve had 31 PT visits and I’ve worked out on my own about 2 hours daily. What are my options? I had been very active before, am only 65 and greatly regret having had TKR. My life is VERY limited now.
@KneeReplacementTherapists
@KneeReplacementTherapists Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your struggles. I recommend continuing with PT and exercises with emphasis on range of motion and strength. If you haven't already, have your PT review what you are doing for exercise and help determine the optimal types of exercise and volume. Also review your pain management strategies. Are you taking pain medicine still? Ice, heat, electrical stimulation, massaging? Understand that recovery can take up to 6 months or longer and it is not abnormal to still have some pain and symptoms at this point. Continued consistency with appropriate volume and type of exercises, good multi-modal pain management, and time and patience are your best tools right now. Hope this helps!

@KneeReplacementTherapists

This takes strength and range of motion, especially because most couches you tend to sink into the cushion. Try scooting forward first and pushing up with your arms too. This will get easier as you continue to build back strength and mobility.

This is hard to tell based on what your personal goals and expectations are after surgery. With reduced range of motion it just makes a lot of things more difficulty such as getting up from a chair, going up and down stairs, putting on your shoes and socks... and things more challenging such as kneeling, getting up and down from the floor, and more

It does take a long time to feel fully recovered and some lingering pain and swelling is very common. For most people by 6-12 months you really start to feel closer to your normal self although some lingering symptoms can remain, these are usually much less intense and much less frequent.
