I'm glad I found this video! I've wanted to try the after thought heel, but was afraid to since I'm new to sock knitting. I'm giving it a try! Thanks.

Hi I'm new to your channel. I watched a couple of other toe up sock videos and the cast on was confusing. Your demo was so helpful! Not too slow, not too fast, just right for us beginners. Also, I like that you only did 1 sock at a time, less confusion. Thanks

How long do you make the foot for doing this kind of heel? I’ve seen Instructions saying it should be all the way to the back of the heel, or to the base of the heel. I’ve seen “foot length plus 1”, or “knit to foot length plus length of toe minus 1”… I’m so confused.

If you go to the very first comment on this video... she tells someone else that you put the afterthought scrap yarn in at a point that is 2" shorter than the full foot length....hope that helps?

I measure from tip of big toe to beginning of heel. In your knitting notes, note the inches or cm and jot down rows to get there. If you place markers every 10th row on front it helps. This info will be helpful on 2nd sock so they match. I place a row of waste yarn to mark that spot. Then continue on to rest of sock n

Greetings.....your tutorials are brilliant but I do have a question. I noticed you use two lengths of scrap yarn when constructing the afterthought heel. Why two? [Thanks so much.]

I'm not understanding what you mean when you say knit until your foot length? At what point are you referring? This was said at the 2:50 mark.

Hilarity's Mailbox I’d recommend knitting the foot (toe included) until your 2” short of your total foot length. You can find this length by standing on a piece of paper and having someone else trace your foot. Then measure end to end and subtract two inches. Hope that helps!

Why do you/she do two rows of waste yarn for the heel rather than one? The others I have seen do one row of waste then go back to the main yarn and just knit across the waste yarn.

Loved the toe instructions but unfortunately I'll have to leave you now as I don't want to do an afterthought heel. The whole point to me of knitting toe-up socks (I am weird and enjoy grafting the toe stitches of top-downs) is so I can have them as long as possible with no left over yarn and if I have to guess how much to save for the heel, this won't be possible.
@KnittyNatty

Hey Jacque! You definitely don’t need to do the afterthought heel. In fact, my preference is to do a short row heel called the fish lips kiss heel. Unfortunately, I can’t show the fish lips kiss heel because it is a paid for pattern. The fish lips kiss heel or another short row heel may be the solution for you!

@@KnittyNatty Many thanks for the link to the FLK heel. I have now bought the pattern (One whole dollar via Ravelry) and when I get the foot finished will do that one. Unfortunately not everyone is as honest as you are about respecting copyright and there are two videos showing it - but neither of them are particularly clear! However Sox Therapist's own two short videos on just the stitch itself are excellent so along with the pattern, I'm not anticipating too many problems.

Yes you can, and that's what I'm going to do. At the point where she adds the waste yarn you need to follow instructions elsewhere for one of the many different heels that can be done. Once the heel is finished on the group of 30 stitches, you then knit round all 60 again to do the leg.

Hi, I hope you could help me. I have gone through part 1 four times. And my toe looks great. No dropped stitches. The number on each needle is 30 and I’m thrilled. I then go on to part 2 I do my first 10 rows, the amount of stitches are still 30 on each needle and I put the lite bulb marker on the 15th stitch. All is well. By the 4th row in the second group of ten rows I start getting an extra stitch on each needle. I don’t understand how this is happening. I’m not increasing (Kfb). I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I don’t know why I’m acquiring extra stitches. I’m so upset I want to cry. What am I doing wrong? Please help me . Thanks so very much.

Donna Flushman oh no! ☹️ I’m sorry, that is extremely frustrating!! I’m not sure why that would keep happening consistently. The best advice I have is to count every single row to see if you can identify exactly when the issue is happening. Once you see those extra stitches, unknit that row slowly to see where those extra stitches are coming from. Common places to accidentally add stitches are on the places in between needles and possible at the marker. If all else fails, k2tog and carry on! 😉 You can do it!

at 5:55 minutes on this video it looks like she added the red waste yarn after 70 rows from when she added her first marker to the end of the increases for the toe. From a book I read it should be a little smaller than your actually toe to heel measurement depending how stretchy your yarn is.
@laceandbits
@laceandbits 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your foot size! The heel (on the 'bottom' set of waste yarn stitches) will make the corner for your heel to go into so the foot length is at the point where the top set of stitches just reaches the join between the top of your foot and the front of your ankle/leg. Try it on until it is right, then make sure you write the row count down so both socks are the same length.
