On a recent trip to Da Firma Training Center in Chesapeake, VA, I got to spend a little time with some good friends, including Judo and BJJ Black Belt, Kenton Givens. I asked him if he could show some details over a couple of my favorite foot sweeps in Judo, Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi & Hiza Garuma, as well as their usefulness for BJJ context particularly. I hope you like this and get some good details out of it.

Kenton is an awesome instructor and all-around great guy! He's also contributed a great deal to the freestyle-judo community. Love the "train track" analogy too👌

Glad you addressed the set up since I've had trouble getting people upright enough in BJJ to apply judo techniques

Even though I hit a foot sweep on a lighter white belt, I was stoked so fun.

Excellent breakdown. I love the train track analogy, that’ll really help to cement it in my mind.

I always wanted to see a foot sweep video because you don’t have to commit as much as shooting a takedown. Thanks so much 🙏🙃

Same. I was a big fan of shoots when I was younger but now that I'm in the master's division, I'm transitioning to foot sweeps

I remember when I was a white belt at age 28 I could shoot in for takedowns for days. Now that I'm a 39 year old brown belt I just usually go for inside leg trips or easy foot sweeps since shooting in gets me gassed out quickly now. 😂

Great tips and techniques here. The explanation really helped understand concept wise what to do and I like the off the train tracks cue. And that sequence to get grips and get them more postured for the sweep was super helpful.

That's funny that in mid air you thought "that's a pretty throw." I say this because I do it all the time. I'll be in mid air and I'll even say out loud "Nice" then boom I land. Great vid as always. Thank you

Haha, it is a funny thing to happen, but you gotta recognize when it was a great technique, even when you’re on the receiving end.

Very good man. I train bjj wrestling and judo. Judo is another piece of the puzzle for me . People who say judo is a waste of time are wrong. It's about making it work for you. Train to become a complete grappler. Osss 🤙🤼‍♂️🤙

Started my journey a little over a month ago, and one of my professors was showing me some old photos and said "this is eli knight maybe you have seen him on youtube." and i was like yes! so needless to say my professor has trained with you many years ago and he then took a break and recently received his black belt finally. His name is David G. Thank you for these awesome videos!

There’s something horrible about when you get grabbed by someone who does judo, or wrestles… they feel like a wall, and you kinda know you gotta try extra hard to not go flying…
