@MarkusPix, that's all fine and dandy, if you have the money to buy the high end of things (assuming that your experience with buying high end is the only experience anyone ever has with "high end" products and nobody else EVER had any "high end" products fail), or if you don't use the same gear to the extent that some of us do. I've had brand new cards from top brands fail me in the first week and I've had older cards that I've used reliably fail. It's a weird flex you're making here.

Good points. Although the double slot is really about redundancy, not length of recording. It’s mostly for wedding videographers and people that can’t afford to do a redo and losing footage is devastating to their business. True that 99% of filmmakers need a single card. I’ve had a corrupted SanDisc card after a shoot but thankfully the footage wasn’t that important! 😅

@@DariusOutdoorsI did with mine, I took my own camcorder and just randomly handed it to a guest and asked them to film it! I had no idea how competent they were or if they'd used one before, turned out it was their first time using one! To be honest I wasn't expecting much, it was just additional footage to add to the photos we were having done. So anything was going to be a bonus over stills! I was truly impressed with what they filmed 🎥 all nice and steady, framed beautifully and captured all the best bits!! All filmed on a very basic JVC Mini DV camcorder.👍😁

@@sidehustlevideosUk You know what happened if you messed up a roll of film? It was gone forever, you don't know about the millions of photographs lost because of camera issues or developing issues because you can't see them. You only see the shots that survived. Now you don't have to worry about that when shooting redundantly with digital cameras. Guess what people did before dual card slots and high capacity digital media? They would have multiple backup bodies with the same film and a similar or the same lens attached... just in case. I started using the AX100 in 2015. It is still the best video camera for most uses IMO. I have many other cameras now (including the ax700) but the AX100 is still my go-to camera. Perfect for run & gun type video. I can't believe they discontinued it without releasing a better camcorder. Regarding the card slots.. My videos are sometimes an hour or more long and I use 4k res. One card slot is fine for me.

I am also still using AX100 + Zoom H5 for sound, AX-100 in good lighting takes pretty nice still pictures, and AX-100 can also run from a USB via power bank, the color is pretty good, and the white balance could be better, and autofocus but otherwise its really great compact all-around camcorder. Mostly I am using 1080p, rarely 4k, once I did more than 6h 4k footage and it overheated but with 3h 4k videos it's fine. I had 2x corrupted SD cards one time there weren't important files the second time I managed to get back 75% of the footage. The second card slot is nice if 1 of the memory cards fails.

I could very easily blow a week's budget in a few seconds with an auto-winder, but by planning ahead, and knowing what I wanted to capture, I could get "The Shot" with just two or three frames, even when shooting fast action shots. Digital photography (and filmography) has allowed people to be lazy about the craft. Heaven forbid that some young buck has to change cards in the middle of a shoot. His head would explode if he realized how many times a film camera has to be reloaded in a day.

As an old school film professional photographer for 32 years you learn very quickly that film is expensive. You simply can’t afford to run and gun at weddings, social events and even doing portraits in studio. When I was shooting film I had a very good idea what each frame cost to shoot. Cost of film, processing proofs, paper originals and shipping to and from lab adds up very quickly. So you definitely learn to be frugal very quickly. Having a $8000.00 a month lab bill is jolting!

Agree. I've had a micro sd card failing on my phone. When plugged in, it crashes the Windows PC's Explorer process. Or the computer hangs for minutes, then snaps back to life for 30 seconds and loops like that. That's one of the ways how a memory card hardware fault looks like. So dual card slots is a must when possible. It's like opting out of cloud storage backup for a corporation's shared network drives, or SharePoint. When the information on the card matters, you need 2 cards if you can afford the extra cost. The more you shoot, the more likelyhood of card failure. You might be lucky and not get failure in years. But luck is not good enough. Also, air moisture and temperature are factors that affect electronics reliability, so different people, different memory card failure experiences. Unstoppable Coppier is a great FREE software for recovering data from problematic memory cards.

Most people who want double card slots are freaked out about their card failing and losing all of their footage. However, I think that’s silly. Newer flash memory cards are significantly more reliable than HI8, VHS, film, etc. and other mediums of the past. If you’re worried about it then do backups in the field or have a second shooter with you (if you’re doing wedding photography for example.) Great video as always Markus!

I get what some are saying about the redundancy thing, but I've never had a card fail on me, thank goodness. I've been filming and taking photographs for almost 25 years and I guess I'm lucky/fortunate enough not to have never had that happen to me before. The only time I ever used a dual card slot function is when I was on location taking photographs of a dance competition, and I wanted to be able to scroll through the photos on my tablet once the event was over and not have to have it chug through the high resolution images. I had one card record at a very small JPG format so I could just pull that card and easily scroll through the images on the table. But that was a very specific need that I didn't have to deal with much at all. Lol and yes, I do shoot in RAW even though I know you don't do that very often :D With dance competitions, the lighting changes so often between performances that sometimes I don't have time to go through to make adjustments on the fly. So having RAW images does help with that. It's annoying, and I wish it wasn't the case, but I made the mistake of shooting JPG only one time and I regretted it because there were some performances that had very dark and moody lighting, and I just didn't like the way the JPG images turned out in those low light settings. Anyway...now I'M the one who's ranting lol

You can redo anything, the question is only the price, and I bet redoing a film is likely more expensive than any wedding. And you are kidding yourself thinking another card slot buys you anything. If you need redundancy, think about the second body and lens, those are more likely to fail than a card.

I love my AX100, but I would still love to have an AX700 because of the autofocus advantage. Your frugality lesson from the past reminds me of my teacher from the film days. He had been a Vogue photographer in London and Paris. He was adamant about getting it right in camera. He would say that if you need to spend more than ten seconds on an image in the darkroom you have failed. He only had three rules: One - lighting, Two - lighting, Three - lighting. Of course he did shoot polaroids as he perfected the set up before taking the shot, although it was rare for him to use more than one polaroid, and I suspect the polaroid was more for reassuring the art director than his own needs. I was the guy with the Weston Master, and soaking in everything, observing that after controlling the light, the most important thing was how he handled the model. The camera and lens was just an incidental tool. The magic happened between the light and the way he interacted with the model.

I need a second card slot for redundancy. It is not about the length of time I can record video for on one memory card, as you can higher capacity cards that will let you record for a long time and or swap cards for another one when you need more record time. In the past I used ProGrade Digital V90 cards with my Panasonic GH5 and one day I travelled over 40 miles to a mountain to record video footage there. While I was doing that, one of the only two SD cards I had with me, stopped working correctly and I lost some of the footage I needed. The other card worked fine the whole time. This is why I appreciate now using my Panasonic S5II with its dual card slots, so I can use one for backup recording and there is less chance of losing photo and video footage again if one card fails while I am using the camera.

I’m not sure why they are restricted this way but we are forced to stay with our regions’ TV frame rates. I managed to find a hack for my PAL ax53 so that 30 and 60fps are available to me and I can switch back to PAL if I need to. I personally find 30FPS nicer to watch on TV’s and monitors than 25.

Great show! Yup, shooting 100 ft spools of 16mm film in a Bolex really made one frugal. Testing Eastman stocks with the pre loaded 35mm slr cartridges from RGB, ah those were days..

I think some of the dynamic range uses may be in situations when you're running and gunning and may not have the time or convenience of setting up a shot. I see a lot of people running around shooting things on the fly. I do it too sometimes when I'm filming for work and don't have the ability to set up a shot the way I want because of the condition I'm in. In those situations, getting good dynamic range can definitely help. Yes, sometimes all it takes is a few minutes to adjust your settings/exposure to get things right. But sometimes I'm filming something on location and the nature of where I am, what I'm shooting and who I'm shooting with doesn't always lend itself for stopping and adjusting. Sometimes I have to just roll and then go back in and make adjustments. Yes, it's annoying, but having a camera with good quality dynamic range is definitely helpful. I wish I could pack the look and functionality of my C100MkII into a smaller camcorder body lol Figure out how that would work and get back to us :D

I'll listen to a Markus rant any day. I agree too. I almost always get it done in one take too. Just figure out what you want for sure, then do that. Sure sometimes you can't decide so you try a couple ways, but that's different

Two card slots will not always save you. My Gh5M2 had a card go bad during a wedding ceremony, it triggered something in the camera and stopped recording to the other card a few seconds later. I lost half the wedding. Whereas my old A6500 has never stopped recording or corrupted a file.

FDR-AX700 compared with the AX100: Faster Focus in low-light, low-contrast situations more focus points. Hot-Swappable SD Cards which allows for extended video recording while replacing cards. Never run out of memory. Menu navigation while looking through the viewfinder (not possible with the AX100), work without your glasses. Rear mounted HDMI connection... facilitates running the HDMI cable from the camera to monitor in stabilizing rig. (AX100 had that on the side) Excellent high resolution fold out screen and high-resolution EVF High Frame Rate Slow - Super Slow motion capabilities

agreed. even as a hobbyist and a stock video contributor if folks can notice how when they are watching a music video or commercial or art piece the only thing that plays is the action ,the movement. these are short clips strung together .when I take photos of my paintings I always use my video camera or point and shoot to take the pic instead of the LUMIX G-7 witch is why i bought that camera. 🤔lol i have some regrets .

@04:53 _...Now look at the colour of the AX700. Yuck! That's because they introduced high dynamic range with these cameras and it started muddying up the colours. So they were sacrificing good colour for dynamic range..._ Hi Marcus, Why does HDR give muddier colours? Don't know if it's related, but I think I noticed that on the DJI Pocket 3 too. H.264 looks nicer than H.265, the latter having muddier colours.

You sure do have a lot of fun with your cameras. 3:08 that is what I like best about my Sony CX-405 I can edit 10+ hours of the best cilps in the camera before I put them in my PC. I just ordered a Technaxx Bird Cam Feeder it may come today. I hope this works out for me and I can get the best of hours of recording into my PC. It is the only bird cam I could find that you do not need a cell-phone for. I bet you could make you own bird cam feeder. I LOVE YOU REVIEWS. i WISH i HAD YOUR TALENT TO DO THEM.

Modern equivalent might be a used SR card I guess but I’m also thinking that decent media can be very expensive also (not compared to film OC but still pricey) I shoot on mainly a mirrorless Fuji or a Blackmagic (unless a client specifies Red or Arri but this rarely happens) so I used a min or v60 SD cards or a Cfast on the BM! So, I’m frugal too, but more in the sense of battery conservation and running out of space than actual cost tbh but I total agree with your comment. I studies film & tv when SVHS was the best prosumer option with beta cam out of reach. Always entertaining. Ps. On your love of all things small, I recently got a Sony Rx100 Va. I absolutely love it ❤ always with me 🎬📸 2:37

Good lighting, yes. But at an family gathering, the quick video on holiday etc you don’t want/can’t light everything properly. I understand your point, but sometimes more dynamic range means more better! Would I personally trade it for worse colors? Probably not Thanks for your videos

The 2:nd card slot depends on what you are shooting. Im usually shooting live events like air-shows, then It is good to have the 2:nd slot. Especially 10 years ago when I was shooting on Panasonic P2 cards that was like 4-6Gb / card then you ran out of card quite rapidly. now on 32 GB cards, the second slot is more of a convineance, normally I run out of batteries before running out of memmorycard.

@@MarkusPix I still hang on to my HVX200 but now day it is more to be used as a prop. It was my first "professional" camera, but with hind sight I should have waited a few years until the AG-AF101E came down in prize so I could afford it. Interchangeable lenses makes the hobby so much more interesting, and the micro four thirds let you experiment so much since like everything can be adapted to that format.

Unfortunatly the AX100 loses face tracking when you leave Auto WB. Do you leave it in Auto WB or just deal with the non face tracking AF and use Custom WB? I LOVE THE COLOR ON THE AX100!!

I learned to shoot on film and it’s frustrating filming with people who just let the camera roll and don’t plan. I see it a lot in asking the talent to do several takes in different ways to the point of exhaustion just so it can all be directed in editing. Or the directive, “just go shoot some b-roll.” With today’s new tech and planning, the workday could be significantly shortened.
