My 3 Staples: Benchmade Bugout aluminum/M390: a premium and lightweight EDC, definitely one of my favorites of all time. Cold Steel AD-15: it's a big and strong knife with a thick piece of S35 plus it's a really cool and unique design! Chris Reeve PJ Large Sebenza 31: the grail knife I bought for myself once I started my EMS career!

My daily EDC consists of 3 knives. A modern folder, a smaller traditional folder and a Victorinox Rambler on my keys. However, If I could only keep three folding knives, I’d go PM3, Hogue K320 auto and a Victorinox Farmer X with saw and scissors. See you guys at Blade!

I am reluctant to spend much money on knives, but the ones that I have have served me well for a long time. I do enjoy watching your program and seeing all the new innovations and knives. The three knives that I carry are as follows. I have used a case sodbuster as my basic pocket knife for decades. I finally had to replace my old one with a newer one due to the blade getting thin. Many years ago I bought a Gerber Applegate combat folder. When I need more it is my go to knife. And my third is a SOG multi tool. It has also served me very well. For hunting I have an old Buck 116 that will do just about everything I need. A friend recently gave me a Mora Companion, and I’m learning how to use it. Those are my knives.

My 3 picks in this scenario are (in no particular order) my Victorinox classic SD, Spyderco Para 3 (all black) and my Buck 119. My Mini Griptilian could swap for the Para3 works well. Pretty much handle most tasks with that combo. Thanks DCA, Thomas and Seth for the great content! Great work guys.

I did some traveling recently and my WE Banter was actually too big for the local laws, as they required 6cm or less. I definitely considered the Baby Banter, but decided to go with a QSP Mini Penguin. I did have to do a few mods to get it to what I wanted, but after carrying it around for 3 weeks on my holiday, I fell in utilitarian love with it. I think the straight edge is what made it so functional and it has actually changed what I am looking for in new knives I hope to buy. However I still really want a baby banter and am going to buy it for my wife! At least that's the pretence I'm using to make the purchase 😂

Hey my brother. Great content for FAQ127! I would love to see a segment on Slipjoint knives. Maybe about them in general, why they are a great EDC, and maybe cover the difference between what makes them different between the classic traditional and modern traditional. Also, covering topics explaining the “walk and talk” what the number scores are about. I just got into them at the end of last year and realized how amazing these things are made, and how useful they are in day to day life. Hope you consider my comment for one of your next topics. Have a great.Memorial Day weekend!!

DCA and Thomas, I'm looking for an edc knife, that also has a flathead screwdriver. but i don't need a full featured multitool or SAK. Just a regular EDC folder knife, that on that rare occasion when you need a good flat surface for misc scraping, or twisting of a screw. Think of tasks like finding a loose screw on a lightswitch faceplate, and you just want to give it a light turn but not ruin your blade in the process.

1, my work EDC - Leatherman Wave Black. I am a brewer and you would be amazed how often I use it daily. 2, my non-work EDC - Spyderco Manix 2 G10, fine edge - I am a lefty and I really appreciate a decent folding knife with a grippy handle that I can wear on my left side. It is also local to me as I live in Colorado. 3, Vintage Silver Capped Staghorn Sgian Dubh - Although I live in Colorado I am an immigrant from Dundee in Scotland. So when I am going to a black/white tie event I will be kilted and this is in my hose (sock). It is from the early 1900's and is a thing of beauty. 4 Bonus, Victorinox Camper - I have had this SAC for over two decades and it is awesome. If I am travelling which I often do, I can carry this in most places without fear of breaking local laws. If I am wearing a suit (as I used to do when I was a banker), no one bats an eye if I pull this out. I would say that it is the most classless knife that you can have - an old farmer is just as likely to have it in his Carhartts as a city slicker is in his Saville Row suit. I have lots of other odds and ends but these are the ones that tend to see the most use.

3 Folding Knives for life from my collection... TRM Atom, QSP Penguin, and my Shirogorov F3. The Penguin is my beater for sure. The Atom is very versatile with the scale swap. The Shiro is tough and fun. If I can add 2 more to the 5 collection it'd be my Spyderco Lil Native and Demko AD 20.5 Titanium. That way I have the little knife and a very robust folder. And they're both fidgety. Top fixed blade I'd keep is my Nordsmith Knives Lapwing 👍 then my Lionsteel M4 in CPM-M4 For the Multitool it has to be my SOG Power Access Assist. Best multitool I've ever used.

1. Bigger folder for heavier work, camping, etc. I Picked the Cold Steel AD-10 because it's a big, tough knife with a 4 inch, S35VN blade which I cannot break using hand and arm strength alone. There are other knives like it, but three things made me pick the AD-10: (1) The contoured handle has NO HOT SPOTS on it at all so I can use this knife extensively without any irritation to my hands. (2) There are large finger guards on both ends of the handle so there is no way this knife can slip out of my hands. (3) Plus it's not too heavy (6.9 oz) as opposed to a real monster like the Cold Steel 5-Max (12.4 oz) nor is it's appearance overtly threatening like, for instance, the Cold Steel Recon 1. (Yes, I have to deal with that reality.) An unexpected bonus was that the AD-10's blade sharpness out of the box exceeded ALL of my other knives. Wow! 2. A "gentleman's" knife. For me the -- ahem -- "Lady's" Knife would be the Viper Novis, hands down. When this knife is open there is NOTHING sharp on it except the cutting edge of the stone washed, M390, Wharncliffe blade. Even the top edge of blade is round so I can put my thumb as far out on it as needed to exert pressure and control the cut. Furthermore the complete lack of a pocket clip means this knife must reside in a pocket (or a purse when wearing women's clothing devoid of usable pockets), and the scales are SO comfortably contoured. There are a number of non-intimidating features of this "Lady's" knife, "not scary" being an important feature where I live. The blade is just 3 inches long and is not "pokey". The earthy feel and organic appearance of light brown Micarta scales is FAR less intimidating than a pointy, black knife with a black blade. The leverage on the front flipper is insufficient for me to open the knife with one hand, so I must open it with two hands; the slow opening of the blade controlled by two hands is also far less intimidating. (Even David C. Andersen of KnifeCenter.com had a hard time opening this knife, so I am in good company there.) Etc. A "true lady" does not advertise the fact that she's carrying a knife by having a pocket clip hanging out of her pocket; personal experience tells me that pocket clips ARE NOTICED and lead to some annoying "questions". The features above also work for real men (as oppossed to "adult boys" who need to show off how terribly tough they are). 3. A "compliance" knife. That's easy: Spyderco "Squeak". 2 inch blade, non-locking (but with a strong, two position detent), legal to carry just about everywhere you can carry any knife at all, and they come in pink too. :-)

4:39 Hi DC! Well, seeing you asked, here are my thoughts. For the last 2 or 3 decades I have owned and used three items (for the most part), while having several other knives. I've also made knives for quite a number of years. I made a large outdoors knife called a Bushwhacker, taking the design from a knife I saw in a knife book (before Internet!). I still have it! Added to that I have a Leatherman Wave I bought in Pittsburgh on a business trip, and my trusty Victorinox Swiss Champ I've also had for decades. However, since rekindling my interest if the field, I have refined my taste somewhat and studied what is available more carefully. I have now boiled down my thoughts to the following: 1. Cold Steel Trail Master San Mai III (I own one, which replaces my old Bushwhacker). This is at the heavy end of the spectrum (like your ESEE Junglas) 2. CS SRK San Mai III - this is, in my opinion, the centrepiece and the belt knife of choice. If I was traveling light, this would replace the TM. 3. Victorinox Ranger Grip 79 - this would be my around-camp knife for smaller tasks, especially if I was not packing the SRK. This is the knife Felix Immler features in his famous book. 4. Victorinox Swiss Champ! This is my all time favourite and will be there always. 5. Now we have this gap ion the middle. Up until recently I have been very conflicted about how to fill it. I thought of dozens of knives for this gap but couldn't find finality. Then last week Victorinox launched their new Venture series of bushcraft knives, and now I am excited that I might have found what I've been searching for! I've tried very hard to identify criticisms about this knife, then I go back to Felix's video about it, read the info, and find the criticism melting away. The sheer amount of thought that has gone into the design, how they have integrated the various (and new) features inspires confidence. Yes, it is a little odd, and I'm sure some may not like it, but I do. I now believe that this is the knife that will fill that gap for me. I would seriously like to own one of those knives! If I add a Silky saw (Gomboy or Bigboy) and a drill brace and bits to that selection, I'd be well set up for outdoor living, and even around the home as well. How do you like my selection?

My mid size is the Schrade shc54 5" by 1/4" thick 1095 blade. I made handle slabs out of some dense hard oak I have and I stripped the blade coating and blued it. Question for DA Hi there David, I can never decide whether whether the FAQ or the new knives of the week is my favourite series, I look forward to them both each week. My question is what is the best folding knife for travelling. I only want the knife for use with food so I can buy fresh produce or for example dried meats on the go and slice it, peel it, cut it and so on and eat wherever I am. A key factor for this knife is being able to clean it fairly easily especially in the mechanism and handle because it will be used repeatedly for this purpose on trips so daily hygiene is essential. I will be travelling mostly in Europe and the USA. This is not a kitchen prep requirement but an eat by the side of the road kind of requirement. I already travel with Victorinox knives but I am looking for a dedicated one blade solution for food on the go.

My 3 knife collection is: Benchmade Presidio I - I’d love a II but can’t justify it Victorinox Camper because obvious CRKT slip joint for compliance Expanding to 7: Kailash Blades Fort William Mk1 khukuri 13” - will eat all of the chopping you have, sir, and still allow fine work up near the hilt TBS Grizzly for bushcraft business Condor Bush Slicer for camp cool work Some kind of kiridashi neck knife for really fine work - maybe Kensei Kiridashi or CIVIVI Knives C2001B Kiri-EDC?

Thanks as always, Mr. Andersen and Thomas! I'm deeply disturbed by how many of my favorite, most well-used knives I've had to exclude in the accursed name of compromise. I'm fairly certain that having to select just 3-7 knives is a form of torture under the Geneva Convention. Notwithstanding this assault on my human rights, here's my list: EDC/Polite Society: 1) Victorinox Swiss Army Ranger 2) Kizer Gemini + #4 or #7 discreetly within reach. Home/Indoors #1 + 3) Ruike Hornet 4) Cold Steel XL Drop Point Voyager +#6 or #7 on body Outdoors: #1 and #4 + 5) Mora Kansbol 6) Cold Steel Tanto Machete SHTF: 7) Steel Will Argonaut 810

3 folder collection: 1)Cold Steel G10 Espada XL in AUS10A steel - because a portable folding short sword is a great backup for actual big fixed blades. Tough locking Tri-ad back lock and easy to maintain with solid edge retention stainless steel. 2) Spyderco Paramilitary 2 with Maxamet steel - for all my finer edc cutting and slicing tasks, and VERY long lasting edge holding capacity. Sharpening a super steel isn't an issue with diamond sharpeners and regular honing-edge maintenance. Patina on certain steels, looks nice imo, so I'm not worried about constantly keeping the blade pristine looking. 3) Cold Steel tanto AD10 with S35VN steel - a very comfortable hand filling, stout and robust hard use edc, that's great with it's two points for utility cuts and smaller edge for impromptu scraping or wood shaving (handyman) tasks. S35VN is a great all-around performance steel (like slightly lower grade AUS10A) and the hollow grind main edge keeps decently slicy, despite the robust blade geometry.

7 blade collection: The additions of 4 fixed blades: 4) Cold Steel's 2nd gen straight back Warcraft tanto XL with San Mai steel - Basically an almost short sword, capable of some (comfortable handle) utility, but a first and foremost stout/robust and long reach combat blade, that's more portable than actual short to full length swords. 5) Work Tuff Gear's Nomad Field Knife with K340 steel - basically a utility hatchet in blade form. It will handle all survival, camp, utility, hunting and food prep tasks in a mid sized form, with very comfortable handles. K340 steel has replaced my prized 1095 steel outdoor/survival blades. Excellent toughness and edge retention for outdoor use. 6) Overland edc fixed blade in Magnacut steel by TJ Schwarz - A fine tall but lean profile carry edc, with a blade design more adept at food prep and meat processing with an environment resistant and excellent edge retention steel. The Overland is great for smaller more detailed utility tasks. 7) Ontario Blackbird with S35VN steel - it's a beefy all-around Kephart inspired design, when you want robust and capable without the heavy weight and length of other heftier options.

Hey DCA and team. My wife likes to carry a very small knife in her brassiere as many of her clothing choices do not have pockets. her current EDC is a Ki-v but we are looking for other options. Must be quite small, stainless, and have a clip preferably deep carry. Also, the shape should not be too outlandish as it is stored delicate area. Thanks for your advice and keep up the good work.

Hi DCA, Thomas and Seth. Speaking of restricting german knife laws, I would appreciate you covering a special take on folding knifes you would recommend for edc-carry in Germany, excluding Victorinox SAK/multitool-type knifes. As already pointed out, there is this (debatable) "Paragraph 42a", that allows either a non-locking one-hand opening folding knife or a locking knife with two-handed operation (but keep in mind, that locking knifes that could be operated with one hand, even though not having thumbstuds or thumbholes, will get u also in trouble). What would be your picks especially for the budget and mid-price range up to a 100,- $ and why (talking ergonomics, safety, ease of carrying etc.)? Thanks!

I have waaay too many knives and love basically all of them. That being said... if we are speaking of 3 knife collections I believe that everyone should have... I think everyone should have a multi-tool, a folder, and a fixed blade. For budget/entry options... this could be Mora, a Opinel, and a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. (As everyone has different laws I won't give specific examples... but choices are available for most anyone at well within budget territory under $100 for all 3 with some room to manipulate where you put your money.) That being said I currently choose to not carry a fixed blade although I own several (reasons mostly due to restrictions where I work)... but for years have EDC'd a Victorinox, a small under 3 inch folder, and more robust under 4 inch folder. I have many SAK's... but my current carry of choice is a Custom built Titanium scaled Victorinox Yeoman. It has basically all the functionality of a Victorinox Explorer only in compact form and can function sort of as my compliance knife. (Non-locking under 3 inches.) My favorite small knife has to be a Baby Banter. It's cute and doesn't offend anyone but still allows for a four finger grip... it's also fidgety and fun. My larger robust knife has to be a Spyderco Shaman. It's has melt-into-your-hand ergonomic handle, a robust blade, and a fingersafe compression lock. It also has multiple deployments thanks to the spydiehole and generous jimping. (Spydie-drop, Spydie-flick, thumb flick, thumb roll, and Reverse flick.)

I like your breakdown for three knife choice. For the fancy/dressy knife that's inoffensive, I'd go the Cold Steel Lucky slipjoint. Carbon fiber and CPM S35VN, and a pocket clip. Super lightweight so perfect for dress pants (or track pants haha). For general use that does a lot of stuff, I'd go the Manly Wasp in CPM S90V. Beefier than the Lucky but not overbuilt, great grind and performance steel with a nice deep carry clip. Honestly could be my one and done knife. No idea what I'd choose for a third, I don't have a beefy overbuilt knife and I don't tend to use EDC fixed blades. Maybe something sturdy yet slim like a Code Steel Code 4? Something to think about.

My top 3 would be one strong fixed blade, an edc style folder and a self defence knife. Id probably choose a Fällkniven S1 or F1 as my fixed blade, a spyderco PM2 as edc and maybe a crkt minimalist as self defence. I guess the self defence knife can be swapped for a gentlemans knife like the crkt ceo depending on your needs. Also a leatherman wave is nice to have.

Hey Knife Center crew! Thanks for the regular FAQs over the years! I love the blade shape of the CS Talwar. My understanding of the blade shape is it's a Persian or trailing point blade shape. Is there a few knives under $250 you'd recommend with a similar blade shape to the Talwar? Few preferences: not a liner lock and not less then 2.5" blade length. I tend to own 4" ish blades if that helps
