For the guy asking about D2 rusting: I live in the Dallas metroplex, where the air can get pretty humid. I carry an Izula in 1095, and the edge will take a patina within seconds of use, but it never goes and further than that, and not even the entire edge patinas. I have a buddy who carries a D2 flipper that I sharpened as a favor, and I noted little spots of surface rust. It’s only a problem if you’re vain enough to have totally patina-free blade profile, but a little steel wool polishing should keep it shiny.
@sheltermonkey60653 жыл бұрын
You say the air can get pretty humid where you live, but you live in an air-conditioned house, right? Your car has AC, right? And you probably work in an air-conditioned office. There's a reason almost zero percent of knives from 100 years ago are still around: They got rusty so people discarded them.
@Deibodese3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. 🤔 Modern conveniences would definitely make it much easier to preserve knives that are more prone to rusting. I hadn’t considered that before.
@Alexander2103 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you do and where you live. I live in San Antonio, Texas (hi, neighbor) and I work outside. It can be a bit humid where I live at times, but nothing like Houston's humidity. I've used D2 from different manufacturers and all of them rust. The reason being is because they're in my pocket and wear jeans type material. It gets damp w sweat, humidity, etc. I love D2 in my field because I can abuse it and not worry about it chipping. S35vn works really well, too. Anyway, if you use EDCI solution on your D2 blades, they help stop the rust. I have had tremendous success w it and kept rust to a very bare minimum. Of course YMMV. Hope this helps!

I carry a RAT Model 1 in D2. It's in my jeans pocket every day for years. Am north of Texas on the arid Great Plains. My workplace isn't air-conditioned. I've not seen any rust or patina on the blade. I haven't yet figured out how to sharpen the thing. It quickly goes from scary sharp to almost sharp . And then stays fairly sharp for a long time.

Hi David, My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question: I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features: 1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard") 2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong) 3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it... 4) About 3" or more Blade Length 5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly. 6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip 7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each. Thanks so much!

Since I understand I'll probably never see or handle them, I'm very happy to be able to see them in operation, in any capacity. DCA, I bye no means am an expert on knife steels. I can say that if you have knives, an I have a good two hundred. Keep them for the most part in my den I "including some old gas station knives" have never had a rust problem. The highest steel I currently have is S35vn, so the long way around is simply store your knives in the proper place. I grab a few almost every night an will strap them while watching our shows with my wife.an I live within a half mile of the Indian River in Titusville Florida. Also work for the most part outdoors!

Love D2 but treatment does make a difference. Only time I've had it rust is when I put a knife away wet/dirty after camping. Even then it was surface rust that cleaned up with only moderate effort (had to disassemble to clean) and no edge damage. I agree with DCA - steel has some relevance but just buy what you like and leave the steel snobs to fight each other over which is best. Perfection never comes so buy whatever makes you happy - these great vids will help you make a good choice!!

Building bushcraft shelters, tent stakes, bushcraft furniture, whittling, carving walking staffs, processing firewood (breaking the branches down & batoning) and various bushcraft projects. I stay outside in the humid but mild summers & subzero temps winters. None need sharpening. They need periodic cleaning & stopping but no need for 'sharpening'. All a variety of budget steels & still sharp AF. All the premium steel sales pitches are a money grab. Keeping up with the Jones.

Hey DCA - love your work. My job has me deployed to disasters throughout the US and Territories 11 months out of the year. So - constraints are I almost always fly and I could end up anywhere. For choppers / small machetes I always go for something fast, hard hitting, and which can rock a snap cut - which I find exceptionally effective and satisfying. I am currently using a Tops Armageddon (fantastic blade) but interested in trying something else which could go in my kit but perform like the Armageddon, which also baton like a beast. Must be able to maintain and not break the blade while on travel status. Currently I am in the Pacific Northwest for a while, but might have to jump up to Alaska to deal with some landslides. I have an affinity for compound grinds and don’t need anything with a full flat grind. Preferred steel is 1095 and with a full multi position long handle that’s grippy enough to not use a lanyard. Able to fit in a 5.11 Rush 72 pack is a plus.

We all come from different backgrounds, obviously, and I may believe that last question wasn’t a joke. Although my background involved combat handgunning, close quarters combat, and trench warfare, my experience with “high end” knives was VASTLY limited until I actually got into the knife game. My questions, back in the days, would’ve been the same, since Marines pretty much carried Cold Steel, KaBar, and of course everything Gerber sent us. So I think the question eluded more to of what DCA might consider a solid, hardcore, combat war fighting knife. Right now I am VERY satisfied with the Protech SBR Fixed Blade and for folding knives, I’m really enjoying the Adamas in Cruwear.

Hi there, I own several bushcrafting fixed blades (Mora's and other Scandi grind knives) but am looking for an EDC fixed blade with slightly different characteristics. I would like a thiner slicing blade, capable of skinning/gutting and daily food prep, but also strong enough to do other daily tasks. I won't be abusing it like a work knife on a building site, and would carry a small keychain pry bar as well. I like wooden handles and leather sheaths, but am happy to go aftermarket for the sheath. I am thinking a little bit of an updated version of that wicked sharp carbon steel knife your grandmother might have had in the kitchen, but in a smaller, tougher package. In an ideal scenario I would carry it either on my belt or inside the waistband. I have larger than average hands. Blade length doesn't need to be that long. Open to different blade steels. I actually quite liked the L.T. Wright Camp MUK, but am open to lots of options.

I have considered a delica in k390 or getting a native 5 in maxamet that looks to have better ergos. Do you have any other suggestions with comfortable ergos, somewhat lightweight, has good edge retension and toughness, and under 200?

I would recommend classic Sage 5. Subjectively, it is much nicer and better over all. My old Sage 1 is every day in my pocket... Love that little knife :)

@@Tommy-lc3kh You are welcome... It is not heavy at all, capable for harder use also. And very comfortable in hand, in pocket... I tried lot of knives but my Sage 1 (discontinued) is really my number 1. Sage 5, except the locking mechanism is pretty much the same knife... Stay safe :)

Hi David, I own a fixed blade Milwaukee brand duct knife which of course is used for cutting foam or soft ducts for HVAC installations. However I found this to be a good all around knife, almost suitable for bushcraft. I would like your opinion on this knife if you ever had a chance to use one. Thanks

Thanks for all advice DCA, I have purchased several knives under your recommendations. Do you have a knife sharp enough to shave with and if so would you consider rocking a sweet 'stache like Seth?

Would you have picked the PM2 of those dips at Spyderco would actually manufacture them? Or anything for Spyderco not made of plastic.

Question: are Byrd knives worth getting to “test” Spyderco EDC? I know that they’re a budget subsidiary, but I wasn’t sure if the general fit and finish was similar enough to test the Spidey-flick, and I’m trying to curb my bias against Spyderco’s aesthetics without spending too much on something I don’t know if I’ll like. General box opening and cardboard cutting for EDC use, plus plastic straps and seatbelt straps. Thanks for all the info, love the series

Generally harder to do the Spidey flick with a lockback knife. They Byrd knives are good and I will continue to recommend them, but they are maybe a half-step lower in quality than the inexpensive China-made Spyderco branded knives. -DCA

I have recently been getting back into traditional knives. I was hoping you could show some brands other than Case and GEC. I'm just wondering what else is out there in the traditional world. Thanks for the info.

If you like Swiss Army-style knives, Mercury from Italy makes some beautiful ones that are only about $20. I'm really impressed with them.

Great show as always, and this time I have a question! Any recommendations when it comes to a folding tanto style blade? They don't seem very popular, at least when I was looking for some options, and I would love so have your insight on the subject. Price range I'm looking for is around $100, lower or slightly higher is fine. Thank you for your time.

As far as which folder and fixed blade I would want in the Gladiator ring; I've gotta go with the Cold Steel Espada, and the sharpest, most expensive Katana in the catalog.

It looks like the Spyderco knife can be possibly locked from a kid with a master #10 lock. I have a few of these floating around on my cabinets. Can you see if you can put a padlock on one of these.

Question: One of my friends showed me his pocket knife and the blade on it wasnt anything i've seen before and cant find. He called the blade edge a H blade and its not like a serrated blade. How the H blade is used is just to cut straight down. No need to do any sawing motion at all. Hopefully you can help me out. Thank you for all your work.

Im looking for a flipper knife 3 inches or less. $50 to $75 but im not a big fan of D2 i have a hard time getting good edges in them and would like something without D2 untill im better at getting a edge. And can you also recommend some steels that hold a a good edge but fairly easy to sharpen

DCA friend, I love washers and I'm sick of bearings (I don't hate them but I thing they're overhyped) I am looking for washer based flippers right now I have the skyline and the cutjack and both are absolutely amazing, do you have any other suggestions? And while you're at it possibly what are some washer based knives with good action in general. One last point I'm really into sleeper knives or under appreciated knives so anything unusual is always cool.
