In this video, I demonstrate how to correct the "stair-steppy" jog you get when knitting stripes in the round. For one-round stripes, see the link below for Helix Knitting.
The other videos in my slo-mo series can be found here:
• Slow-Motion Techniques
The yarn I use for demonstration is Paintbox Yarns Wool Mix Chunky.
The needles I use are from interchangeable sets:
Knitter's Pride Ginger 16": amzn.to/315rSrQ
Knitter's Pride Zing 16": amzn.to/3aOZSNv
If you are working one round stripes, the technique is different. You can see my video on Helix Knitting here: • Knitting Help - Helix ...
The hooded cape on the mannequin is Lost in a Dream Cape from Kraemer Yarns:
verypink.com/2...
The hat I use for demonstration is just something I made up for the video. Here are the quick instructions to make this baby hat, because I know someone will ask. :)
Fits 0-8 mo
Bulky yarn, size US 10 (6mm) needles.
CO 60, work 5 rounds 2x2
change color and knit 4 rounds
alternate color every 4 rounds until hat measures 5" from cast-on edge (that was the ribbing plus 4 rounds of stripes or 16 rounds, for me). On the last round of this section, place a marker every 12 stitches.
Decreasing
Round 1: k2tog, k to 2 stitches before marker, ssk, sm repeat between markers to end of round.
Round 2: knit
Repeat these two rounds until 10 stitches remain, k2tog around, knit 1 round. Cut yarn and string through the remaining 5 stitches.

Hello from Nova Scotia! I am knitting my first 2 colour toque for my Granddaughter. I have seen a couple tutorials about jogging. But, I must say this is the best one I have seen. I have a KZbinr friend & she told me about you. I am so grateful for that. Thank you so much for showing me in slow mode. It made it so much easier for me. I know I will be back. :)

I have come across your site for the first time now. I have been a knitter since I am 13 and now a well seasoned senior. I knit on and off when I have time but want you to know that you site has renewed my interest big time. I was asked to make a baby sweater for a newborn or maybe a 6 month old an now with your site I will feel confident that I won't take on anything I can't finish. Not only are you beautiful, lovely but your site is just incredible with the opportunity to follow on the slow motion end. Thank you so much. I must ask about the yarn you mention as I am not aware of that brand. It seems it is not sold in any of the leading craft or knitting shops I know on Long Island. There is one slow motion I do not see that I would like to and that is the casting on which, I believe starts with just one strand and not having to leave a long tail. Once again, thank you.Edye

This is extremely helpful to me. I have been knitting the two different colors together for several stitches and then dropping the old color and moving forward--secure but does show up on the finish stock. The idea of tying a knot for the two in the back is something I have not ever done. I always thought knots were a big no-no however I will try this. Thank you very very much. PS the slow motion helps me

Would this also apply to Fair Isle when you are changing colors almost every row? Also is it possible to fix previous rows or do I need to just frog it all.

Thanks for this slow motion version. I have been using your jogless technique since you first posted the original video on it. Do you still tie the 2 tails together with a knot after you add a new color? I find that step to be a big help as well.

I've got another question. What if you would like to change colour every round? So not continue with the blue, but with another colour. Would you then change colour in that first stitch and then pick up the blue right leg at the start of the rond after that? (Now the blue and pink "share" that first stitch, so then only pick up the blue leg of that shared stitch?)

No - does not look odd. You can see in the video that the stripes end up looking really even, and will be more even after blocking.

Can the same thing work if the old color is a purl row and the new color is also purl row before switching back to stockinette?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I find that doing this technique with a purl stitch doesn't always improve the look...in my experience, it usually looks better if you work the technique with thinner yarn, but it doesn't look so good with bulkier yarn. You can always work the technique, take a look at the work, and decide which way it works better.
@kjrussell8831

VeryPink Knits thank you. Sometimes I have the yarn forward then slip the stitch then put the yarn back so it shows as a purl

How about the colour change jog when you do colourwork in the round? Because I tried this once in colourwork, but it made it look wierd in a different way because the colour underneath overlapped the new colour (which you dont want since it's part of a figure you try to create). A lot of colourwork sweaters (or socks) are knit in the round and I cant find a way how to deal with the jog at the beginning of a new round
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 жыл бұрын
You can use this technique for fair isle, but depending on the color pattern you're knitting, it may or may not improve the look. Also, it may improve the look on one round, and not the next. It depends on whether there is more than one color at the end/beginning of the round...the best thing to do is to give it a try, take a look at the work, and decide whether or not to work this technique on that round.
