Technology will take a huge chunk of the market, we agree or not. The future of the business will be automated. As we call Industrial Era in the recent past, our time will be called in the near future "the archaic driving type". Do not resist it, go with it. Just imagine how many refused working computers when processing data manually; nowadays, manual accounting, data intro, etc are gone. I deliver some places where I go to a tablet and look for my load; same in the destination, I input the info in a tablet. Also, many places with overnight stations that we pick up load Docs NO clerks or security intervention. Sad say it but that's what awaits 🤷🏻♂️

That's the problem I have noticed while driving for them. I don't know if the guy on the far right was a driver but I know the guy to his left was never a driver; he's not a bad guy, certainly had worse bosses than him, but the overall lack of experience on the road leads to some very poor decisions. Decisions like shortening the training deadline to 4 weeks while thinking that installing fancy radars and sensors will make up the difference. Nothing replaces proper training, or ever will and the driver themselves doesn't have a constant awareness of safety drilled into them before they hit the road on their own, you won't change anything. Then there's the issue of them overdoing it. I don't need half a football field of space in between the guy in front of me to be "safe" and it just makes it more difficult for me to pass someone going slow on a busy highway, and annoying to whoever is behind me when passing should be a quick speed up, get around him, merge back and done, but now I need to get over to pass so far back by the time I get in front of him there's a long line of cars behind me literally making me a hinderance. Then there's the being governed at 65, which I can understand in some scenarios, but our west especially on the plains i can easily do 75 and be perfectly safe in good weather and low winds.

The fact of the matter is the computers and tech literally can process more data faster than a human brain and thus are safer. All of this tech is the way of the world there is no denying or stoping it. Unfortunately, yes it will make many people's jobs obsolete. Not sure what people are going to do for jobs. After 7 years over the road as a truck driver, I am very thankful that I got out of the trucking industry. I feel very sorry for all the truck drivers left in the industry because everybody knows they are trying to replace truck drivers with self driving trucks because the entire economy is impacted for every truck driver that leaves the industry. Alot of truck drivers are quitting the trucking industry because of this b.s from mega carriers that want to pay truck drivers less money and not wanting to pay an experience truck driver for his driving experience. Everybody knows the safety speech is complete b.s and they look for any kind of accident to punish all the drivers the same even if you had never had an accident on your record. It really makes my head explode how they force experienced drivers that never been in an accident to do mandatory safety classes online and most of the questions are just the same old questions over and over. I am surprised nobody is talking about the forced driving stimulator Swift forces truck drivers to take and if you fail on that machine than you are placed on suspension. When did virtual reality become more important than actual reality? You better be good at playing video games because Swift honors virtual reality and technology more than an actual experienced driver that has never been in an accident, driving over 600 hours a day, 70 hours a week, never home with friends and family and constantly fighting to stay awake working morning and night shifts. I just can't wait until the entire trucking industry goes in flames when they the self driving trucks malfunction and cause so many traffic jams and accidents that people will actually BEG FOR TRUCK DRIVERS TO COME BACK AND PAY THEM WHATEVER THEY ASK FOR BUT MOST OF US GOT TIRED OF THE B.S AND REFUSE TO GO BACK!!!!

Ofcourse you don't want completely driverless trucks. I mean when the truck fucks up, they need someone to blame. And they can't force us to continue driving over the road. Who wants to sit for 10 hours when you are totally rested up and you feel great. Let me guess. Take your 10 hour break even if you cannot sleep and then get back behind the wheel after your 10 hour break and begin your day. That's ridiculous. There's more tired truck drivers out there today than ever before. I remember in 2003 I was driving through Ft Worth/Dallas and I wanted to get on the other side of the big city so when I woke up I would not be stuck in traffic because I'm going away from the Big city not towards it. I remember getting really tired twice in 6 years and both times I stopped at a rest area and took a nap and I felt great. Most people don't need 10 hours off. Every single day. I used to do it the way I wanted to and I never got into any accidents. I ran illegal every single day for 6 years and the company I worked for was good with it. One day I felt great and I ran 900 miles. The next day I ran 600 miles. I did what I wanted. I ran 2 logbooks. My HOT logbook I sealed it up in a Few Ex envelope and wrote Mom on it and the cops won't open that unless you are in a Big crash. I'm 100% sure that i will never drive long haul again. I run local and I work about 12 hours each day and we don't have to fill out a logbook because we are not going over 12 hours each day. Then go home and sleep in my own bed. It's way better. Cameras that see 300 yards in front of you won't help you a bit when your vehicle is 80,000 lbs and doing 60mph and you have to stop that forward motion. At 60 mph that truck is moving 88 ft. A second and you are already at the problem site before you can respond and start to slow that vehicle down Big trucks do not stop in short spaces and 4 wheelers always do stupid things that get people killed. I'm betting insuring these driverless trucks is going to double the cost of Insuring each tractor. It isn't a driverless vehicle if there has to be a driver with both hands on the wheel for it to work. Fuelling every aspect of trucker life. The office people have no idea what truckers go through so they need to know what happens in a truck on the road then when they are dispatchers or what ever their job is it would help then understand what goes on out there on the road. Thats the thing. They say they don't want to get rid of us, bit then why invest in self driving trucks. You don't buy a house you don't intend to rent or live in, yet they expect me to believe that they have zero intentions of ever replacing us? Will it happen overnight no. They will gradually add stuff, test it, make it better, then repeat until the trucks actually do drive themselves, all be it about as reliable as Tesla's "Autopilot" feature, and with each new improvement they'll let a few more people go. The bottom line is always minimizing costs and maximizing profits and when it comes to huge corporate entities, they've never been shy about being ruthless about it, and what is their biggest expense? Drivers. We may find ourselves out of work soon and unfortunately I don't think there's much we can do about it.

The VIN on your truck will identify if it ever was a glider in the first place. If you ever get contacted by the EPA, it will not go well for you. You will be required to spend probably more than 25 to 30k to bring the truck back to spec. Then there is the fine......and there have been cases where the offender did jail time.

Any regulations in the trucking industry that are not mandated by DOT or the FMCSA are optionally enforced by the trucking companies. These regulations can only be implemented by consent of the drivers. When drivers do not have authority to dispute regulations that negatively affect their job, self driving trucks will be the only option. Pets, rider policies, amenities, yelling of 'driver shortage' have all been used to lure drivers into trucking jobs but technology is now becoming competition against humanity.

But remember self driving tech doesn't have to be fully self driving, it could just lower the bar intelligence wise/competence wise to be a truck driver so they can pay new drivers $50k instead of $75k. This would probably involve lobbying to make getting your CDL easier etc...

Spoken like a true executive... That's not a compliment. The way he answered those questions was almost the same way as the replacement terminal manager at Katy (after former was killed in murder suicide) would talk to you when you needed or wanted something. That corporate talk where they read a book to answer a 1 page answer question. Tell you what you want to hear not exactly a lie but but not the direct truth. Like if Alex's wife asks him if he thinks she looks pretty in a particular outfit and he answers "you don't look ugly"... That's not what she asked but it's a better answer in her head than no you don't look pretty.... Ya'll know that scene in the 3rd shrek movie where they have Pinocchio hostage and bad guys asking him where shrek is and says he can't lie.... So he responds with this long as heck response... He technically wasn't lieing but he wasn't telling them what they wanted to hear.... Yeah that's corporate talk. They do it all the time. I think it's a class they take in college... Required for a business degree.

First of All…great dialogue and thanks for showing sharing this conversation…very BIG of you and speaks volumes of how your platform is valued! Here’s the bottom line folks…THINK!!!! Stop panicking and use your common sense!!! A Pilot will always fly a plane, a conductor will always be on a train, there will never be flying cars because drivers can barely drive on the roads as is and I’ll be damned if people can become amateur pilots of flying cars when they can’t even drive????? And last but not least, regardless of all this technology coming to trucking, Truckers (Professional Drivers) will always drive trucks and have jobs doing such, this is a way to weed thru the bad below average drivers(steering wheel holders) there is a difference to this and those who know know and understand !!! As Long As You Are An Asset, You Good, Period! Lastly think on this too…have any of us ever talked to anyTrain Conductors and Pilots about the challenges that automation technology advancements did to their industries…did they think they were gonna be replaced and or out of a job career??? Well I have and every one that I talked with about these things and questions all said the same things…they knew they were valuable to their employer trusted in themselves being an asset and embraced it and they key thing all of them said was that the technology made it better and less stressful and they were not replaced by the advancement of technology etc!!!! And to think that this is the exact same thing that one of these guys said…he would not fly if there was no Pilot flying the plane, right??? However we all know that Pilots use Auto Pilot for a decent amount of the flight! IJS…THINK!!! Respect!

I used to work in food processing automation in maintenance. Also worked for another factory. Actually 6 years in different factories involving automation. Automation has a lot of failures, crashes, adjustments, and bad reads. Products can be recalled or held back by a QA check. It hasn't improved enough for road use. These devices will kill someone at 70 mph with 40,000 lbs being directed if it decides in the program to drive towards instead of away from something. Entirely a dangerous idea.

I had hundreds of pages years ago of grant programs across the United States when I started my trucking company. I am a white male and 99% of the grants were alloted specifically for minorities, females, indigenous people and foreigners. Do some digging and you can find a plethora of opportunities.
