That is a great collection of Cub lockbacks, and mini canoes. I like Queen Cities Abalone, and this is the first time I have seen Black lip Mother of Pearl. Late teenage years had a couple of Mother of Pearl knives. Unfortunately after many years and moves they have been lost. I am going to have to check out Queen City and RR for the Abalone and that gorgeous Black Lip Mother of Pearl. Thank you for sharing them.

Nice handle materials. I wish Case would get busy and turn out some nice Black Pearl knives, or that Queen City would return to the USA. You would think they would in light of the overwhelming demand for GEC knives. There is plenty of market for good USA made knives. But. I understand their dilemma with the need to keep the patent active Thanks for good info, as usual

I bought a RR Cub in black bone with the ti coated blade. I really didn’t realise how small they were! I do like mop, much more than abalone. I’ll be looking out for the mini-canoe. It’s legal carry here, unlike the cub... that beast is officially a weapon of mass destruction!

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you'r enjoying the music. I believe that the Peanut is the third most collected slip joint among Traditional knife collectors. First is the standard trapper followed by the tiny toothpick. As much as I like the large toothpick, I can't for the life of me understand why a person would choose the tiny toothpick over a peanut. And if it wasn't for the fact that people buy so many commemorative trappers, I'm sure the Peanut would blow it out of the water. Someday, I'll have to pull out my Peanuts. I'd bet I have more peanuts than Mini Canoes or tiny toothpicks.

Frankly I think they are doing a very good job for a very reasonable price. The abalone is stunning, the black pearl is very luminescent. Great choices Tobias, my only wish is that they would offer some different patterns and at least one 7"-8" fixed blade per handle type to complete the set.
@GSHarmon

Canoes are one of my absolute favorite patterns, but I'm just not that hot on mini canoes. I really would like to get one of these pearled knives, but I may have to go with the cub. I picked up one of the RR red bone mini canoes, so they may grow on me.
@jdnotariano
@jdnotariano 2 жыл бұрын
I may pick up the regular canoe in Abalone. It seems the Rough Ryder is a better value in the black MOP. The quality matters more to me than country of origin. China has proved to be able to match US manufacturing quality imho at about half the price point. But I understand that the market still values the prestige and history of US manufacturing. By the way the knife industry won’t be the first to move most manufacturing overseas. Clothes, textiles, shoes, etc have long since moved even the old major US brands to overseas manufacturing.
@KnifeChatswithTobias

I recall back in 2009 going into the Boy Scout Store and talking to the staff about the new knives that were now coming from China. They were totally perplexed by all the grief they were getting. Noboby complained about the merit badges that had been made in Taiwan and were now being made in China. Nobody complained about the uniforms that were made in Vietnam! We won't even get into where the Silva Compass for the Boy Scouts were made. The salesperson wasn't sure if it was Sweden, the US, or Taiwan! Canteens, first aid kits, you name it -- very little in the store was made in the USA. And the only thing people were b*tch*ng about was the knife was no longer made in the USA!. LOL. Yet the ones from China, had mirror polished blades, genuine bone handles and really smooth actions. The American ones had plastic handles, satin blades, and stiff action. Both were priced the same. As an American, I hate to admit it, but the knives that were produced off-shore in China through the Scout Shop were just a better value all around.

I like the look of both materials; it would be interesting to know how it is made into covers and handles. Do these materials have any issues with durability compared to other materials like bone and wood? Can it be re-polished after being scratched? What is the best method for carrying and caring for these types of handle materials?

I bought both abalone canoes and a peanut. The mini canoe and peanut are fine. The larger one is a little disappointing. The abalone looks nice on both but the large one isn't finished as well. It has a rough edge that snags the finger. Haven't tried to polish it out yet.

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
SMKW attempted to do a few Queens made by Bear & Son and they went over like lead balloons. GEC is out of the question. That really just leaves the Blue Grass, owner of Winchester and Case. It's going to be tough to find a USA maker for Queen to turn to. The struggle is real. I think many of the owners of some of the great American TMs would love to get the production moved back to the USA but the business and manufacturing climate isn't financial feasible in todays volatile market place. As reps from SMKW pointed out, they needed to get a product out in order to retain the TM.

Seems to me they need to keep the brands separate, with different blades, nail nicks, covers and patterns. otherwise why have different brands? And different prices? Maybe have different designers, too. That black-lip MOP is really pretty. Thanks!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
It's surprising how many companies have multiple brands pumping out the same knife. I know the Queen City are running a few dollars more than Current Rough Ryders, however the price of the Mother of Pearl knives is just a $5 more than Rough Ryder MOPs from 10 years ago. In many ways, that's about the price of inflation. There are some very minor difference between the latest Rough Ryder Knives and these Queen City knives but not much. The thing is, there really is only a few cosmetic differences between many traditional pattern knives regardless of the company making it. For instance at first glance, Case, Rough Ryder, Bear & Son, and Frost all make a nearly identical Trapper. But I do tend to agree with you. I was somewhat surprised to the see the Cub Lockback migrate over to Queen City. That little fellow was unique to Rough Ryder. As much as like it abalone or MOP and it probably should've remained exclusive to Rough Ryder.

I like the black mother of pearl better than the mother of pearl. It has more depth to it. Does SMKW have any intentions to bring queen back to the states? Also are there any manufacturers in the USA other than Case and GEC that make traditional pocket knives? They are the only ones I ever hear about.
@andrewnawarycz3026

I'd love to have a GEC or case here in the UK the old knife capital of the world! But now have a couple of makers churning the same old dross tarted up with fancy covers and totally overpriced!!! At least you've the choice of different blade sizes and patterns. 👍
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
Bear & Son also makes traditional slip joints. The finish is not nearly as good as Case but if you a looking for a solid user, they are a good option. Schatt & Morgan and Winchester make linited USA knives still. There are also several other USA makers (Tuna Valley, comes to mind) but they are even more expensive than GEC.

They really are beautiful high quality knives. Like you, I love the Cub lockbacks, and have a number of them. Also like you, I'm VERY glad they didn't billboard the bolsters and didn't print on the blades. That can sometimes make a great knife look cheesy.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they have both Queen and Queen City. The Queens have been made in the USA but by Bear & Son. If you think these are disappointing... Supposedly they needed to get something out quickly to hold onto the TM. Hopefully they move to something with higher quality and keep both in the US.

By the way, what is the purpose of a “half stop”? Some of my knives have them, but I don’t know why. Is there a knife use for which you would want the blade at a 90-degree angle to the handle?

These are pretty knives. I'm not a fan of buying from Chinese communists but unfortunately a lot of these designs are no longer made by American companies. When they are produced they're often only made sporadically and in small numbers. You're more likely to be attacked by a mountain lion than find some of the GEC models new in the box.
