Step by step tutorial on how to knit in the round on double-pointed needles for beginners

In this video I am showing total beginners how to knit with DPNs. A needle set of 5 is not that easy to handle and it takes some practice.
But, other than the 5 needles, you actually don't need to learn new techniques. All stitches are still performed the same way.
You start with a standard longtail cast on (here's how to do that nimble-needles...) and then you distribute the stitches evenly on 4 needles.
For an invisible join, you slip the first stitch of the first needle on the last needle, bind off one stitch and slip the remaining stitch back tot he first needle and start knitting.
When knitting with double-pointed needles, make extra sure you keep a high tension on the first two stitches of every new needle to avoid laddering.
For beginners, I recommend bamboo needles, though I personally usually the Knitter's Pride Karbonz needles.

Fabulous clear video. I appreciate the close ups and the fact you’re focussed on the essentials. You don’t talk about things that are unnecessary or waffle on about other things. I can’t tell you how annoying it is when you’re just wanting to follow and knit. And learn. Not have a chat or hear about someone’s life story. You’re brilliant at focussed learning and I’m grateful. I too use 5 needles for socks. So much easier than 4!

it really is...yet..for some reason so many people in the US only use 3 and I'm always like..."Whaaaat...? Why would you do that!" (except for super small diamter projects with 12 stitches or so)

@@NimbleNeedles I've never tried knitting on dpn either - apart from the fact I've never made anything needing them, I was always 'afraid' of them. When my mum passed all her stuff to me, it included a couple of sets of dpn - but in the UK they only come in sets of four, like the US. I guess if I wanted a fifth needle I'd have to buy a whole new set on line.

Hi Norman, I am so thankful for this tutorial. The last time I knitted was some 30 years ago. Now I have decided to knit a raglan sweater in the round, top down. I have never knitted on round needles before, I have never done German short rows, raglan increases, I have never added a mohair yarn to pad the volume, etc. Smarter people would likely decided to spread the all these "firsts" into multiple project, but hahaha, not me! (It's not courage, it's brain damage BTW). I thought that once I get to the sleeves the work will be flying - could not have been more wrong. I was going on round needle as much as I could and then I had to switch to DPN's - I figured some of the stuff on the fly but I ended up frogging the entire DPN section because it did not look nice. After I watched your tutorial yesterday, I started anew and finally I made it down to the cuff (ribbing). It was still a struggle but not as bad as before. I maintained my 'square' and it helped tremendously. Of course I made some mistakes / dropped some stitches but everything has been corrected and one sleeve is finished. Cannot thank you enough!

I finally got it! It took a few failures, but I can now do this. It was extremely fiddly at first, and yes, the first few rounds are the hardest, but after that, it is smooth sailing ⛵️ Now, after trying the mini circulars (murder on my hands), 3 types of sock looms (what a waste of money for me), and magic loop (really slow and cumbersome--IMO), I can make socks. I am so happy that I tried dpn's again and practiced. Thank you, Norman ❤🎉

The best video on dpns I’ve seen ! Just before finding your tutorial I was fighting with my dpns .. first time using them. I took a break, watched lots of other tutorials.. nothing was helping.. the ladder was growing .. and then .. boom ! You came along! My needles are now under control, the ladders are getting smaller, actually now that I barely have a gap between the needles it feels a lot more secure and sturdy. Before I felt like I had to hold all the needles at once because everything was flopping around ... this video is perfect: great tips and also to the point

I am surprised that you are the first teacher that doesn't want me to stop the tutorial. Usual teachers explain too much or get tired themselves of explaining or tell how easy it is (for a beginner things are not easy). There's no irritating background music (I think?!) and you explain clear and to the point. I think that's partly because you are a man... Thank you Norman!

I am just starting out and found two sets in the closet that each have only four needles so I would not even have been aware that you can get sets of five. Thanks for a great tutorial! You bring up many excellent tips! The way you join in the round is the way I use when I actually join. Some people suggest to just start knitting and use the tail to even out the edge when the project is complete. I have done both but there is something about actually joining that I feel comfortable with. I have used the full 4 needles but tend to use 3 as I’m usually just finishing up the top of a hat so there aren’t many stitches. You bring up a great point for using all 4, so you can try on the sock! Love that! And I really appreciate how you show us how to make sure the needles are properly positioned. Very important! I’m not sure I’ve ever thought about that! Thanks again! Enjoy your day!

Woohoo I'm knitting in the round! It was a fail for circular needles for a hat, so I went back to my comfort zones ... crochet, or knitting flat. Thanks to THIS video, I decided to try DPNs. My knitting still needs work and practice, but I feel good progress happening! Thanks Norman!

This tutorial was by far the best I’ve seen. Very explanatory. Thank you so much, I love your videos. I am working on a cardigan and the pattern knits the sleeve from cuff to underarm using DPNs. I have never done this before so I am excited for your video.

This video was instrumental for me while I learned DPNs. Just made a baby hat with them. It came out great. No ladders. I have also tried magic loop, but can't seem to get the hang of it. I hope I'm not missing out on something by only knowing DPNs.

no, not really. I mean..both techniques have their "best use for" usecases but all things considered, they are interchangeable and it boils down to preferences.

Thank you so much for this video Norman. I haven't knitted for years but have recently got my passion for knitting back. I was taught by my grandmother so I knit the English style. I have always been so scared of knitting on the round but your video is so clear and easy to follow. After several unravelling and alot of swearing 🤭 I have managed to knit one fingerless glove... now for the second one. I am so pleased I have found your channel and am looking forward to improving my knitting with your help 😀

Welcome to my channel then, gill. Hope I won't disappoint you, even tho most of my videos are continental knitting 😅

I think the continental style looks less stressful on the hands. I plan to learn it if I can. I am sure, having watched alot of your videos, that your style of teaching suits me and hopefully after many years of English style I can learn something new. 😀

As usual, you explain this so well I think that I am going to try it out. Before, I had purchased sock knitting needles (they were really marketed that way -- sock knitting needles) and sock yarn. I think I'm going to give them a try.

I'm so thankful you made this video! For the longest time I've wanted to knit socks! Every other video I find has a pattern I need to buy for the video to make sense😪 Norman to the rescue! 💛 I'm so ready I've got this fantastic yarn waiting for me and new knitting needles just for sock making! 😁

I'm very glad you find my videos helpful. But please, don't shy away from paying for a pattern. Designers do need support as well. Otherwise there won't be any new patterns. Plus, paid patterns are usually test-knitted thoroughly.

@@NimbleNeedles I understand but I've already bought an entire book on sock making. I just didn't understand how to cast on with DPN. So in my case that would be pointless to purchase another pattern when I have 20 plus patterns in a book I've owned for years! So you see you showed me what I couldn't understand in the text. I needed to see it first to understand! You helped me understand!✌💛
