Love this question! Of these four, the freak is the only I’d be inclined towards. Some of the features I’d be looking at would be ideally a washer pivot, flipper, micarta handles for wet grip, Drop point, closer to 4” than 3”. And I just can’t go with a funky blade shape traditional look is important. Nothing assisted. Keeping it simple, manual and snag free! Though not hitting all the boxes, I like the Taiga as mentioned. I also love the QSP Hawk. The solid locking mechanism is superb. So for budget, the RAT has to get an honorable mention, of course, but CJRB Scoria, civivi praxis, buck vantage avid. Got larger budgets, Maserin Rimini Nimrod checks a lot of boxes. Benchmade bug out or Presidio 2. Cold steel demko.

My dad was a hiker for most of his life, and he kind of liked the knifes, but wasn't a knife collector or knew anything about all these brands, types and models of knifes. Of course his prime time was before the internet era and all it brought to the hobby. Anyway, he carried exactly 2 knifes on him. First was a chunky fixed blade bowie knife which he used for cutting branches, throwing it in trees, cutting twine, poking stuff out, etc.. And the other was an old school buck slip joint folder which he used to prep food and forage mushrooms. Times and people were simpler 30-40 years ago...

The Freek is a GREAT choice, but the SOG Kiku XR has really surprised me and is my new favorite in this category. 1. It's probably the most ergonomic knife I own, especially in reverse grip, which is incredibly comfy and has great protection with the flipper. 2. In addition to the sweet XR lock action, it has a flipper and can be spidey flicked. 3. The blade is stout with a recurved section and a section with a nice belly. 4. The XHP is a little easier to sharpen and more corrosion resistant. 5. The LTE version (which is a bit over the $200 limit) is only 3.65 oz. We'll see how durable it is. Lovin' it so far.

I think my pick would have to be the Kizer Vanguard Gemini, at the more budget-end price point. Maybe not exactly 3 inches, so some states might have an issue with it, but if you aren't in a state or county that does, it's a fantastic knife. Great drop point design by Ray Laconico, fantastic edge geometry, good grinds, micarta scales, and N690 steel, one of the two best non-particle steels (the other being 154CM in my opinion), all for only 75 bucks. Chinese manufactured, sure, but so are the Civivis, and I think Kizer's designs are all great, but this one stands out to me as their best for a do-all folder.

I carry a fullsize griptilian most days (mine wears deathgripscales) but it's a fantastic "do all" kind of carry knife. Awesome knife. If you are looking for a little bit smaller do all edc, a spyderco native 5 in any flavor is hard to beat. Smaller overall footprint, spyderco's best lock, and ergonomics that allow the native to "behave" like a much larger knife than it really is. It's good at everything. At the other end of the spectrum, when I hear $40, I think only of the civivi praxis. I don't think a better knife for your money exists right now. It's just so good. Mine plays the roll of around the house, out in the yard, whatever knife. It's easily my most used knife and I find myself happy every time I carry it because it has no business being as good as it is for $42. If you own it and use it, you say to yourself "I don't really need anything else" but of course we buy more knives.

I recommend the assisted opening Bear Ops A-300-AIBK-S in 3.625 length blade in 14C28N. American Made to boot and 14C28N is tougher than most of the CPM steels except 3V and 4V. The assisted opening is about as close to an auto as you can get. Bear and Son makes it and they have other tactical knives, but this is under $50, but I'm not sure Knife Center sells the 3 5/8ths length. Blade HQ is where I acquired mine and they list the blade as .090, but it is .140 and the grind goes to .090 about 3/4 of the way down, so I don't know who measured that .090. My Bear Ops measures HRC 60 hard as my 59.3 hard scratcher doesn't scratch it, but my 60.8 does, barely.

For a folder, CRKT M21-04G. Flipper makes it fast into action. Dual locking mechanisms keep it tight and safe, even for do-or-die applications, blade design allows for pretty much anything from thrusting attacks to simple every day cutting chores. Comfortable, well designed, decent materials that work but don't break the bank. I have a lot of knives but this one is the only folder I've ever liked so much I replaced it when I lost the first one. I've talked several of my friends into getting one. A good Cold Steel choice for this would be the Air Lite, or the American Lawman would be a good fit as well. I bring that up because you mentioned Cold Steel at the end. Thin and easy to carry in the pocket, strong Triad lock, 3.5" blades, no bearings to gunk up, decent enough edge geometry. Not a super slicer by any means, but still cuts very well, yet is sturdy enough to hold up to outdoor use. Both are also good for self defense. Hey I was watching a review you did earlier on pocket knives and you showed a thin leather sheath with a metal belt clip. Could you post a link for that. Tia

So how about the perfect version the Freak and Grip and cost less. Doug Ritter RSK MK1G2 full size 20CV and the G10 on it is so good. Just won't find it at Knife Center.

The two I had in mind were the Cold Steel Bush Ranger and the SuperFreek.

Love the videos, but can we see a video on Tomahawks?? What are they used for? What is a combat, breaching, or chopping? What is bearded and spiked? Can you go over this one day? Love ya!

Funny enaugh, I own those two Benchmade (Griptillian & Super Freek) and they are 1 foot away from me just this moment! :)

this is like a ballyhooed Grudge Match where the initial fight was, in retrospect, nothing more than a tiff.

Hi guys, I’m looking for a hard core chopper to help me gather firewood for home heating. Machete style with a front heavy design and a grind that doesn’t get stuck. It needs to be very tough and not more than $150-$175. Can you help? My balance isn’t as good as it used to be, so I don’t want to climb around felled trees to cut off all the smaller limbs with my chain saw. I did buy a Coldsteel Kukri for this task, but it doesn’t work nearly as well as I had hoped. I need something with a bit more thump. Thanks!

An Axe. You need an axe.

Why combine EDC with outdoor !? I fish outdoor! Every folder will be filled with slime, blood etc. Fixed blade + non-slippery handle is a MUST! My choice: ParaMili-2 as EDC + some simple fix with right handle (like SOG xxx Pup or even Mora)

Hey DCA & SV, I love to personalize and customize things. What would be your picks for top customizable knives in the budget to premium level knives?
