Hi I am making this hat for my new grandson due any minute now!!! My question is you don't give cast off directions. Do I just cast off all the stitches, do I sew all the working stitches like other hats? Please, let me know! I adore the hat and I'm working the second variation. Thanks Liz
@KnittycatsKnits3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liz, congrats and I am sure the cap you are making will be a great gift! The cast off for this stitch is just a regular cast off. I actually was just showing the stitch and not the actual hat in that video, so didn't show steps for the hat. But if you knit your hat in the flat (using regular needles and not circular needles), the you have a couple options. Once at the desired height for the cap, you can do 1 row of k2tog around (to decrease stitches to half), then transfer the stitches to a yarn (pass a tapestry needle with yarn through the stitches and then slide them off the needle). Then, you can seam the lengthwise edge to join the cap, then tie up the yarn ends around the stitches, which will tighten it up at the top. Another way is to cast off the stitches at the top (using a regular cast off technique) and then seam the cap lengthwise and then at the top. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

@@KnittycatsKnits Hi Just got your reply!! Thank you!! I've never gotten a reply so quickly!! FYI as we speak my daughter in law is giving birth to grandbaby #8!! I will use the k2tog. I'm also adding two pom Poms. I will take a picture when its completed. I'm using a 4mm needle. I made a twist to your hat. I added ten rows of k2, p1 with a 5mm needle then started the faux cable with a 4mm. It's gonna look great! Liz

The last row with the twits .. what you have write on the pattern isn’t what you do on the video .. so I’m a little confused.. pls advice x many thanks
@KnittycatsKnits3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jayne, as shown in video, the twist row is actually the third row in pattern, where you start with a P2, then do the right twist (RT) and the P2. Then for the rest of the row, you keep repeating the RT and P2 till the end. The last row (4th row) is same as Row 2. Please look in video description field and the first pattern there is the one I demonstrate (the detail in the video description is accurate; please disregard the little notecard you see in video as that has some errors). Hope this helps but let me know if you have more questions. Thanks for watching and best wishes!😊

Thank you for replying back. It sounds confusing but I think I figured it out. I hope? For the crown the ending of the hat in the circler needles. How do you do that part of the hat?
@KnittycatsKnits2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikola, for the crown (top) part of the hat, you typically have to decrease stitches. This changes based on hat patterns. I knit this faux stitch hat a while back and meant to do a video on it back then but didn't get to do it. I will aim to do one in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned 😊
@nikolaveselovsky73862 жыл бұрын
@@KnittycatsKnits Yes I know for sure you typically have to decrease stitches. I am left handed I find knitting patters more difficult if you are left handed and also unfortunately there are not too many videos from start to finish that are for left handed people. I look forward to many more of your videos in the future. Thank you happy holidays.

May I know which variation would result in a smaller gap between the cables while maintaining the same cable width?
@KnittycatsKnits3 жыл бұрын
Hi Flora, good question. Been a while since I knit this stitch but looking at the patterns in the video description field, I believe variation 2 will result in a shorter gap between the cables. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊
@mohsinadarr36654 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing such easy and nice cable designs kindly give me an idea of how many stitches for a three years child Regards
@KnittycatsKnits4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mohsina, glad you liked the pattern. In regards to your question, the number of stitches would depend on the circumference of the child's head. Typically, this would be about 20 inches (or 53 cm) - can check out typical hat sizes at tutorials.knitpicks.com/hat-size-charts/. When you know the yarn you wish to use and the needles, then it would be best to knit up a small sample with this pattern to determine the gauge. Let's say you try variation 1 in the pattern description (provided in the video description field), then you can cast on say 18 sts (x4 sts + 2) and knit a few rows in the pattern. Then can measure the width of the sample you knit. If it measures lets say 4 inches, then you know you will need to cast on 90 sts for the hat (since 4 inches = 18 sts, then for about 20 inches, you will need, 20 x 18, then divided by 4 = 90). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and best wishes!
@nikolaveselovsky73862 жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for the wonderful video. How many stiches do you cast on for adult size hat?
@KnittycatsKnits2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Nikola. The number of stitches to cast would depend on the type of yarn you are using and the needle size. A typical adult hat has a 21-inch circumference (when stretched); unstretched, the circumference should measure about 16 inches. The best way is to make a small swatch with the yarn/needles you want to use for the hat. Cast a few sts (as needed for the stitch pattern) and then knit up a few rows of the pattern. Then measure the width of the swatch and figure out the number of stitches accordingly (eg, if 15 sts gives a 4-inch width unstretched, then you need to cast on 15 x 4 = 60 sts; remember to add or decrease a few sts, depending on the pattern you choose). Hope this helps. I will plan to make a "figuring out gauge" video soon to demo this on more detail.

Hi there. What is the difference between the 2 variations in the patterns you provided? Thank you 😊
@KnittycatsKnits4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vineshree, good question. The difference is just in how far spaced out the mock cable forms. It is a bit more spaced out in the first variation than the second. I think either version looks good. Hope you give it a try. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊

Love the pattern, would you be able to tell me how many stitches I would need to make the hat in your tutorial please ❤
@KnittycatsKnits Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Sally! For a hat, the number of stitches to cast will depend on the yarn thickness and needle size. Suggest making a small swatch first with the yarn/needles you want to use. Knit up a few rows in pattern and then measure width, when unstretched and when stretched. For an adult hat, you typically need a 21 inch circumference (when stretched) and for stretchy patterns (like this one), about 16-17 incheswhen unstretched should be good. So then, you can figure out the number of stitches based on the swatch/sample you make (can check out my gauge video as it may be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZSrYZiigrqXrtEsi=HMPjPMiSYANZwqc9). Thanks again for watching and best wishes!🤗

How do you do this pattern in the round? It's a lovely stitch... :-)
@KnittycatsKnits4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gillian, great question! For knitting Variation 1 of the pattern in the round, cast on a multiple of 4 sts only. Then Rows 1 and 2 would be *K2, P2 (repeat from * to end). For Row 3, it would be *(RT, P2 (rep from * to end) and Row 4 would be same as Rows 1 and 2. For Variation 2 in the round, cast on a multiple of 3 sts only. For Row 1, *RT, P1 (rep from * to end). For Rows 2 and 4, *K2, P1 (rep from * to end). For Row 3: *K2, P1 (rep from * to end). Hope this helps. I have not done a project with this stitch in the round but now am tempted to try a hat knit in the round, thanks to your question😊 Best wishes!

I love all your videos. Your instructions are clear and precise. You provide sufficient detail without too much extra chatter that some instructors do. This is a great cable alternative. Do you know what multiple to use to change size should you want to make a baby blanket or afghan with this stitch? Or, is it too stretchy for that type of project? Thanks for all your patience and clarity. I look forward to seeing new videos so please keep them coming.
@KnittycatsKnits5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the lovely comments, Frederick! In the description, I have 2 variations of the stitch: either a multiple of 3 sts + 2 or a multiple of 4 sts + 2. I think either would work if you wish to use this pattern for a baby blanket. Being a cable-esque rib though, it mayl scrunch up a bit, but will be stretchy. It may be nice to add a moss (seed) stitch border (or even just a garter st border) at the bottom and the edges (if you do this, add those stitches after you calculate the sts needed for pattern). Hope this helps, but let me know if you have other questions. I just started a baby blanket using a mini leaves lacy stitch; hope to post the stitch video by this weekend. Thanks for watching my videos and the encouragement! Best wishes😊

Frederick, I also remember now that I used this stitch to knit a poncho a long time ago (a rectangular shawl that is folded over and seamed along one edge to convert to a poncho). It came out quite nice actually, so I think it would work just as well for the blanket. If you try it, do let me know how it turns out. Thanks!

Thank you, have been looking for this pattern, you made it so easy I know I can do it. Want to use in circle needle for a hat. How would that work?
@KnittycatsKnits5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jessie! Yes, you can definitely knit this hat in the round using circular needles. However, for the pattern (variation 1), to adjust for knitting in the round, you only need to cast on a multiple of 4 sts and do the following pattern: Rows 1, 2, and 4 will all be just K2, P2 rib. In Row 3, you will do the *RT, P2 (repeat this for whole Row 3). Would suggest making a swatch for gauge to figure out number of sts to cast for hat (be sure it is a multiple of 4). Once you knit hat to desired length (usually 7-8 inches), can transfer to double-pointed needles and do decreases (can do K2tog, P2tog all the way round for 1st dec row, then K1,P1 rib for next row. Repeat these 2 rows till you have about 4 sts left and then pass yarn through all sts an pull it to seal off the top. Hope this helps but reach out if you have questions. Thanks for watching and best wishes😊
