After my video on my field sharpening kit, this Work Sharp system was highly recommended to me. In this video, we do some Mora knife and Council Tool axe sharpening with the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener and discuss along the way. While this will not replace my field sharpening kit, it is an excellent piece of kit. Check out my field sharpening kit video and where to pick up this sharpener in the links below:

I have one of these sharpeners. It's a great little tool with many features. The removable plates add to each functionality. The strop is more important than some might think if they've never used one for sharpening tools. Highly recommend this sharpener.

Once again I have picked up yet another excellent tip from you re: taking the diamond plates off and sharpening the hatchet that way. THANK YOU! I love this little guy, I finally achieved the blade sharpness I want because of this system.

I have been using this sharpener now for about a year. I am not good at all at sharpening knives so the guides work great for me. You hit the nail on the head when you talked about using this if you're new to sharpening, I sharpen every knife I have using this and get a great edge on all of them. Good review Dave on what I consider a quality product

You know, I've always been partial to Japanese water stones but since I lost my little 1000 stone, I was just about to order a DMT Diafold, then I saw your vid here and remembered that Worksharp actually sent me one of these Field Sharpeners to try out a few years ago. I set it aside and never once touched it, thinking it to be kind of gimmicky, but from the look of things, it may be worth trying out. It would be lighter and take less space a couple stones and a ceramic rod.

There's a small space under the diamond plates where the instructions are held. You can take that out and put a couple chunks of green compound in there so that you can load up the strop with it whenever you are in the field.
@HighCarbonSteelLove

Yes, I have seen that and I have pondering several things to keep in there for the future! I have been keeping a sail needle in there, as of late. Some extra small chunks of compound would fit nicely! Thank you for watching! -Dave

It's a great little piece of kit. Really nice to have with you even in just a day bag. Also, you may have already thought of this but if not, you can store a little compound and wax under the course file. Or even another mini survival kit. I keep a little piece of compound and wax in mine along with a small ferro rod and a cotton ball with vaseline. The files will throw decent sparks. They won't through huge molten lava unless you file and square off the edges a little. As they are without filing, it'll work well enough to light a cotton ball with petroleum jelly. Now obviously I can't imagine a scenario where all I have for fire is my sharpener and no other tools, its one of those multipurpose uses that I like to know just in case. A back of the brain / piece of mind thing. Keep up the good work. Plus the cotton ball with petroleum jelly is a good back up to the wax for protecting your steel. I know you love multipurpose as much as I do, so I figured I'd throw that out there for you. Keep up the great videos my friend. Always a pleasure watching.

Hi Dave, I am terrible at sharpening, you said this would be a good system for a beginner, is this something that one could use for sometime as they are gaining experience at sharpening, or would they have to supplement it with another kit? Thanks!!
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
Hey, Lee! Very nice to hear from you, my friend! How are the grandkids? How is your spring going? IMHO, I think this would be the only tool you would need, as you are gaining experience. You can always upgrade to other items as you go, but as far as getting used to your sharpening, this would do the trick. Also, as you saw in this video, the better you get and don't feel like you need the guides, this works fine without using them. Not to mention, it a great price for all of the tools you get in one sharpener. I would be very interesting in hearing how you like it, should you pick one up. Take care! -Dave

Thanks Dave and Thank You for remembering the boys!!! I am not seeing them as much now that it is summer, my wife watched them during the school year. Spring is going ok so far...I have not had much woods times though. too many "duties" right now LOL. I hope I can find some time to just get out there, even if it is just for the afternoon to "recharge" my batteries and clear some of the junk away by just being in the woods! I will pick up one of these sharpening kits and will let you know how I do...I am always a bit concerned about messing up the blade. This will be a big help. Thanks For the review my Friend!!

Lee Ralph Thats great to hear, Lee! Tell the boys I said "hi" when you see them. Busy summers..I know what it's like..haha! I look forward to hearing all about your return to the woods and definitely keep me posted on how you like this sharpener! And don't worry too much about messing up and edge...I have thew off edges many times and over the course of time, but they are not difficult to fix. When I was a much younger man, I practiced on cheap knives...folders, kitchen knives, etc until I moved onto my woods blades and I never did enough damage to where it was unrepairable. When it came to sharpening, my dad always told me not to worry, as you aren't going to "hurt" the knife or axe. You will do just fine, Lee! -Dave
