In this video, I review the Wicked Edge Gen 3 Pro knife sharpener and compare it to two other sharpening systems. As a custom knife maker, I've used many different sharpeners, but the @WickedEdgePrecisionSharpeners Gen 3 Pro stood out as the clear winner. Its precision and consistency make it a great investment for anyone looking to sharpen their knives. In this video, I'll show you how the Wicked Edge performed and why it's become my go-to sharpener.

I just bought a Tormek double rotary wet grindstone machine with rotary leather stropper from Sweden. The machine comes with a lot of different angle jigs for knifes axes and chisels. In addition, I bought an extra 4000 grit rotating Japanese polishing whet stone for this machine. All of this was a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Wicked Edge Gen 3 pro pack. The Wicked edge is just a small sharpening jig for the table. And it is just an insane rip-off all together, compared to the more professional machine with all those accessories from Sweden. The price of Wicked Edge products is complete madness.

The more professional Tormek swedish rotating whetstone machine with rotating leatherstropper is less than half the price of the Wicked Edge III pro pack. And it can do the job in a fraction of the time and effort.

Great review. Personally, I no longer use the WE system, it's just too slow. I'm strictly sharpening with the 2x72 with my new sharpening attachment. Stay tuned, I'll have a video of it next month. Maybe I'll send you one. 😉

Great review...thanks. I own the WE130 and the biggest upgrade, to prevent scratching the blade on tall knives, is a set of clamping two-piece shaft collars from McMaster-Carr. With them on the guide rods, you can prevent the sharpening stone from dropping below the edge of the blade and causing scratches from contacting the face of the blade.

Very nice video. Over the years ive acquired a few systems and a handful of hand stones of different types chasing my preffered way of sharpening. Normally i hand sharpen with a dmt fine plate or spyderco ceramic bench stone then strop. Over time my technique shows its imperfections and the secondary gets all buggered so ill use my kme for small slipjoints and stuff or the wicked edge go deluxe for everything else to properly reset the edge. I started with a lansky, used belts, water stones, oil stones, ken onion sharpener and what i mentioned above seems to work the best for me. I'd love the pro system or one of the others but for how much my WE go gets used I couldnt justify the cost for personal use. Diamond and ceramic bench stones plus a strop for a quick touch up once you get the hang of it is so much faster in my opinion.

What’s up Red, good video. Was awesome to see the Siren make a cameo in there! I enjoyed seeing the before and after stropping bit too. One thing that would be cool to test is the difference between stropping and micro beveling. I’m a huge fan of using microbevels. I feel like it always gives me the maximum level of sharpness with the least amount of work and the least steel removal. I also believe that it provides a longer lasting edge than stropping but I’ve never rigorously tested that. What would be interesting to me is to take two equally sharp knives that tested at very similar levels (say 200) and then strop one and VERY lightly micro bevel the other, maybe with a 1200 or 2000 stone. I personally believe the microbevel would be more agressive and last longer but it would be interesting to compare the final sharpness between the two techniques. Anyway, just my ramblings. Thanks for the video!

Don’t use WE because it’s not only harder to use than most systems, the big elephant in the room is their use of their own stones, and not the more standardized 6” stones. TSPROF K03 or Kadet Pro can reach much better results with more stone options, and ability to run more clamp types, and better built quality with use of 7075-T6. I got a Kadet Pro for $368 new on Black Friday, came with 5 Diamond stones. It’s much easier to setup, adjust angles, and has stone thickness compensator which allow you to quickly change stones from different makers. There’s no going back for me, I’ve already reached higher results on the Bess with the same para 3 rex45.

Ive been using wicked edge for about 4 years now and nothing has came out that beats it my opinion the mirror finish you can get with those lapping films are excellent better then any others system ive seen and i have lapping films and also strops and you can get kangaroo leather with diamond. 10 micron spray to make it just stupid sharp good review the stones work better as they break in and yeah its not cheap but its quality sharpener that will lasts for years

Do we always want the edge to be in the middle of the blade? If not, when or which blades does not?

I'd say for all the knives I've made I've wanted the edge to be centered in the blade. It think there are some chisel ground blades out there that this would not be the case.

When you say stropping down what exactly do you mean? If you’re sharpening at 17 degrees, are you stropping at 16 or 18 degrees?
@RedBeardOps
@RedBeardOps Жыл бұрын
I go down a 1/2 degree... not a pro, but that's been working for me. So if I'm at 18 degrees I'll bring it down to 17.5 to strop. This is because the leather "smushes" a little bit and you don't want to round over the edge you just worked on.

I dont know if this comment is too obvious as for anyone watching this video , but you said nothing about any finishing compounds that are used on your 2 other comparison systems. There are many diamond compounds available to strop with that would be much more effective in than the wicked edge system. Diamond compounds in paste form, water and oil based,spray, and emulsions. and others. Besides the multitude of diamond sizes. There are CBN compounds that act differently. There are ceramic compounds. There are green chromium oxides, there are aluminum oxide, and much more. All of these can be e utilized with or without the wicked edge system, at a extremely fast pace. And might i add a way lower price structure than any thing similar to what wicked edge had to offer. Not an opinion.fact. all of the degree of final sharpness was related directly to the finishing steps that you used.
