I inherited my grandmother’s knitting patterns. I have so many of them. They are very similar to the pattern you described. One size, minimal directions and they expect you to know a lot more than what we do today. Most of my grandmothers patterns didn’t even have a schematic with the measurements. I live in the United States

I love the Norwegian pattern. It reminds me of old Polish sewing patterns. Similar amount of information. They assume most of it common knowledge and you just need few pointers to create new garment. I also got my sewing patterns from my grandma.

That old pattern is so amazing🤩 A while back I was an intern at a museum where I got to digitize knitting patterns and colorwork charts from the 40s and 50s. I learned that it was common back then to go and rent charts like the one in your pattern, because knitters back then just knew how to design colorwork jackets and sweaters themselves. Super fascinating!

Love this episode and so glad to see you got the green Nutiden sweater done - it's beautiful! I've started a Plotulopi sweater that I had hoped to finish in time to wear it to Iceland on vacation but that didn't happen. Which is fine, I can now take my time with the colorwork and really enjoy the process! Maybe even try making a pattern of my own.......... we shall see!

Hey Inga, thank you for the lovely episode and showing that old Norwegian Knitting pattern. Knitters back then were very skilled - they'd just whisk up a garment so easily and didn't need further instructions; quite amazing. I fell in love with the Jules Genser that you showed in your previous episode and ordered my copy of the book and ready to CO. I learnt to knit about fifty years ago 🤪! I love the detail designers now give in patterns. I still do condense instructions as often I find they can be a bit overwhelming on first glance ! I’m knitting an Icelandic jumper at the moment with less than one page of instructions including the colour work! Your jumper looks so cozy and such a beautiful colour. Great podcast 🙏

Your knitting and projects are such an inspiration. When you were knitting the Amy Slipover from the Sandnes Garn 2202 booklet, I searched and found the booklet from Mother Knitter online store in New Jersey, USA. I purchased the yarn for the Jules Genser in order to get the booklet. I've started knitting the Jules with double stranded mohair, light sage green, bc I was afraid it would be too see through for my daughter. I've since ordered more Mohair and Mother Knitter was able to match the dye lot, that was a nice surprise! I'm using 3mm needles with the double strands of Mohair. I hope to finish in time for my daughter's birthday in March. Can't wait to see your Jules Genser finished! I'd like to make the Guernsey Genser and Lou or Cherry Genser in Nutiden too. Your Guernsey Genser looks very cozy, similar color to my Sandnes Garn mohair. Thanks for sharing your knitting and time with us 🤩

Old patterns are so interesting. I’ve heard that vintage patterns were pretty much all written in a similar way- minimal sizes and instruction. I’m not sure if you watch Roxanne Richardson but she completed a long term project knitting sweaters from each decade from the 1890’s to the 1990’s to see how patterns, techniques, etc changed over time. Very cool!

The cowl thats too small: pick up sts from the side , undo the bind off from the arms..... Then do a tubular bind off using more rows than the usual four. If youve never done it before do it! Its such an easy and fabulous addition to your knitting skills. Suzanne Bryan has the best tutorial and beware there are others giving the wrong instructions and youll create an altogether different thing , actually called an italian bind off.

This was a really fun episode. I enjoyed learning about the old Norwegian knitting pattern. I do like patterns that are sparse - easier to follow in some ways- but this one is maybe a bit too sparse for my skill level! You’d have to be a real expert to knit from that.

I love the sweaters offered in the Sandnes Garn Soft Knit for Women, but boy is this book hard to come by. Living in MA I found a yarn store in VT that says they can order it for me---my fingers are crossed! Hi Inga, beautiful sandnes garn sweater, the book is available in US from Mother Knitter. I did an islender jumper from Sandnes Gsrn that was perfect until the neck and is now going in the clothes drop!! I don’t like Norwegian patterns , the problem being with bottom up raglan once you reach the neck and do the back and forth with decreases and Colorwork It gets very hard!! I’m actually going to try another Sandnes Garn islender in Sisu , the same construction, I hope it comes out!! That gorgeous Norwegian jacket is from a time when men and women knit without patterns at all . If you follow Arne and Carlos , Arne used to knit while milking the cows , without pattern. For me, I like a very line by line pattern because after all the money and time invested I hate to throw the garment out , and this has happened before. All your jumpers are beautiful. I still have too many wips, after I clear some out I am quitting knitting I love having a tv knitting project, but it’s causing me stress!! I still love your podcast, especially the acquisitions!! Looking forward to the next!!

This was a fun episode, especially the recipe review! I knit a pattern called Braided in Red from 1988 Vogue Knitting that was almost as terse. It was less than one page, including a photo and a chart. It had a braided (knit tab style) allover cable design, saddle shoulders and was all knit flat and seamed. Seaming the cabled saddle to the cabled body, running in opposite directions was the worst. The pattern just said something like 'sew pieces together'.......still, I finished and lived to tell the tale.

I have my mothers old Norwegian patterns. Plus a book of children’s more modern patterns sent to me by my cousin. In Norwegian. Good thing I have a dictionary to help me. Lol

I think you have a nice marriage of your skills, your grandmother’s memory and your bullet calendar. Take your video camera and upon your meetings with your grandmother have her teach you the sweater recipe….document, document so you can teach a family member or your offspring.

No i have an airco aswell and heated floor in one of the barhrooms and also invested in some panel ovens :) but its still cold😅
