This is a great pattern, so versatile! I made the hat using three #4 yarns (held together as 1 yarn) + 10mm circular needles (knit flat) & cast on 37 stitches. Twice I used a #5 yarn + 8mm needles and cast on 43 stitches. Every time the hat came out fine. Thanks Joanne :)))

Nice! Thank you for sharing your accomplishments. It's very important for other people to know you can add or subtract stitches on this pattern.

I learned how to knit hats from you over five years ago and this is still my go to pattern and video any tine I have to make a hat. I do it on circular needles now with one less stitch and have changed the pattern a little for different circumstances and I absolutely love you for teaching me how to make hats.

I wanted to thank you, I am not only a beginner at knitting, but I'm recovering from a massive stroke (almost 4yrs ago) . I really appreciated your video tutorial and I made my First hat.....Going to give it to my husband for Christmas, and I'm on my way to # 2! Thank you!

Thank you!!!! I haven’t mastered knitting in the round on 16 inch needles which is what you need when you do hats and I want to make hats as gifts. My goodness ladies this is so perfect because it’s so professionally done you can’t even tell it was knit flat and seamed! You saved me! Thank you thank you. I can’t wait to show my mother who also knits!!

Just finished the hat. I literally started knitting like two weeks ago and I decided a hat would be my next project after knitting a scarf. This was really easy to follow but I always ended up with 2 knit at the end, I'm pretty sure I ate some stitches but oh well, I'm a newbie! I think I finished it with about 100 yards because my skein was 175 and I have some left over. Thank you for being so easy to follow!

Hi Joanne, I'm a 23yr old preschool teacher from south florida who just recently began knitting. It has been helping me relax, even though many of my friends have been calling me "an old lady." Your videos are so helpful step-by-step for me to follow. Thank you!!! I just started on a hat for my boyfriend using this tutorial, and so far it is looking great. I hope it looks as nice as yours when it is complete, as i have never made a hat before. I will let you know when im done :) sincerely, Sara

Good for you! These are really nice. I have a knitting class group and each person makes one to take to people that are getting chemotherapy. They love them! (the nurses too) You can make them with thinner cotton yarn for the summer. It has been very windy here lately and a thin hat makes the flying hair stay! lol Happiness is contagious! Be well.

Thanks so much Joanne! So It's around 150 metres.... I really like the way you do the finishing part - threading the last 5 sts into a blunt sewing needle and knotting off; also I like the way you stitch the sides to make it round (a beanie) - you are doing everything very neatly, which I like very much. Thanks a lot for this tute, and look forward to many more to come. God Bless.

I made two of them as well and used 100 and 115 cast on because I have a big head obviously and I like them loose. . lol. They are warm and super comfy. I made one to match a scarf I bought while in Britain. Red , white and blue plaid was the scarf so I did a whiteish. not super white and one in navy blue. thanks. They are one of the easiest. Just sat there watching a series on Netflix and whipped them up!

You are amazing too! I believe it takes one to know one! It's a wonderful legacy what mothers and grandmothers leave us. Knowing how to knit. My mother taught me when I was 5! Of course, I designed my own things because I learned how to knit before I knew how to read. LOL. Have a happy time knitting. It's very relaxing and creative. You already crochet, so your fingers have memory skills already. It helps!. Have a Happy New year!

You are amazing! I'm so excited to make this hat! My Grandmother is 94 and she just taught me the basic knit/purl stitches about a month ago. I've been practicing and this looks like something I'd be able to whip up. Most of the patterns I want to try are way above my current skill level. (I'm not used to that as I've been crocheting for about 10 years so I can pretty much follow any written pattern I find!) My Grandma lives about 3 hours away so I'll be watching more of your videos. I am glad you watched the video. The instructions don't make much sense without seeing how it's done. That's why we are here! It's not very hard to knit a sweater. We will be posting instructions for that too. You may start with 2 rectangles and make a tunic, before making a sweater. Go little by little. We have pictures of the Fan and Feather tunic.I'll have to write instructions and make a video, for people that are not quite ready for a sweater. Thanks much.

Hi Joseph. I don't know why I cant see your question here. But you were asking that since you will be using multiple colors for your beanie, should you do it differently or change anything. No dear, you can change colors at any time, and your knit stitches will be on the right side. You don't need to do anything different. Of course, the change of colors will show on the purl stitches and that's OK. Happy to know you are being creative!

Hello dear Nazokat. It doesn't matter how many rows you knit. What is important is that you have the 6 1/2 inches before you start taking off stitches. Every person knits differently, so it would be very difficult to tell you how many rows. Now, if you want your hat to have a brim, (a piece that turns over on the edge), you can add about 3 inches. Thank you for your interest in our website tutorials! Be well.

No problem. Here it is: Row 1-Knit 3, purl 3, until the end of the row and end with knit 1. Row 2-Purl 1, knit 3, purl 3 until the end of the row. Repeat these 2 rows until you have 6 1/2 inches. You cam make it longer if you want to fold the hat. Row 3 is the same as row 1. You start with knit 3. You want all your stitches to make a k3, p3 ribbing. Be well!

Good for you! It's a good idea to start with an only knit project. Then you make a swatch with only purl (It will turn out looking as if you knit every row). Then you can make a project like this. Be well!
