Knitting Tutorial for m1R and m1L Increases

This knitting tutorial demonstrates how to work a M1R (make 1 right - right leaning increase) and a M1L (make 1 left - left leaning increase)! I hope you find it helpful!

An easy way to remember which side to pick up the yarn from is that for a Right leaning increase you insert the needle from the Rear(back) of the stitch. So, R for R which means Left is simply the opposite because no R.

Here is the question. What am I missing? So, the pattern I started shows Row 1(rs) - k4 M1L knit to last 4 sts, M1R, k4 Row 2(ws)- k4, M1R knit to last 4, M1L, p4 On Row2, after knitting 4sts, where I have to do M1R, the strand is doubled because what I did on the first row. It makes a little hole. Is this right to you? I am confused... The pattern does not mention anything about the double strands. Please help!

I was so confused with the instructions for making the m1R and m1L. I kept using the right needle instead of the left one for picking up the bar. My cowl was looking very strange. Thanks for the tutorial. 😃

I was fighting with m1pr and m1pl just the other day, kept getting holes so....I ripped it ALL back 😭 Purling into the back leg is a proper pain. At least now I can do the knit m1l and r, thank you Andrea 🥰

i understand how to m1l and m1r but what stitch of the cast on do you pick up as the pattern calls for cast on 5 stitches row 1 k2 m1l knit to last 2 stitches m1r k2?

That makes so much sense. I’m starting the Nightshift Shawl and those M1R are really tough in the beginning. Any tips? I’m having trouble getting through the setup stage of knitting without having trouble and restarting. Maybe I’m knitting too tight? I can’t seem to lift the bar and then when I get it on the left needle, there is no room to knit it. Make sense?

EXCELLENT!! This is the BEST explanation ever! I've watched about 10 of these instructions, and this is the one that truly gets it! Most have you pick up the bar with the right hand needle, but then you have to figure out how to get it back on the left needle in the proper direction. There's another video out there that uses the left needle, but calls them the opposite - they say the m1R is leaning to the left and vice-versa! I've seen enough of these to know that's wrong! OMG so confusing! This is the one, people - you won't get a better or clearer instruction than this one!! Andrea Mowry, thank you so much!!! PS, fyi, there are videos where people don't make you watch them knit all the way across, they pause their camera and all we see is the important stuff. In case you'd be interested in doing that.
