Queen City Abalone Mini Canoe

I recently picked up one of the new SMKW Queen City Mini-Canoes. The knife features in resin coated genuine abalone handles. I know many will be upset to see another famous American Knife brand being made in China. Will we see the name returned to the USA? Is this knife worth the $25 asking price?

The similarities are very apparent on both knives. The nail nick on the blade is identical on both knives. I won't spring for one of the new Queen City knives unless they come up with something really unique, and bigger. Thanks for showing it partner, this is the kind of information we knife collectors need.

Knife Detector , I bought partly because of the disappointment of that Case Butterbean and I really like abalone. That said, I’d also like to see Queen making “Queen Knives”.

A lovely knife, and if they’re made by the same folks making Rough Rider, they can’t be half bad considering that RR is kicking Case’s hinny in the fit and finish department of late.

Holy smokes that abalone pops on that queen city. I think the larger canoe will be on my wish list. I do like the canoe pattern as it doesn't scratch other things in my pocket due to the bolsters covering the blade joints so we'll. Thanks again Tobias for a great video.

Thank you. Those are really cool knives. I have an old queen cutlery knife from my grandfather. Here in South Africa it was made in America. I would love to buy a knife from Queen cutlery that is as cool as his was. Thanks for the review

Tobias, The Queen City mini canoe just came in the mail and no blade wobble and it is simple the best piece of Abalone I have ever seen. So I took it outside to see it in the sun light Wow to say it is great is just understating it.

Very nice looking knife. If it was a full sized Canoe I'd be all over it, but I'm not a big fan of smaller knives. Just a personal preference. I appreciate the video and review none the less..as I mentioned..it really is a nice looking knife. That abalone is outstanding!

Kitty did an excellent job with the production value. The history was very interesting. Especially since I grew up in Cincinnati and it is called the Queen City. You keep showing patterns I have never seen or heard of so it is really informative. Thanks for sharing that I liked the abalone a lot. Mother of Pearl is better but cost is up there on it. Great color capture Kitty.

Strange as it may sound a an independent knife maker is Cincinnati tried to launch a line of fixed blades and he was calling the knives Queen City knives. He had no idea another company in Titusville, PA already had the TM. He also didn't realize that Titusville and about 100 other cities in the US have the nick name "Queen City" To be honest, I also wasn't that aware of just how many cities had Queen City as a nickname. When I first heard of Queen knives I thought they were from Cincinnati!

Very smart, sandwiching the abalone between the acrylic. That way they can have a thick scale without muting the luster underneath the resin. Abalone is one of my favorite handle materials. Really regret missing out on the genuine abalone rough ryder trapper. Those bolsters really accented the elegance of the handle material. The pink pearl is pretty nice too.

The Queen City abalone has chatoyance, the imitation not so much, is one way to tell the difference. I picked up both QC abalone canoes and compared them to Case and GEC abalone and it compares quite favorably to the eye, imo. Nice picks Tobias, thanks.

It is genuine but there is a there is a thin resin coat. That’s common even with Case, as far as I know.

My wife went to the SMKW site after watching this video and ordered the full sized Abalone Canoe. It is a beautiful, well made knife, but we have one concern. We were surprised that we could feel the texture of the abalone and it seemed that the topcoat was a bit thin and in spots, almost like patches of the shell are exposed. She is concerned that, over time, pieces of the shell could flake off. Does this seem normal to you sir? I guess that we were expecting a smooth, flat surface like that of the Purple Kirinite on the Case Stockman I bought for her birthday. We aren't familiar with this material though and are wondering if it is supposed to be like this or if it is defective and should be returned.

Mine is also lumpy. I just picked up the little cub lock back and it is the same way. I think it is the way the coating was done. It is thin but that is why you can see the abalone as well as you can. I guess only time will tell how it holds up.

LinusKuzmick , I’m they at least keep Queennin the USA. I’d like to see Queen City there as well but if this is a way to keep the brands alive then compromises are sometimes necessary.
