I have been using DPNs for years and never knew about the cozies. Thanks for that tip! I like to cast on one extra stitch and then slip the first co stitch over the last when joining in the round. It helps to eliminate that little jog on the cast on edge.

I love DPNs for socks. Great tips! I make my own DPN "cozies." Ball point pens often have caps. I have lots of orphan caps when the pens die. I drill two tiny holes next to each other at the base of the two caps. I take a piece of elastic, shorter than the DPN needle and sew each end to a cap. The two caps slip over the ends of the four needle, along with the extra fifth needle. Also, I use tiny craft rubber bands as the beginning of round marker. They come in different colors so I can change the color to remember a decrease round or a plain round, as for toes.

I agree ! Circular needles are so easy to use and hold compared to dpns.....I use cheap fixed circulars in several lengths but mostly longer length ones using 2 loops method which works even for baby hats and socks as I find this avoids stretching the yarn and prevents holes .

I watch too much youtube, take too much advice and order up everything on amazon. DPNs are the best. They seem intimidating. I'm always losing the loose needle when I'm in bed watching tv, but I think that once you get used to using them, they are the easiest method. They are flexible! Your work moves with you a lot easier, but that's me and my knitting style... I love dpns

When I first started knitted, I likened knitting with DPNs to wrestling with a porcupine. Once I discovered magic loop, I've rarely gone back to DPNs. Just cast on my first pair of socks in many years and am trying 9 in circs. Might go back and revisit DPNs again as well.

To avoid using a BOR marker when working with DPNs, I keep half of the stitches on the first needle and one quarter of the stitches on each of the other needles. I know I'm beginning a new round when I start working the "full" needle (I learned this trick from Tin Can Knits)

Being a self taught knitter, I found your tip about needle placement for knit/purl stitches on dpn’s very valuable! I’m comfortable with and really like dpn’s but doing purl stitches has been terrifying for me. ( l mostly do vanilla socks and those patterns don’t need too many purl stitches- specially at the beginning of a needle) I just did a project that has a tremendous number of purl stitches and now have some very funky looking ladders just because I didn’t know how to transition from one dpn to the next with purl stitches. I did a search and your video has been the only one that has shown me the actual procedure. ( It was quick so I doubtless be viewing it a lot until I get the “knack” of it). Thank you, thank you. I always knit my socks with bamboo needles as the yarn doesn’t slip off the needles. Love dpns. I have tried all the different ways to knit socks but always come back to top down patterns on dpns. To avoid the gap on the first stitch on the first round I slip the first stitch from beginning needle onto the previous needle and then slip the last stitch from that needle over and onto first needle and start to knit-no gap!

Hello! I just found you a few days ago and am a new Subbie. I’ve been knitting for about 60 years. My Mom taught me when I was about ten. The only needles we had were 14” aluminum Boyes in a couple of sizes and a few sets of aluminum dpns, so that’s what I learned with. Mom started picking up knitting magazines and we bought needles as necessary for patterns we wanted to try. We were Floridians and, sadly, the only yarn available to us was Red Heart acrylic in worsted weight. I still prefer dpns to two circs, and I don’t like magic loop at all. Btw, I use ChiaoGoo needles exclusively now, except when I need dpns in sizes larger than ChiaoGoo makes.

I'd like to offer one of my tips for casting on socks.I cast on over 2 needles, then slip one out halfway through the cast on. I end up having half the stitches on one needle and the half on the second, I transfer stitches to the third needle and adjust the number on each needle. It gives me a looser cast on. I learned to knit socks before magic loop was invented so my go to is to use double points. Lately I have been doing more magic loop and do a hybrid like you spoke of. I like doing the heel, toe and gusset on double points and the foot and leg on magic loop. I never heard of the dpn cozies, I will have to check them out. I have a metal gadget that holds all 4 needles in place to store in my bag. Another great video Caleb.

I love DPN's, it brings me back in time, knitting like an old timer. It may be fiddly at first but actually it's quite enjoyable after you understand how to manage it. What you share especially regarding the first stitch of a needle, whether it be knit or purl, to place the needle below and above is very true! I find that very helpful as well. I also like DPN's because I can knit without using a stitch marker to mark the beginning, I rely mostly on the CO tail. Since I rarely use magic loop, I wish to get some really long DPN's to knit bigger things. lol 🤣😅

If the sock is going to be a take everywhere project, I have learned to use magic loop, because it is harder to drop stitches off the end, and quicker to drop in the bag when the light turns green...I purchased some cardboard tubes from Knit Picks to store my DPN sock projects, and they work great.

What I was looking for in yr video was “how to keep knitting going in same direction “ after cast-on. Working w 4 or 5 needles, needles can twist so that u are not knitting in same direction by row 2 or 3. I like yr video style, even tho visuals goes a little too fast for my eye. Minor addition to finding needles best for particular project: Yes, so agree bamboo helps us keep yarn on the needle. But talking socks here, and often thinner yarns, often worked on 1s or#2s - my experience w my much - loved wooden needles or bamboo, is that # 1’s can’t wait to snap on the project, and #2s are only a little better.

That’s a great point regarding wooden needles. I haven’t had that happen to me yet, but I haven’t put a ton of mileage on my wooden dpns. As for speed, the KZbin player does have a playback speed feature that helps you tailor the speed of videos to your liking 💚

I love DPNs. My tip for casting the cuff is to cast onto a one-size larger, longer DPN with all your stitches, then knit off with the ones you are going to use for the rest of the sock. Laddering, give a little tug after the first stitch on each needle to tighten up the gap. I had not heard of DPN cozies, though. Thanks for that!

Good information, Caleb! Your tip for needle placement is something I learned over the years...wish I had known it in the beginning. I knit cuff down and cast on onto the 4 needles (I use 5) up front. After about 5 rounds, I switch to magic loop, and then switch back to dpns for the heel flap and gusset. After the decreases, I finish up with magic loop. I love the heel turn and a Kitchener toe.

I am a DPN-Girl since I start knitting socks. To avoid lettering between two needles is the tension. Knit the second and maybe the third stitch tighter. And start your neddle with a knit stitch. I find it more easier to control the tension of the yarn with a knit stitch than with a purl stitch. And then practice, practice, practice 😉

Great tips. I love using DPNs to knit my socks. I use a BOR marker when I first start my socks after a few rounds I take it off. I just make sure I have an even number of stitches on each needle. I can see my cast on yarn tail and I will usually place a cute progress keeper or locking stitch marker on the first needle. Suggestion- when switching up needles within the sock make you do the same for each sock. The different needles can have slightly different gauges, between brands. Can be noticeable when knitting a patterned sock like a Regia or Opal.

I use flexiflips and 9” circulars for my sock knitting. Flexflips for the toes and heals and 9”circulars for the basic ‘tube’ part of the sock. I find it really easy to do this way.

I love knitting socks and I love using DPN's. I've found that knitting on a set of 5 needles helps me keep track of where I am. One needle represents the top of your foot, one is the bottom and the other two represent the sides. I have to say that I cringe every time I see someone pull the Magic Loop and stretch out stitches. For the longest time my worst problem was with laddering between the needles but I've solved that partly using the technique you described and being aware of the tension before and after the needle change. Needles? To me it mostly depends on the fiber. I'm addicted to Addi needles but if they are too slippery then I switch to my other favorite Crystal Palace Bamboo. I've been knitting for more years than I care to say and I've got quite a collection of other needles I've tried but, I keep going back to Addi and Crystal Palace. Stitch markers. There are lots of wonderful stitch markers out there but I just use a piece of contrasting yarn. They don't go too far if you drop one. You can tie it in a loop to place it on your needle or just knot the ends to place over a stitch like a shawl and easily pull it out later. Thanks for all the videos!

Yes, Agree about cast on with one needle and redistributing stitches. Also, cast on one extra, and before you start, use it to join the work. So just bind it off when you join tge ends together, so you are back to the right number before you begin. It makes the join less noticeable.

I find 9-inch circulars the easiest for vanilla socks. No worries about ladders. I use DPNs for heel flap and turn, then back 9-inch circs, until I get to the toe decreases. I use a small crochet hook to pick up gusset stitches. I'm practicing Magic Loop and getting better with DPNs. Will try some of your tips. ( Relative newbie sock knitter.)

I use a combination of techniques when knitting socks. Mostly taught myself through trial and error. Use a small circular needle for the easy knitting and dpns for the heels and toes. My dpns are wood, find bamboo to be too slippery. Wish I could figure out the magic loop method, but can't figure out the cast on. Tried the 2 circular needle method and like it, except for all the dangly cord business. I had to stop knitting socks for myself, no way I can wear them all(i have at least 20 pairs)!

I am very much committed to DPNs. I just love them. Magic loop and I just don’t get along. I cast on stitches evenly divided. I like your laddering advice. I am not using a BOR stitch marker, instead I am using the thread from the cast on. DPN cozies are great and really a must have. I learned to not use wooden needles for socks. Metal needles are a bit sturdier.

I've tried various methods for sock knitting and failed utterly at nearly all of them. Two-at-a-time using the magic loop method is some kind of witchery I've never been able to figure out. I just mostly stick with the classic: knitting in the round with DPNs. I learned how with Silver's Sock Class years ago and I've used that pattern exclusively ever since because the socks I knit from her tutorial pattern have always fit me just fine. I've since start trying her pattern with 9" circs, mostly because I want to see if using that needle will work better for avoiding ladders. I CAN say, without having gone past the cuff yet, that small-circumference circs are absolutely HELL on my hands, so unless this method really turns out to produce what I consider to be a better quality sock...I probably will just go back to DPNs.

I learned to knit using dpns but switched to other methods after about a year. I prefer 9 inch circulars or using 2 circulars. I have the chiagoo mini twists and the chiaogoo twisties with the blue cable. I knit sweater sleeves using the chiaogoo sets or two circular needles. My tension is a lot better with these methods.

Another way to prevent laddering which works for me is to knit the stitch after one dpn ends and instead of using another dpn to start, I continue with the right knitted dpn. I call this stealing from the next needle so that everytime stealing one stitch you mimick cable knitting in a way

To mark the beginning of a round I use an old-fashioned methode (from before the invention of stitch markers). All you need is a piece of different coloured (cotton) yarn. After each round (or after two or any number you want) you change it from front to back or from back to front, so it will weave through the space between the last and the first stitch. At the end you can just pull it out.

I love DPNs; however, I like casting on and doing the cuff ribbing on 9” circulars (prefer cuff down). The only time I prefer magic loop is when I fly. A dropped DPN can mysteriously disappear on a crowded plane.
