Knife Restoration [Very Rusty Old Bayonet]

Forgotten Shine Restoration

2 жыл бұрын

An old rusty knife is the object in this restoration video with ASMR. The bayonet was in a very bad condition and I had to do a lot of rework, respectively restoration here. I had to remove rust (with electrolysis), weld, grind, file, drill, polish, turn on the lathe, glue and more.
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The knife was extremely rusty, so I used rust remover and a screwdriver to remove the coarse rust and electrolysis to remove the rest. Subsequently, I welded and ground the very deep pitting. I continued this restoration by hardening the blade and grinding it with sandpaper to 1200 grit and then polishing it. I also had to restore the handle for the most part by welding and grinding it. The new handle scales are made of oak, which were perfectly matched. For this I had to turn small bolts of brass on the lathe. Finally, everything was glued together and the shiny bayonet was ready.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: pin punch, hammer, rust remover, pliers, welding machine, welding helmet, slag hammer, files, wire brush, propane torch, sandpaper, laboratory power supply, lathe, angle grinder, belt grinder, two-component glue

I don't think it's a bayonet. It doesn't seem to have a mechanism by which you could attach it to a musket or a rifle. It actually looks more like a Bauernwehr knife, and the bit protruding from the side of the guard is called a Nagel (german for "nail"), and as far as I know, was indeed used for hand protection.

I think it’s important to take a rare tool, car, etc as found with rust and dirt, do the nitty-gritty stuff like chipping and scrubbing the dirt and rust ( as our ancestors did) away rather than going right away to sandblasting. That is why I love your channel so much! Back to the basis. Thanks beautiful jobs

I think the pitting adds to the overall good look of the knife. Also on a side note, the knife edge can be honed a bit more. Bayonets are piercing weapons. Their knife edge is really sharp. Overall another excellent video from FSR :)

Not necesarily, the tip of a Mosin-Nagant's bayonet is basically just a flathead screwdriver that you can disassemble the gun with. Not sharp but enough of a point to run it through someone.

As part of pre-deployment training we had to do a weapons refresher and the entire class was people about to deploy. So the instructor was showing us everything that can be affixed to the end of our M-16s. He showed us a bayonet and told us "If the person in charge says 'You're gonna need this!", Know you are royally screwed. So in that vein, I saw you cut it shorter and immediately thought, "Ah yes, let's make our close combat weapons even shorter! This will only end well..." The restoration looks great, and my bosses have always hated me for being a smart ass!

Since this is a bayonet, I really would've liked to see you actually test it in ways that put it to a real test at the end instead of just cutting a tomato. Also, what are your (or anyone else's) thoughts on performing so much welding on the blade? At the very least I think you should've normalized the whole blade in a furnace for an hour or two (~900C/1650F) after the welding to get a (more) uniform microstructure prior to your heat treatment, but I understand if you don't have access to equipment like that. I'm afraid that because there's so much welded material on the blade edge that if you ever tried to actually use it for its intended purpose or put it through a 'Forged In Fire' style testing it would shatter pretty quickly or immediately roll an edge. Do you know how old this might be? How'd you come into possession it? Do you have any idea what kind of firearm this would've fit on the end of? I'm always curious of the history and how other restorers wind up in possession of the things they restore! Keep at it! -CR
@ForgottenShineRestoration
@ForgottenShineRestoration 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the detailed feedback! Yes, unfortunately I do not yet have such equipment available and yes it is a very difficult issue that the blade is now "destroyed" in the metal structure, but you can always make it up in due course. Unfortunately have no info at all where the bayonet was found or how old it is. I have also searched for a very long time on which weapon this bayonet was once put, but unfortunately I could not find anything at all... I fear soon that it is not from the first or second world war, but for that again condition would be too good, right?
@CatalystRestorations
@CatalystRestorations 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForgottenShineRestoration I'm hopeless on identifying firearms and their accessories, so hopefully another viewer than shed some light on it! But that amount of corrosion is certainly possible if it is indeed from either of the world wars. 80-100+ years of environmental exposure can really take its toll!
@Restorology
@Restorology 2 жыл бұрын
@@ForgottenShineRestoration Hi. Hopefully you won't be using this blade in the way it was intended (!!) so heat treating it in this case is not so important but if you ever want to do it without a proper oven, you can easily build a homemade forge out of bricks, dirt, hardwood charcoal, and a hair dryer. I build it in a wheelbarrow to move it around! If you want to see it, take a look at how I did it in the axe restoration video on my channel. It's really easy and it worked really well. Cheers!

Normally the great limitation with trying to restore rusty steel items is that one can remove the rust, but that also removes the steel from the item. It is interesting how now one can rebuilt (not just remove) metal by using a welder to add steel back for a more complete restoration.
@IanDaviesRules
@IanDaviesRules 2 жыл бұрын
yes, but remember that the added steel is not fully hardenable. It is mild steel as opposed to high carbon steel. So it looks nice and can cut veggies, but be careful when relying on it to hold up to real damage.

Amazing work on the blade. It almost looked unsalvageable with the corrosion. And I think turtle appeared six times.

That was a lot of work. Looks great. What setting did you use on the welder? I am about to weld pits on a blade thinner than this and I am a little worried about burning through the blade. Cheers!
@ForgottenShineRestoration
@ForgottenShineRestoration 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! It was very difficult to find a good setting, because the material is different thickness everywhere, you do not know if you just weld in a hole, the surface quality is poor due to the rust! I can only tell you I also fell through the sheet and try it best, start from the bottom ;)

It was possibly manufactured hundreds of years ago, and it isnt a bayonet, its a german fighting knife known as a bauernwehr, used in the late middle ages and renaissance

Excellent work! 👏🏻 I always wonder two things when I watch your videos: 1. Where do you get all these rusty and old items from? And 2. What do you do after the restoration? Do you sell them or do you have them in a display case at home?

I look daily on all Internet sites where you can buy something and there you will quickly find. I keep the items and put them on my shelf, no one is allowed to touch them let alone use them. 😂
