Im personally not a big fan of the FRN scales on the Lightweight models.I mean,they are nice and grippy,lighter weight and are everything you really need and are everything they should be but I’m just personally not a big fan of the cheap plastic feel of FRN,GFN,Grivory,etc type scales..in other words,my problem with the Lightweight models has absolutely nothing to do with functionality,it’s just my preference for G-10,Micarta or Carbon Fiber..with that being said,I agree,the Para 3 is EDC perfection..in fact,the Para 2 and Para 3 are my 2 favorite folders for a user knife..the designs are about as close to perfect as it gets.they are very comfortable in multiple different grips behind the choil and are every bit as comfortable when you choke up on the blade using the choil and thumb ramp..I also love the wide blade with the full flat grind that makes for one hell of a slicer..IMO there isn’t a better more functional folder on the market..there are nicer,fancier and higher end knives but when it comes to a knife I really want to carry and put to use,nothing beats the PM2/PM3

After hearing House Truck Pig's question regarding hand to hand combat with Grizzly Bears, I have a somewhat similar situation. I live on a house boat, and would like to know what you would suggest as the best possible folder, (preferably under 4 inches, less than 4 ounces, and waterproof) for fending off Killer Whales? They're pesky critters, and they simply won't leave me alone. I usually use a 10 inch fixed blade when dealing with larger prey such as Blue Whales and Sperm Whales, but would like something smaller that fits in the pocket and is easy to deploy for those times when using a large fixed blade would just be overkill. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

I would recommend the Spyderco Autonomy 2,it is super sturdy with a beautiful 3.5” blade..it’s a bit heavier than what you are looking for coming in at 5.6 oz but it has the super tough,extra corrosion resistant LC200N blade and an absolutely amazing tool for slaying sea life of any kind..it doesn’t matter if it’s a dolphin,shark,manatee,marlin or a Killer Whale,90% of the time,it works every time..the beautiful thing about the Autonomy 2 is it doesn’t matter where hit any of these creatures,just a nick of the tail fin,dorsal fin,gill,etc it is instant death...in fact,I don’t think you even have to make contact with any of these creatures,if they come within 10’ of a human wielding an Autonomy 2 it strike such a level of fear into their hearts,they immediately go into cardiac arrest and within 5 seconds their corpse floats to the surface

FFG to convex: just get a stack of silicon carbide paper in various grits, sit it on top of a piece of thick leather (or a stack of newspaper will work ok for extra cheap) and start like you're stropping it at a very low angle. It's not fast, but it works perfectly and costs very little.

Mr Andersen, looking at maybe getting a edc fixed blade. 3.5 - 4.5 inches. With a handle large enough to get a full grip. So that disqualifies a bunch or neck knives. I have to cut a lot of thick card board(corner boards specifically) , for packaging appliances for shipping. So a decent knife steel is a must. What do you you suggest for 125 or less? Box cutters just dont cut it.
@garrettferrell6821
@garrettferrell6821 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of your hands but the Bradford Guardian 3 or 3.5 is IMO EDC perfection..I can get a full grip on either but I don’t have the biggest of hands either..for $125 or less you could get a new one in N690 and could probably find a used one in a better steel for that price..N690 is a lot like VG10..if you don’t mind 1095 carbon steel the ESEE Izula/Izula 2 is also a great EDC fixed blade..the S35VN ESEE 3 or S35VN ESEE Xancudo are also good considerations and can both be found for in that price range

Would appreciate your opinion. Keep up the great work !

The "incredibly low weight" of the Bugout is something most people don't even seem to care about. They achieved that weight by making the scales feel like they'll bend on you. That's something thats bothered a lot of people so much, they've actually gone out of the way to replace the scales entirely. Adding to the cost of the knife overall, and the weight. If you want a Bugout alternative, and you don't have large grab hands. Try the Giant Mouse Iona. You don't get an axis lock, but you get M390 steel and a choice of handle material. For about the same price as a Bugout...

Hi David :) I have been carrying slip joints for 60 years and have recently gotten into a few modern style budget knives. I recently purchased a Ruger LCK reverse tanto ( made by CRKT) that I really like. I thought I understood blade shapes on slip joints but reverse tanto, sheepsfoot and wharncliffe seem to be almost interchangeable on modern knives depending on the manufacturer. Can you recommend a better budget reverse tanto or similar style than the one I have? Thank you. I really enjoy your videos and knife knowledge. :)

Hi DCA, I've finally completed my kitchen knife set from shun classic (got them piece by piece took a couple of years) but the only thing I'm missing is a cleaver. Shun knives are great, super hard steel and can take a real acute edge great for slicing, but they can get a bit chippy and their cleaver seems to be the same way. Can you suggest a true chopping cleaver that is not too wide and has the same styling as shun classic so it does not be out of place with my current set. Thanks for the amazing content.

Hey David, two part question. I have a work sharp sharpener, the handheld field sharpener. And I cannot achieve hair popping sharp when I sharpen with it. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, I get my knives sharp but not hair popping sharp. How can I improve my sharpening skills? I prefer a method without machines because I would like to develop the skill of sharpening. Also how do you determine the angle of the edge of any given knife? I have a Chaves knife that was gifted to me but I’ve never sharpened it because I’m scared to. That knife came wicked Sharp and don’t want to mess up the knife in way. pretty sure my Chaves does not have a 20° angle on it that my worksharp recommends. Thank you

@garrettferrell6821 3 жыл бұрын
I believe you just need more practice,the work sharp field sharpener is a pretty good sharpener..I don’t blame you for not wanting to try your luck with the Chavez,I would use cheap knives that you dont really care about to hone your skill..the more you practice,the better you will get..I would recommend getting the new work sharp precision sharpener,it kind of hard to find in stock at the moment but it’s starting to get a little easier to find.this sharpener is like a KME style guided sharpening system but unlike the KME and other similar guided sharpening systems,it can be bought for just $50..I would use this sharpening system for the Chavez and other higher end knives you don’t want to take any chances on screwing up the edge on and I would continue honing my skills on the field sharpener with cheaper knives...I would also recommend getting a leather strop and some stropping compound.stropping can help bring your edge up to the next level.if you strop you knives often you can keep a good sharp edge without having to take a stone to it...I know the field sharpener has the built in strop which is better than nothing but it leaves a lot to be desired.its quite impressive what one can achieve with a good strop and stropping compound

Speaking as a chef who uses miyabi everyday , they are def more of a delicate beautiful flower of a knife , look into yaxell , enso hd and dragon and also the nexus series of knives for more durable affordable band usable blades in terms of kitchen knives , not that miyabi is bad but they are def more of use with care brand I love them to death but they're more artwork than tool

I like the 4max and am interested in something close to it as a fixed blade. The context is that the 4max is the actually proportionate for me. Apparently that’s a thing for me. I need heavy knives, I guess. 😁

I recommend the new Work Sharp precision sharpener,it is a guided system and is made like the KME sharpening system except it’s only $50 instead of $200 like the KME..It’s been selling out fast so I would keep an eye out and check these online knife shops often.I got mine from DLT Trading

But the Hogue Deka doesn't weigh under 2.5 ounces. It weighs over 2.6 ounces. It was a brilliant marketing move by Hogue to claim it weighs 2.3 ounces when it doesn't, so that people would mistakenly compare it to the Bugout.

Someone also asked for a bear fighting knife at my local knife shop here in Colorado, they got all the same answers everyone should get. A) there are none B) 44 mag./maybe and C) whatever knife gives you the most seconds before you are eventually mauled. I think the record is 12.

Contact the good people @AG Russell in Springdale! Have them get you a Randall, there’s NONE better! While waiting, buy you a Buck112 with upgraded steel! They’re budget friendly, but I’ve disassembled our smallish AR Whitetails with one, as well as dressed squirrels and small catfish with it, and zero complaints! It’s a “two hand opener & closer” for me @75, but for the money, deal with it😉👍❗️

If you’re on a tight budget,I would recommend trying out the CRKT Mossback Bird and Trout knife..it’s in SK5 carbon steel (basically a Japanese equivalent of 1084) with G-10 scales and sales for only $20..the cheap nylon sheath leaves a lot to be desired but it’s well worth $20 without the sheath

Any recommendations for a back pocket fixed blade. (Under $75) Deep carry sheath to clip on the pocket. No preference in leather or kydex. I think the crkt minimalist knives are about the perfect but ir seems like all the knives around that size only have neck sheaths

The seven CR on crkt's Minimalist knives really sucks. I had a Bowie I ended up throwing it out of my car window on the way home. After a simple day of cutting tape and packaging the thing was so dull it literally could not break skin.
