I I'm really enjoying your wartime knitting videos. My grandmother was an expert knitter and knit for the Red Cross. I still have one of her olive drab sweater vests that she made for my father when he went off to war. She could even keep knitting in the blackouts. when I was a teenager I asked my great-grandmother to teach me to knit but Grandma came in and found her teaching me continental and had a fit ..she wanted me to learn American style.. an argument ensued so I just left the room.. my dad asked me what was the matter and I told him about the argument so he went and got encyclopedia and we sat down together and he taught me how to knit.

I have my grandmother's original WWII knitting pattern book.... she made hats for my grandfather out of it. (She HATED knitting and sewing, so the fact that she knitted something for him meant she loved him A LOT!) A few years ago I made that same hat for my son. 🧡

My favorite wartime knitting pattern is the one from the V&A for a balaclava with earholes for "telephone operations". They look absolutely ridiculous, and I would love to know if the soldiers actually wore them. 🤣
@ShannonMakes

Omg yes, I’ve seen them! As someone who bikes home 30 mins in negative temps, I absolutely have considered wearing a balaclava, and I imagine that if my duty required me to hear clearly, I’d probably use the holely ones… but yea, they look pretty ridiculous 🤣🤣

Thank you! It was definitely a bit tricky to find information from a purely Canadian standpoint, much harder than from the US side of things, so I had to embrace both, but I think it worked out well! Glad you liked it, and hope you find the other videos in the series as interesting (and of course the history of wartime knitting delves a bit more into marginalized communities and their contributions, using many of the sources I shared with you the other day!!)

Lovely Cosy video! I, for one, am impressed with your ability to manage a wood fire. I have knit sweaters and hats for years, but recently I have become fascinated with Knitted Knockers, an international group that makes breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomy. There are so many opportunities for knitted and crocheted things, it adds an extra level of satisfaction to the work.

I love wood fires, one thing I miss is heating our bottom half of our old farm house with a wood stove. Although during that time (having to make sure there was enough wood on to last the night, or the feeling of chill early morning if it didnt make it through, or collecting enough wood from the outside pile to the insude pile hehehe what a chore.) which was bout 10-14 years ago, I would have been wishing I didn't have too. Hahahah but now I miss the smell, the heat, the crackling and the glow, oh and the ability to have a simmering pot of anise and cinnamon sticks on top spreading holiday scents that comes with it. Really enjoyed the video and hearing the crackling in the background!

I’ve been a crochet woman since I was taught in 4th grade, I’m now 31 and crochet all the time, there is never a time I don’t have one of several projects going at the same time. And having attempted to learn to knit several times decided it was something I would just never learn to do. I thought I’d never do it because I just didn’t not like it as much as crocheting. However, with that being said seeing this piece, this vest done and knowing all the history behind not just the vest but the socks and all sorts of other items being made for the many war efforts in the past has reignited my desire to try and learn how to properly knit. I also hope I can possibly make this amazing vest for myself in my size, and definitely for my grandfather who I know would absolutely appreciate one made from me for him. Thank you for sharing and for getting so detailed in the other video about the history of knitting in our world especially in those times of need.

I find it's often harder to learn a new skill when you are already so comfortable and fluid with another, similar skill - it's how I feel about learning to knit in other styles. I've tried, and each time I get frustrated at how slow it's going and how uneven my tension is, and just switch back to knitting in my normal style because it's just SO MUCH FASTER and more comfortable! But here's to hoping that this time will be the charm, and that you allow yourself the grace and time to be a novice at knitting, because if you stick with it, there's no choice but to improve and eventually master the skill! Glad you enjoyed the video, and happy holidays!

This video is fantastic - the editing, the corgi, shots of the countryside, the fire, corgi presence, knitting, history soundtracks, the beautiful corgi, and all your research to say nothing of the stunning finished vest and the gorgeous corgi. I loved seeing how you did the seams - they totally vanished so I will be using that style of seaming on the sweater I'm currently knitting for myself. Did I mention how much I enjoyed your lovely corgi dog? I adore corgi dogs and miss the two I've had something dreadfully.

Thank you so much! You're the second person to comment on my fire skills, but honestly, working with dry wood is so easy! Such a wonderful companion video and so gracious to share the patterns. I was thinking you might share a hat or a vest but not ALL of them. Such a generous cache. Your video pictures and editing are wonderful and in the spirit of the heirloom subject. I have a section of my family,great grandparents, that migrated from Tennessee thru Illinois (where most of my line stayed) to western Canada. As Canada is suffering in this current administration I often think of them with prayers and I extend this to you as well. You do the country proud. Thank you and God Bless!

Glad you enjoyed it nonetheless, and you'll almost certainly enjoy my next video, which I've nearly finished scripting, which is about the broader history of Wartime Knitting, and has a lot of material and info from WWI as well as other wars! And I say if you want to try knitting, definitely give it a go! (and I also recommend you learn Continental style rather than English style b/c it's faster, but I actually talk a bit about that in this next video too!)

I’m thinking about making a few balaclava for some colleagues at the Historic Weapons Safety Course I’m an instructor at. While I do 18th century, there are four guys that teach early 20th century. It’s still chilly in March in Alabama, so I’m sure they’ll be grateful. I love how your vest turned out, and I always enjoy sleeping corgi footage 😊

Oh definitely I think the balaclavas will be welcome! They look a tad goofy to the modern eye, but I honestly find them so practical I've got one on my list for bike rides! Thanks for the lovely words

Thank you, and you're welcome! It is a *crazy* fascinating topic, full of all these neat little historical tidbits, some amazing examples of knitwear (things knit in POW camps with barbed wire or cooking pot handles, for example) and just like the way that knitting permeated the national zeitgeist of both Canada and the US during both World Wars is so neat! I am just wrapping up the script for the "History of Wartime Knitting" video and I'm completely enveloped in the topic XD. I hope your sweater is progressing well (and faster than my vest, which was like molasses in wintertime)!!

Outstanding video and a lovely vest. I wish I could knit. (Carpal tunnel tho so it’s not an option.) Loved the origin of Stitch and Bitch!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 2 жыл бұрын
oooh yea, I imagine knitting is not something one should be undertaking with carpal tunnel (although I wonder if the Continental style would be easier for that?), and definitely not in the quantity or amounts of time that wartime knitters were dedicating to the activity!!
