@1:43 was the wood angled a little ? Why didn't the sanding belt made a plat surface ?
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 8 жыл бұрын
Yep! It's slightly angled, the two bolts stick out from the bottom of the piece so that you can grind a bevel keeping a costant angle :) I found that working freehand on such thin stock is really hard!

You man got some skills. I've always been fascinated by crafting stuff like that and make my own collection but i can't afford buying all those machines and only using them once in a while. Are drill and dremel enough to make the finish ( polishing the blade and making the handle ) ?
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I would say angle grinder and drill. Dremel can work for something small like this but it would be damn slow and also very expensive in terms of bits.. Look for a 20bucks angle grinder if you don't have one :)

Brilliant job! Well done! Nice video too, with a few great tips. A question: in the video you use a dremel, would you suggest me as a beginner on a budget (!) to go for that as my first 'power tool? ;-) I understand it is quite versatile, but I'm wondering if a good one can resist the tough job of cutting steel. Is it a good choice in lieu of say a angle grinder, in order to save little money and add to precision?
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! I would totally go for an angle grinder as a first tool for knifemaking, the dremel is handy but you have a really hard time profiling a blade with that... Also consider that the part I cutted with the dremel tool was just a vouple of cm long and the thickness of that steel is just 2mm :) moreover you can work most of the bevel with an angle grinder and it takes lot of material away quickly! A dremel is precise but can't do that at all.

@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 жыл бұрын
Hi! :) Thanks man! I made this one as a prototype and it worked out really well. It's just a piece of wood with two bolts on the back, the blade is secured with screw and there is a piece of hardened steel to make the plunge line straight :) I might build a steel one soon, wood tend to burn and deform with heat and water xD
@icaro1728
@icaro1728 7 жыл бұрын
Black Beard Projects that's cool, do you know the angle or you adjusted it with the bolts and washers underneath? very cool ideas and music
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 жыл бұрын
You can calculate the angle but for this I just went for trial and error :) the angle is adjusted by turning the two bolts up or down (there is a nut wedged in the bottom of the jig) This can be improved in many ways anyway, I'm projecting a new one already xD

Look online for 'high carbon steel' like 1095 or 1070 :) These kind of steel are easy to heat treat
@justinz.4069
@justinz.4069 6 жыл бұрын
Looking back at this comment, I ended up buying tool steel and making this knife ! I went with 1095 carbon steel, I did it and it turned out flawless, I also tried using a metal ruler to make a home-made shank! I bring it to college as a paper cutter since I can't bring the one made with tool steel, and it holds an edge.
