Walks With Olly

After my second night of camping at Panpwnton Farm, I would walk north from the campsite, immediately following the Offa's Dyke Path for a few miles. From there, my plan was to loop back through the village of Knucklas and exploring the site of Knucklas Castles, after crossing the River Teme.
This walk was supposed to be about 14 miles... And came out a little bit longer!

Good morning Olly, guess who 🤭 that's right us! This would be one heck if a route to walk in full, planning ahead being key, food and water stops etc 👍♥️ The campsite sounds a little frustrating, or should I say, you have been unlucky to have some inconsiderate bum-holes land, such a shame sorry Olly. Hope this improved 🤗 Nice little trig and cracking veiws, liked the blanket of cloud too. Trouser sock love always! 🥰👍 Lovely looking green space, nice and peaceful too, surprised you didn't see more people, go figure huh 🤔 loved the heart if Wales way marker badges too, do like clocking different routes. Lots of history and a very interesting walk, pleased your found out why the route was closed too. Thanks so much for sharing with us, have a great week, Ceri and Kat, we may well explore this area in the future ⛰♥️👍☕🏕

Good evening, Ceri and Kat! It's always good to hear from you and to see you tuning in so soon. Thank you. :-) It was my first camping trip for nine months and a very compact site. Perhaps not as bad as I perceived; I am quite sensitive and was one of the only people camping alone. Things were definitely quieter the next night, even with the same guests present. I hope you both get to explore parts of Shropshire - a stunning and often overlooked county - and Offa's Dyke Path, which I believe many would enjoy. Hope you have a good week. All the best and thanks for watching. :-)

Thanks for sharing this walk with us Olly, a good distance too. Shame about the campsite and the noise. Some people can be quite inconsiderate. Take care. xx

Hi Rachel, Thanks for watching. It's a chance we take when camping sometimes but I am a lighter sleeper and quite sensitive to any noise. It was a nice site otherwise. I dodged a VERY busy campsite last weekend, even though I'd paid in advance... Feedback from others suggests I made the right call. Hope you have a good week and thanks again.

Good to see the border county looking so green and lush Olly. Just what you need before heading off back home. Hey, love the challenge of deeply rural navigation - picking your way through I call it. Another good stretch. Mark

Hi Mark, It is a beautiful area indeed. Less wild than where I was on the previous day but that historic dyke and its earthworks still play their part. I was just surprised by how absent the waymarking was in so many places. My confidence was low going in to the weekend. But I see now that I could push on through with my assurance another time. Thanks for watching, for your comment and all the best.

@@WalksWithOlly Yeah, less wild but lush Olly. Good navigation training - all good for confidence if you get it right. A pleasure to watch.

Hi Richard, Things definitely improved over my final two evenings, even with the same people present. I think it's more likely these day with more people staying in the UK and not travelling abroad. It's a chance we take. I hadn't been camping for 9 months so maybe that also played its part. Glad to hear you loved Offa's Dyke. I dodged an unbearable campsite in Dorset last week, even though I paid in advance. Turned up and there were hundreds of people. Many apparently made noise through the night! My instincts were right to leave when I did. Hope you have a good week. I am following your Cambrian Way progress. Thanks for watching and all the best.

Thank you very much, Nigel! I was hoping to get up to Scotland last year, but for the pandemic. Still feel I need to visit the Lake District before then... But do have some more local wild camps in mind. I skipped another camping trip recently because the campsite was heaving when I arrived and apparently there was noise until 2am. I feel more inclined to wild camp after these experiences; it's often a question of having a full weekend to spare. Thanks for watching. Hope you're coping with this heat and all the best.

Had the 'lousy neighbours' many times on campsites Olly ..... bought an old van and fitted it out ..... inconspicuous and any noise issues we just move on ... perfect to avoid the marauding hordes.

I like your thinking. I've bought a van myself but for work purposes... Now you'll be known as "that man in the van" by neighbours in tents. 😉 Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks, Martin. I'm glad to finally know! :-) There was another in an orchard lower down. Did have a look on the Land Community website but didn't find the answer. How common are unsigned rights of way in and around Wales? Thanks for watching and have a good week.

Powys is very reluctant. With signage apparently that's why the heart of wales line trail took so long to be set up. Have good week to Martin

Yeah, that's how I felt about it. And even on those bridleways, the gates are in no way convenient for horses and bikes. It's quite a shame.

Olly, lovely relaxed walking away from your 'busy' campsite😊 We haven't had rain here for weeks☀️ and am looking forward to some next week🌧 Loved the trousers in socks look😊 Have those waterproof socks am must give them a try out. I would share your caution around farms and would probably walk around them if I could. Always great to be out and about😊

Hi Gerry and thank you. I have now bought myself a pair of waterproof socks but, like you, I've yet to use them. Looks like you had a good camp yourself the other evening - I intend to do more wild camping of my own soon - it looks more and more appealing!! ;-) I'm glad we did have a bit of rain over the weekend and that the temperature has dropped a little. Let's see what the rest of the week brings. Hope you have a good week and thanks for watching, as always. All the best.

I liked the look of that walk Olly. Looked very picturesque with some nice views too. Shame about the noisy campers. Hopefully they will all be back in Benidorm next year! Shame about the wet boots. Have you ever thought of trying trail shoes. They do usually dry fairly quickly this time of year. Sealskinz socks are decent, although they do feel a bit strange at first

Hi Anthony, It was a good walk overall. Had I felt a bit more confident in pursuing certain paths, I might've made better progress. I am looking at buying Altra Lone Peak shoes next month. What are you wearing now? I'm also expecting a delivery of waterproof socks very soon! I've gone for Bridgedale as reviews suggest they feel a bit less strange. Enjoyed watching your long-weekend multiday-er the other evening. Hope you're keeping well in this heat. Thanks again and all the best.

@@WalksWithOlly I’ve got the Lone Peak 5’s and the Altra Olympus 4’s. Both are great shoes. The Olympus have a better grip and more cushioning than the Lone Peaks. I’ve been really impressed with both. If you’re new to Altra and zero drop shoes, you’ll just need to consider the transition. Plenty of advice online regarding how to make the transition though
@WalksWithOlly
@WalksWithOlly 3 жыл бұрын
I had a look recently and noticed they do more than the Lone Peak range. Do you run in them? I have zero-drop, wide toebox Merrell shoes that I run in but the traction is poor. My other sticking point is that I need to wear safety shoes in work and cannot make the full time transition.
@AnthonyJohnson1
@AnthonyJohnson1 3 жыл бұрын
@@WalksWithOlly I only use mine for walking as I’m still transitioning. I wore them on the 55 mile trail I did recently and my feet were aching a lot by the end which probably means my feet aren’t yet strong enough. If you want grippy ones then I’d recommend the Olympus 4’s as they have a Vibram Megagrip sole which is excellent. The grip on the Lone Peaks is decent but not as sticky in the wet and mud.

Actually lot of these places are right of way In particular the one you run a cross there not allowed to lock the gates or they should put in a style. I suspect land owners are actually wrecking the signs And passing it off as vandalism
@WalksWithOlly
@WalksWithOlly 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewart, I was only really doubtful through my own lack of self confidence and therefore fearful of any potential confrontation. It is so wrong that landowners are "allowed" to get away with this. Yet it seems to be more prevalent in some parts of the UK than in others. Hope you have a great Christmas. Thanks for watching, for commenting and all the best.
