Hello from Azerbaijan 🇦🇿. I've been using Leatherman tools for over 14 years. It all started with a gift from my father in 2009, a Leatherman Skeletool. This year, I decided to buy something from Victorinox, and after much consideration, I chose the Farmer X. Just like the one in the author's video. An excellent tool with impeccable quality. It has everything you need in nature. I can separately note the scissors, which cut instantly without hitches. Victorinox engineers rightfully earn their salary :-)

The skeletool is still my most reached for multitool, as it's so small and portable, while having an actual functional pliers and knife. The bottle opener is also very easy to use, even after a few beers

Any video that ends with the carcass splitter on the table is a good video. Makes me think of the old adage - a large knife can do everything a small knife can, but a small knife can't do everything a large blade can. Leaves me with a smile for the rest of the day. Sharp blades all.

10:52 utility/tactical discussion: my top knives need some variety in length: one is not enogh. IMHO three choices would be by length classes - 3", 3.5", and 4". While none of my choices will have the sliceyness of a 3.5" Rat 1, they will each have thicker hence sturdier blades (which also gives the locking mechanism a wider lockup surface). A 3" option may be the only legal option in our hometown, or for traveling. The Cold Steel 3" Verdict is new, uses the strong Tri Ad lock yet only weighs 2.5 ounces, and is only a few dollars over the $50 limit (on a budget, the $35 Grik is a practical EDC despite its fantasy novel series design inspiration). For 3.5", simply can't beat the Pro Lite series ($43-$54 with tanto, clip, and spear blade choices). It benefits from its utilitarian, minimalist "working man" look but it it won't close on fingers the way liner locks seem go do. It eas just reintroduced by Cold Steel. 4" is harder to choose. Luzon is way under budget while Voyager is about $80. I prefer the Voyager due go the Tri Ad lock although Cold Steel reassures they strength test the budget Luzon for safety. Either handle well and the Luxon is surprisingly light. I guess the main point I'd like to make is that I also love my Rat 1, but it leans too much towards the camping, carton busting, handyman, and food prep side of things, while Cold Steel grind and thickness sacrifice a little kitchen friendliness in exchange for a more durable "SHTF" build.

Another one for FAQ. My EDC for the last 30 years has been a Swiss Army Knife. I have various 91mm models and switch them up occasionally. I have been looking for something bigger and bush craftier for outdoor adventures. Maybe something in the Rangergrip series. My question is, does the Swiss clip work on these knives, or is there another pocket clip you would recommend for a Rangergrip?

To DCA, Seth, Thomas and all the Knifecenter crew… 2 questions: 1: If you were a moose, or other large North American ungulate, what would be your ideal EDC blade? 2: How would you recommend I convince Spyderco to stop making exclusive and sprint runs…? the knife bug has me real good and FOMO is a cruel mistress. I started with a single Kershaw in mid 2020, and not I’m somewhere near 200 knives… 37 of which are Spyderco. 😅
@chrisjohnson9542
@chrisjohnson9542 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately you will never convince Spyderco to stop making exclusives and sprint runs because they are highly profitable and collectable. By creating hype and limited numbers it artificially creates that FOMO and therefore people drop everything to be on the computer the second they drop and will spend whatever it takes to get it, many just so they can double their profits by turning around and selling it on the aftermarket to all the people who did miss out and now will pay anything to secure one. I'm all for a free market, but I do think that there's an issue with driving up that hype by creating this artificial exclusivity. But then again, is that not also the companies right that has established a name for themselves by creating a really good product? I love Spyderco. They are my favorite folder company for sure. I do think they have the right to do what the want with their products. Unless they were personally holding some knives for themselves to sell on the aftermarket after the price goes up I don't think that would be very cool or ethical. But I do t think they are doing that in any way. I do wish that they would make bigger batches of exclusives though. Like instead of 500 why not make a few thousand? They will still sell fast but would give more people an opportunity to get in on it for the initial price. Anyways just some thoughts. Your question kinda gave me an opportunity to think through some things. God bless.

Hi DCA, thanks for so many good points regarding the different knives available. I knever knew somebody could handle so many questions! I've been searching for a best option for a very specific situation. My brothers and I are often blessed to be able to purchase a bison to feed our families. When at the (winter [in North Dakota]) slaughter, we usually have several knives to fill the role of skinning and splitting the hide and some of the carcass (for bones we use a sawzall). What knife would you recommend that is long (over 5" perhaps longer), holds an edge very well against TOUGH hide (best edge), is pokey/pointy enough for piercing work, and is not painful to purchase (sub $250), lastly, easily cleaned is appreciated. My brother's recent choice has been a KaBar. Thanks! Orin

Why is it so popular (and pricy) when it doesn't seem to be all that special in terms of standout qualities? Why don't we see more in steels like 420 that are super stainless, super tough, and just as easy to sharpen?

I’m trying to a replacement knife for one my dad lost in a fire. The problem is that I can’t find anything like it. It was a fixed blade, about 10-12” overall with a 6-8” blade that was straight near the hilt but bowed outward towards the tip. The most similar blade shapes I can find is a bolo machete or some leaf blade if it was cut in half so it had a straight spine. I thought it was the perfect camping knife because it was great at chopping near the end like a hatchet, but had a long cutting surface for more knifey things.

For my “best of” suggestions: Mora Companion HD. A couple bucks more, thicker blade, love it. Gave mine to my daughter (knife nerd in training). My fixed: Condor Bushlore. If I was buying today, I’d consider the aqua lore. EDC: QSP Hawk. I need to check out the carcass splitter. I’ve been trading for the zombie apocalypse by working with government employees. (Medically, they’re indistinguishable.) for a smaller blade, I just got my daughter a small honey badger (1024). Perfect for smaller hands. Pretty close to perfect. For discrete but public use, satin finish blades and blue handles. That spyderco salt green is great as it looks kitchen-y. The gray one…love the design but gray looks too tactical to me for discreet/low-key public use. I like the SRK-c design, too, but would love a blaze orange handle and satin blade finish. I don’t go for high priced blades. I’ve borrowed several benchmades. They all have loose blades. Can’t justify that kind of money with sloppy blade locking. I’m not a big fan of SAKs. But, they can be a bacon saver. Camper and Forester have the combo I like. (I skip the scissors.) blade or two, saw, awl, bottle & can openers…I’m good with that in my work backpack. A good leatherman for the rest. Charge? Wave? Can’t decide there. Good stuff, DCA. Thanks for all you do for us knife nerds.

That's not to put down CRK, I love mine too. I do prefer my F3 to my Sebenza however. I am aware of the benefits of washers, most of the knives I daily are quality washer knives

Hi DCA, I'm looking for a small EDC fixed blade that can do double duty as a pairing knife. I'm assuming something with a full flat grind, about 3 to 4 inches blade length. Do you have any suggestions in sub $50, sub $100 and no limit categories?

Hi DCA and Thomas. Unfortunately, due to a recent break in, I have lost my entire knife collection. I have only been left with my Kershaw Leek, the knife I had on me at the time. I am now in the predicament of having to restart my collection, which I have chosen to see as a positive rather than a negative. However, I need your advice. I want to buy a folding knife with crossbar lock and a Spyderco style hole rather than a thumb stud. Unfortunately due to the area I live in in the world I am not able to purchase a Benchmade Griptillian. Can you please recommend a budget, mid range and premium knife in this configuration. Thanks very much.

The hi vis green may be actually discrete as the color is not associated with tactical knives and is similar to other low cost folders and cheap food prep knives are often sold paired with a cutting board.

Sebenza is swaheli for razor. I bought one for $10 from a kid that didn't know what he had. I knew it was a fancy knife due to the fact that it was a sturdy as a fixed blade yet its a folder. Impressive.

I have a spiderco salt series as a dive knife with the nitrogen steel. It just does not rust. I rinse it off but never bothered oiling it. Every other ‘stainless’ dive knife I’ve had starts showing signs of rust after 40 minutes submersion.

Great show as always. With the series Alone being back on TV, what knife would you take as part of your ten item list? Either a fixed blade or a multi tool (looking to see what you would choose)

Hey DCA, thank you for the great content. I have the ZT0095BW (discontinued) and then the ZT0308. The 0308 recieves a lot more 'love' and coverage on youtube than 0095 ever did. Aesthetically the 0095 looks better, it's nice and slicey, generally just a good knife. Don't you feel that, the amount of coverage knives get on youtube is 95% of what makes a knife successfull or not? Would the Benchmade bugout and the Civivi Elementum have been such big deal if it was'nt for the youtube hype? Not say they are bad. I'm just wondering, how many great knives fall through the cracks because they never really get youtube love?

Mr. Anderson, I already have many knives for specific purposes but am looking for an EDC fixed blade. I like everything about the White River M1 and FC 3.5 except for the price. Is there a more budget friendly version that you could recommend? I was leaning towards the Kizer Cabox or Esee Isula 2. It will be used for every day tasks but not needed for anything extreme as those bases are covered by other tools. I don’t want low end metal but i am also aware that my lifestyle and knife usage does not require the top premium metal either. What would you recommend? Thank you for your continuing education, you have taught me a ton and I appreciate it.

Both of those are good options. You could also check out the QSP Workaholic (bit.ly/462hYbA) or the Becker BK11 (bit.ly/3CmYvV4) -DCA

Hello knife center gentlemen, it's getting hot and my wife and I enjoy drinking fresh coconuts and we usually don't want to waste the meat. What fixed blade around the 4" length would you recommend to help open up coconuts? Also if there is a folder that's strong enough to handle opening coconuts up.

Hi DCA, I noticed that even premium brands for kitchen knifes hardly ever use one of the so called premium steels. Why is that the case? Price? Ratio of sharpening time and cutting time? Something else?

Hard to argue with the answer that Mora is always the right answer. I actually carried a Mora on a long distance hike, but most people will carry a only really small Swiss army knife, a small multi tool or no knife at all.

Although the sebenza is a fine choice it does not beat the all round performance of the viper dan 2 in silver twill carbon fiber on bang for buck. It is a hard use slipjoint with an extended tang for extra security and is beautiful.

Hey DCA, I'm looking to get a budget folding knife for EDC and light camping (no bush crafting) and don't have much experience. I've been looking at the Camillus 18673, it has a VG10 tanto blade and G10 handle. My only hesitation is I haven't heard a lot about the Camillus knives It runs for about 50-60 bucks. Do you think this is a good deal? My budget for this is around 80 bucks. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hey DCA, after hearing your opinion on kitchen set building, I find myself leaning towards the Due Cigni brand. Although I would love to step up to the Arne Line, my question is do I "really" need to? Because that line is 2x to 3x the price of the Pro 1896 Line. I would prefer to keep the set matched. For context, I've stepped away from D2 and favor 14c28n as my entry level steel for my pocket knives. I also fine myself going Hmmm... as I look at my Cruwear and s35vn Para 3s, button lock Elementums in 20cv and 14c28n and original elementum in s35vn and D2.

I've got so many Mora's. I find them stashed all over the place in my apartment. I couldn't tell you how many I have, but if I had to guess it's over 30. You literally can't go wrong with them. Throw two or three of them in your pack and it's still lighter than some full size fixed blades.
