DCA, I loved the mental exercise too! I started by loving the choices he began with! I'm jazzed you got engrossed and that it's a commonality between you, him & I. Knives are, like many hobbies, more fun with others. Because of this, this video was extra fun to watch and I thank you & others for making and posting it. I have fun watching Knife Center videos, especially the new knives on Thursday after the DBK channel video. Gratitude for Thomas chiming in and that when he does, there's subtitles on what he just said because it's important too and welcome to hear from him on top of what you say. Really glad for this amount of fun in my knife life. Good job!!!!!

Your comment about knife enthusiasts not buying good kitchen knives was interesting. I have liked knives as long as I can remember but I did not start collecting high quality knives until a few years ago. What got me started was when we got tired of lesser quality kitchen knives and purchased a good set. I realized that I had never owned a “good” pocket knife. I started at the lower end of good and in less than three years my collection has grown to over 100 knives including some higher end knives. Thanks for the interesting videos. Keep them coming.

Very much agree on the kitchen tool question; Most kitchens have enough room for the basic dedicated tools and they'll work 1000 times better. A camp kitchen would be a little different, of course. I travel a lot as a catering chef, so I do bring a multitool with me on jobs, but that's also a rather unique situation :)

@@MJCarrilloCastro OMHO but both SP27 and S30V are easy-moderate to sharpen (depending how bad the blade is to begin with). Both can be done on stones although I find diamond easier. We actually use a SAK in our normal kitchen. We don't use a lot of cans that need a can opener, so the Wenger one is good enough to use twice a year and we also don't drink a lot of wine, so the corkscrew is good enough for a few bottles here and there. My wife also uses the bottle opener for beers. Also: when a screw on one of the pan handles is loose, the victorinox is not as good as a dedicated screwdriver, but a lot faster as it sits already in the drawer.

Wow. I didn’t think I’d be so elated to have my question featured on one of there videos, but I was grinning ear to ear as soon as I saw the thumbnail. DCA, you came through and then some with your recs. I was eyeing the opniel as the only real option, but, like you, I wasn’t thrilled about the serrated edge. I would have never came across the SOGs by myself tho. And as to you final “final” answer, it’s funny that I considered multi tools as a different section of my gear entirely. I had thought of getting a huntsman AND a leatherman signal in blue as my primary and backup multi tools. Overkill? Maybe, but I hike with a 30 gallon hiking pack that mostly carries water, so I got plenty of storage space. Finally, I think I finally realized why your videos are so awesome to watch. When you answer a question, it feels like you’re talking personally to whoever asked it. Your personable, down-to-earth, and jolly nature is what sets you apart as a content creator. Keep up the great work, and thank you, sir!
@realbroggo
@realbroggo Жыл бұрын
Carlos can I recommend you take a few minutes to stop and really think about what your realistic needs are and this will help you get the most satisfaction. Too much gear just weighs you down - nothing to do with space. Think about where you're going. The environment? Are you on or off trail? Water/humidity an issue? How much wood processing? etc.... You may not need to carry all of the knives you're looking at. My combo is always 1 x fixed + 1 x folder + 1 x multi-tool matched up to suit the hike/camp I'm doing. Have a great day.

@@realbroggo Yep that’s absolutely fair. I am definitely still figuring out the makeup of my kit, and what is realistic versus what is superfluous. However, my thinking is this: I would prefer to be over prepared than under prepared. So I try to make my judgement based on practicality when I’m on the trail, instead of theoretically when I’m at home. Chances are though, once I figure out how much I actually use, I’m not gonna carry everything I listed above, plus, as I add other pieces of kit, I will constantly reconsider which ones take priority. But, I want to own all of the things I said above, and choose what to take based on what I have needed in the past. I appreciate you! It’s always good to receive feedback.

Then I'm kind of settled on the Böker Urban Trapper, also for the hostal kitchens with blunt knives. If I may offer a suggestion for more a budget-friendly, tactical mufffin top-affirming, scout-carry fixed blade, I'd lean toward the Kizer Baby. the new Civivi Cubit is light robust since it has an alluminium handle and 14c28n is stainless so I think it's really suitable to carry if you wear shorts. In my opinion for a daily carry fixed blade it would preferable to avoid 1095 or carbon steel in general and go with a good stainless.

I love these videos? DCA gets more screen time on my tv than anyone from Hollywood ! Just wanted to add a couple things-too bad the Leatherman Juice CS4 is no longer in production, it would add serious “juice” to Carlos’ blue hiking kit. That model only came in blue if I remember correctly-mine is, I’ve had it in my pocket so long it is no longer under warranty! Also, I’ve seriously wondered about the lack of super steel kitchen knives. I am a very hard user and mostly stay away from the latest, greatest steels, my edc is a Buck 110 and you will not ever convince me there is anything better (yes, I’ve owned a few $200+ knives). I like a blade that I can completely wreck during the day and fix while watching just one Knife FAQ! That said, I would love to have a Magnacut or 20CV kitchen knife! I think the kitchen is the perfect place forget about chipping and making edge retention king. Seems almost exactly opposite to me-put VG 10 on EDC knives and M4 in the kitchen! Also DCA, could you do a Knife FAQ that focuses more on the right knife steels for the job rather than whatever is in vogue? 420HC, 12c27, 14c28n, etc, are still really hard to beat in hard use, readily maintained steels. Also, why does the knife community have such low regard for 420HC? It is almost the same thing as 12c27… It is one of the best hard use stainless steels going. These are simply the best outdoor steels going, edge retention isn’t always king, keeping an edge serviceable is. However, I think the opposite would be true in the kitchen. Could you possibly do an episode that focuses 100% on the merits of the steel for the intended for job without regard for price or whether or not it is considered a premium steel-explore the subject a bit more in depth?

Hey, DCA (and team), hope you’re keeping well. I’ve been shaving with a straight razor for about 8 years because I enjoy both feeling smug about sustainability *and* self-mutilation. Almost all the straight razors I can find are carbon steel - why is this? Are high end stainless steels and/or particle steels not suitable for a straight razor? Very much enjoying the channel.
@seancollins3711
@seancollins3711 Жыл бұрын
That would be because carbon steels are tougher and will hold an edge longer (most of the time) than some modern stainless steels for a fraction of the price. Because of the nature of most razor blades out there today, which are "disposable", there is no real need to spend time resharpening them when you can buy a pack of them and have new ones ready to go, companies can mass produce these blades for very little money. Razors need to be very thin and very sharp and shaving beard hair is actually quite hard on a blade so thin and sharp, you would have to sharpen a stainless blade more often than a carbon steel blade. To summarize, carbon steel blades will hold up the the abuse better for cheaper. Like with anything in the blade world, you can usually find what you want with a bit of searching and if you really want a stainless razor, I say go for it but it would be in your best interest to learn how to sharpen them as well because you don't want to toss a high quality stainless steel in the trash.

Hello everyone! I know you are the Knife Center and all that, but do you have recommendations for (urban focused) edc pouches that're touching on the larger side, so they would be good for putting them into a backpack? (Clarification: I'm not looking for those tiny ones that are made for pockets and belts, but also not those huge ones that could be annoying to place on the table and would be too unhandy because of their size. I also wouldn't mind a molle system on it, for my TOPS FDX 66, or velcro loops for velcro hook patches. The more sub-pockets inside the better, so it stays organized after a tumble!)

All you guys are great, Congratulations on the channel growth, guess it's not really a question, but I'd just like to see more discussion vids if possible

@high end kitchen knives. Cannot talk for others. But I was looking at the "Miyabi Black 5000MCD67", but ultimately decided that in that price range, I can get a fully custom knife, designed by me... and that is what I did. I would not be surprised if that is a route many knife enthusiasts do, as these are probably the most accessible custom knives.

Late to the party but I would go for the Bradford Guardian 3 over the Tops or Esee for edc Scout carry.

DCA, looking for a recommendation: I have the Sencut Citius and I love how it has such a narrow profile without being too narrow like the CEO. Looking for something similar with better steel under 300. I am currently looking at the ZT 0707, any others I might be missing that I should consider. Bonus points for a milled pocket clip but not essential.

Question David...I have an old Case Sodbuster with a carbon blade, it was always very easy to sharpen and held the edge very well. One day, I was cutting up a bunch of apples and didn't clean the blade as I normally do, the next morning the blade had a very dark patina. After that, I was never able to get the knife to take an edge. So the question is...can a blade get such a patina that it burns the temper out of the blade? And, if so, what if anything, can be done to fix it?

If you catch a sale you can easily get a SOG terminus XR for under $150. I was even able to get the LTE carbon fiber version for around $100. I completely forget I have it with shorts.

DCA, I am a scout leader and have two Eagles graduating from high school. It's that time of year! One is heading to AZ the other to GA. I want to keep them active in the outdoors and present them with a knife that they can carry while camping and hiking in those states, but keep them out of trouble with the college authorities. I was thinking an SAK or multi-tool, but wanted to tap into your experience and opinion. Under $80 would be great. What are your thoughts? NAM

As someone who uses, abuses and/or looses about a knife a year at least...before its wore out, broke or lost. Its hard for me to spend.....well more than $50 now, use to be more than $30........ But im finding it hard to find a good knife for under $50 these day! I NEED, easy to sharpen, hold a decent edge with out chipping not matter what i do with it. I dont mind having to touch up my blade everyday after a hard days use, as long as it dont take forever to get a edge back. Im liking D2 with a good heat treat as its super easy to get a working edge and it holds it well. But also dont mind 440 or 420 if its done right. Bit heck a Buck 110 is $75 plus now......

I am opposed to high end kitchen knives unless you are the ONLY ONE WHO USES THEM. Shortly after I got married, I bought a set of Cutco kitchen knives, which my new bride promptly put in the dishwasher. They've been in storage, and she's had Chicago Cutlery ever since...I do have a nice Santoku, but after I caught my daughter batoning it thru a frozen orange juice can, it only comes out when I'm cooking.

There are soft-loop (scout loop) cross-carry options that would work great with those taco sheaths - and would be easier on the tactical muffin than bulky tek-loks 😉

Hey DCA, do you know of a higher end marlin spike knife? I love the usefulness of this blade patern, but it seems that only low-end materials are used to make them? I would prefer a serrated blade, but plan edge is ok... as long as it is a true sheepsfoot.

Hey DCA, I am looking for a 3 in. and under edc fixed blade. Appendix or scout carry preferred, possibly pocket carry. Stainless-steel is a must. Also, I would like a full, four fingered grip and be able to do light food prep while eating. P.S.- High Thomas!

As a woman I don't ofter wear clothes with substantial pockets or with a belt, but I really enjoy classical knives like the opinels or case slipjoints. Are there any aftermarket solutions that I could use to carry them clipped to my waistband?

I use a Tec Accessories suspension clip for pocket-carrying Swiss Army Knives. That might work for some of your knives, if they have a place to mount a split ring.

Hey there DCA, Im looking for a replacement for my old and trusty SOG Flash II. I work in landscaping, and I need something a bit hardier and resistant to dust and dirt. I'd prefer a 3-4 inch, half serrated folder, easy one hand opening, and like mentioned above resistant to muk. Under $150 if possible. Thanks in advance and for the educational videos.

Hey DCA, I'm in the UK and have to abide by tight guidelines, could you recommend any modern slipjoints? They have to be under 3 inch and obviously non locking. Would be nice to see something that's not an opinel no 6, not that there is anything wrong with the opinel no 6. Great to have you back by the way felt lost without knifecenter FAQ. ❤

Question for next time: I was always interested in the Gerber LHR but sadly it's no longer available. I was wondering if there is a similar knife, especially one with the safety lock on the sheath that the LHR had.

DCA & Thomas, I'm a chef and motorcycle enthusiast. When I travel sometimes staying in Airbnb or cabins I'm always lacking tools to prep meals for me and friends, I worry that if I bring any of my Wusthof knifes is going to end up out of the sheath and will pierce my clothes or even worse cutting me if I put my hand in there. So the question is, Do you guys have a Folding Chef Knife 6" to 8" that I can just put in my saddlebag or small luggage, in any price range? I know I could probably tuck it really nice in there, but I need an excuse to buy more knifes 😜 I really appreciate any help, and BTW Love the Channel 🤘
