As an actor player my party was very surprised when in of the sessions I wanted to try something new, so I didn't pick a bard, but instead I made a Lizardfolk warlock named Larry, they all thought it was gonna be a very generic warlock of demon or something like that, turns out he was Warlock of the Celestial pact, that has a patron that guides him to do good things, but as a Lizardfolk he doesn't know what good things are, so when he sees somebody in struggle he really doesn't know wherever heal them or eat them, so basically because of my DM that is an actor everybody laughs a lot with my character and my patron interactions Best quote from my patron: "You are a Lizard Larry" I love dnd

When I play him in character he's just a mellow guy who's easily distracted by shiny things or wandering off if he sees something fun. Rogue: "Ok, Bard, you listen at the north door, I'll listen at the south one. We'll meet back here and report what we can hear." Bard: "You got it." Rogue: [moments later] I turn to Bard and ask- DM: He's gone. Rogue: Come again? DM: He's gone and the door to the north is open. Rogue: What? DM: You see the Bard in the room to the north. He is sitting at a table with three bandits. He is playing dice with them. Rogue: He's playing dice with the guys we're here to kill?! Bard: The DM told me my character heard them playing dice. Ah players thinking there is something huge to something tiny is freaking hillarious. I had one player who found out a few people had disapeared from different houses. He found a teleportation cirklet and could tell that whoever was in there had suddenly disappeared. It was one of the lords. He later found all of the lord's men, waitresses and guards dead behind a fake wall in the basement. Now it is kinda obvious what happened right? He was kidnapped and everyone else were killed..the thing was..for some reason he was never able to put two and two together and guess that being able to teleport from one location to another would also make you able to teleport back the other way around.. So he started believing the whole city was actually infiltrated by these people and that it was a huge plot that involved all the guards and even the other Lords since they hadn't seen anything. He investigated it for days before he finally saw someone teleport in then grab something and teleport out again before he just went "O..ohh..right..." It was fucking hillarious.

@@thefracturedbutwhole5475 Yes, I do disallow it, and it works. If someone considers that lame, that's ok. Everybody is free to not join the table. That's the reason I say it during session zero. This was also in reply to 3.14 Dragon, who mentioned "issues with player killing", and it is a perfectly viable alternative, just like the one you presented. TBH I must say, In my experience as a player and GM/DM, I am yet to find anyone who would have fun in getting a PC killed by another. Even when we were teenage newbs, testing the possibilities of an RPG, and PVP'ing whenever we had the slightest chance, killing each other would result in frustration and in-and-out of character drama. Thing is, if you kill a PC in a session, don't be surprised if someone accuses you of being a d1ck.

The problem with a lot of "actors" in this sense is that they're not actually actors and therefore play super one dimensional characters believing them to be filled with depth just because they made some elaborate backstory but they never actually stop to think of the small things like, what the character finds funny, their favourite foods, drink, pastimes etc. that give you more of an idea of who the character actually is and how you should play them than "My entire family was once killed by Orcs so now I hate Orcs." Just like with the Devout Paladin example. Devout Paladin is perfectly fine. What people fail to understand in playing them is that if your god or your order believes something, even if it's not true, then you may end up doing bad things but believe them to be good. This is where alignment fucks up everything in D&D and makes literally no sense. Your order might think all Tieflings are devil spawn and abominations against nature. Therefore you, an otherwise Lawful Good Paladin, might kill them without any qualms because you believe they are evil and think you are doing good even though they're completely innocent, normal people like everyone else deep down. That's how real life actually works. Very few people do evil things for the sake of being evil. The problem with the Actor type is as I said, they actually can't act well and really put themselves in that person's shoes. They just have one dimensional ideas of how the character should act and therefore their responses to situations in-game are usually super over the top caricatures of how someone would actually act. They won't just be disgusted by Necromancy, they'll be like "If you use necromancy I'll have to kill you, it's what my character would do," but in reality it's not because if they did it, they'd have 2 or 3 other party members to fight then. People aren't generally idiots when it comes to stuff like that. Being Good does not mean you can't do bad things. Believing in redemption doesn't mean you try to save literally every monster and npc you encounter. Same goes for Rogues. "My role is to steal stuff, I steal stuff." And that's were the acting ends. It's just a one dimensional, shallow representation of some base trait. So they'll make out like their character would always try to steal and always be stealing everything in every store or from every npc etc. That's not how a real master thief operates. They're generally a lot smarter and more subtle than that. Pick their targets carefully. Run long cons etc. So the actual problem with the Actor type is often that they're not good at acting and just play silly, over the top caricatures that take everything literally and don't allow for any sense of nuance or change in their character as they play. It's a "My character is like this or believes this and that's final" outlook believing that that is good roleplaying when it's in fact the exact opposite. People change over time. Their views change through experience and exposure to the people that surround them.

This. An actor who knows how to create a good character is a fantastic asset to most games. One who doesn't is nothing short of frustrating.
@flinfake5 жыл бұрын
The conversation on alignment begins with a definition of what the axis mean within the context of D&D and your table. My definition is that evil is something which is harmful or undesirable. Good is something that is beneficial or desirable. Order is a generalist mindset. Chaos is a situational mindset. The paladin in your example committed an obviously evil act by deciding to kill as a method of problem resolution. This would be true regardless of who or what the paladin killed. Many people who fight for good causes irl kill for a greater good while still recognizing that by doing so they are committing an evil act. Killing Hitler does not get you good karma points, objectively speaking, as you are just purging evil, using evil methods, not doing good. You don't get to decide the morality of your actions based upon the results, it is decided by their inherent merit. If you are unwilling to sufficiently define alignment of course it won't make sense.

You play with shitty people
@Jhakaro4 жыл бұрын
@@flinfake there's no such thing as good or evil in the universe. It doesn't care one way or the other. Things are only made so by how we humans perceive them to be. In the past, eating meat on a Friday was a full on sin and could send you to hell according to the church. Now nobody gives a shit. If a paladin is good aligned and his entire order sees tieflings as the spawn of devils sent to earth to do their bidding, spawned by unholy deeds then of course that lawful good paladin will murder tieflings without much thought whilst also still technically fitting to be lawful good because what they're doing is considered good by them and perhaps by the greater world. Hence why I say alignment is dumb and messes things up because in dnd it's a factual thing that exists, not up for debate but yet it still is up for debate depending on the DM and players in question. If someone does a bad thing for a good cause but that thing is still bad as you say then no character in dnd should ever be of a good alignment as they murder countless creatures. Whether it's justified is all down to individual perception but in dnd it's not, it's supposed to be cut and dry except it isn't and we keep going in circles.

I'm an actor but I've found ways around some of my flaws. For example, as an actor I often love to try to talking before fighting. Sometimes this doesn't work out because my party members hate it. So I always work my characters so that their personality can be shown in combat too. Like my paladin I played recently, even though he often tried to talk out conflicts beforehand sometimes the barbarian would NOT be into that. So we came up with a system, I would always say a prayer to my goddess before killing. Occasionally I wouldn't even fight at all, during the battle I would just kneel and pray for forgiveness to my goddess. And as the game progressed this happened less and less because my paladin grew to trust his party members as much as his god. Later in the game he murdered someone in cold blood, not something he was supposed to be doing. He actually REFUSED to apologize to his goddess and stood up for his friends and party members choices as well as his own. He told the goddess quote "take me or leave me." She respected this honesty and loyalty so much that she bestowed a blessing on the ENTIRE PARTY! What I'm trying to say to my fellow actors, combat is: 1) combat is important and it CAN be filled with amazing roleplaying 2) don't kill your party members, find some other type of outlet (unless the player and DM have okayed it) 3) let your character grow and change with circumstance. Seriously, dnd is about making a living breathing world so don't let your character become static. 👍

I'm an Actor, I play d&d to play a character. I come up with a character concept, and I try and make a d&d sheet out of it. And I get pissed off by characters that don't take roleplaying seriously (I can't describe it, it's like you have 1 quirk but no personality and your choices are actually the player's decision, not the character's knowledge), though I won't say anything, it's more of a pet peeve. Edit: JESUS FOOP!!! 30 LIKES, THAT'S THE MOST LIKES I HAVE.

I love actor role player they give me so much happiness in dnd, i see dnd as characters developing, epic moments of granger and story telling with each person having a unique backstory and unique choices so having a actor is the best thing. So as a dm i thank you guys for being actors because you make this game more fun.

2:17 I had literally got the same guy who continually doesn't let us pass through a passageway through a mausoleum. It got to a point that he even argued with the DM, so the guy beside me talked to me about kicking him out of the play but in-story. My party just ended up turning against him then just killing him with a well-placed poisoned dart to the head.

I'm kinda in a group of actors, I get real into character (to the point where I concerned my DM because he thought I was really mad when I was roleplaying mad) and when we started we debated, are we an rp group? It was a back and forth but after some time and getting more comfortable at the table (this group is a mine and most of the others first game) and after going multiple strings of sessions without combat with lots of rp and plot development we finally accepted that we're kinda a group of actor players.

I fit into the actor area well, I've been in a play and want to be more, my first character was a paladin named Nathani, I do what I can not to be a toxic player, and the rest of my party loves him. they've told me out of game that they love my character and role-play.

I like having actors and storytellers on when DM-ing. As long as theyre good to their fellow players you can be as in-character and intrigued in the details as you want. As long as youre not wasting time, then the shopkeeper himself might interrupt you speaking to his assistant and get on with it

This whole paladin skit reminded my of my Techpriest character from our long-running Dark Heresy campaign. He was the only one in the party that didn't have any corruption. When the final boss came up to the team in order to barter with them, and the rest of the team played along for time, my character just attacked the boss because negotiation was out of the question.

I made a pretty interesting Paladin character. Itwas a warforged that was a Paladin of the Crown that devoted itself to whoever it served, following there ideals and trying to become a good friend of it's master
@greyscaleadaven5 жыл бұрын
I fit this archetype best out of all the ones discussed, but here's the thing. I often break character unless there is a roleplaying moment to have (If I'm just describing what I do, I don't see the point of doing that in character, but I'll sometimes mix the two to keep things flavorful). I don't try to be the center of attention, even as a bard (My characters are in depth and have pages of backstory, so I usually have some more flavor then your average bloke when describing what my character does, but I try to hold back for the sake of having fun). Honestly, I feel more like a storyteller, but with more flare and without all the bs that some people restrict themselves with. Following oaths, alignments, and pacts to a tee just makes a character boring and one dimensional. Try thinking like your character but through a grey morality lens instead of a "This is how it is" lens. That way of approaching being an Actor opens things up a lot, and that's honestly what the goal of DnD is. The game is not scripted, it's mainly focused on improvisation and roleplay, based upon a more open ended system with guidelines to help both DMs and players understand what they're doing. If these players were real actors, they'd know how to improvise and say "Yes, and" instead of restricting the situation.

As someone who really likes to get into RPing during tabletop games I just wanted to give some quick advice. One big thing to keep in mind if your The Actor: Make sure that you don't cut down another player's fun. It's great that you want to be heavily invested in your character and the DM's world, but make sure you give the rest of the party time to shine. Don't overtake the spotlight on someone else's moment. You can defiantly help assist in that player's moment and help make the event feel really memorable, but don't overtake it. Not everything is gonna be about your character and that's ok. Also, it's important to understand the type of party/players your playing with. If you want to make a super rough, angsty rogue that's confrontation with others double check with the party and DM to see if they feel comfortable rping with that type of character or if it would even be a good fit for the party. Same goes for if you want to make a righteous, law full good paladin in a heavily evil campaign. It's better to be polite and cautious as a player than just rushing in and not paying heed to the other players/party your collaborating with. Finally, if your interested in making bold character decisions then you need to make sure that everyone at the table understands that whatever you do isn't personal, especially if your playing with your close friends. Don't take this as an excuse to be a dick 24/7. This is more to make sure no one personally gets hurt in the role play experience and that relationships aren't damaged in the long term. Communication and tabletop etiquette are key, especially in RP situations like D&D. So, it's always important to talk and establish role boundaries before hand. If something goes wrong in the RP or if the player doesn't look ok after an event then you need to stop, back out of the game, and talk about it. If you can't talk about it immediately then wait until the gMe is over and discuss it in private as soon as you can. You don't want negative feelings like that to be bottled up and linger in the game. That's the kind of thing that can build up over time and destroy role playing groups. Other than that have fun with your character! It can be really fun to get really invested in your character and rest of the world around them. Just make sure your being safe and considerate along the way.

I very definitely an actor-type, luckily basically everyone at our table is :). I basically made one of the other characters get in a house of redemption of Sarenrae (which effectively put that character out of action) and he was totally cool with it (after all that player is an actor-type too). That happened after he (while he did it and was the main instigator for us getting there in the first place, we all got there so it was sort of we, not really he) accidentally woke up an ancient dracolitch while we are 6th level... The dracolitch murdered one of the largest towns in the world and I basically told one of the most powerful wizards (I knew he was insanely powerful, just an hour before that he polymorphed into a fucking dragon to stop the dracolitch) and part of the council of the republic we were in that we awoke him. Yeah he didn't like that so we got a trial and it was all insanely awesome. Suggestion: if you are an actor type, play with other actors (preferably the DM as well), and it will be the best game ever! Edit: And yes I am a bard, of course, I am a bard. A half-elf lore bard with a 1 level dip in knowledge cleric for pure roleplay reasons (I basically became the head priest of a religion that effectively died outside of very few basically immortal beings, that we happened to meet). That's also why I told, I'm a cleric of Oghma (very heavily modified for our homebrew world) and he's all about the truth in everything, so he told them the truth because he felt he had to. Also, most of our sessions are like 5 hours of roleplay and maybe 1 half an hour combat, if any at all. I wouldn't be surprised if I literally made more persuasion and performance checks than any other type of roll in the game combined. Of course my bard has expertise in both :).

As a real life improv actor I take offense to this .lol all joking aside, I think im the type of "actor" that really gets into my role tho I don't actively trying and steal the spotlight, I just tend to get into situations where the center of attention comes to me. Due to playing odd and sometimes stupid fish out of water characters
@The_Joemance4 жыл бұрын
@@countsnowyofgwainn3996 as an improv student, I'm in the same boat. I actively try not to overshadow anybody, but a few of my parties actively try to have me be the one to interact with NPCs, or push my characters' buttons. One of our most enjoyable sessions was when our rogue was disguised as a member of my Paladin's order, trying to get me to go into a forest with no weapons nor armor. He rolled amazingly high deception, so I yes anded it to the point where I got into an argument with another party member that was trying to convince my Pally that the situation was suspicious.

Not only was I a newbie but also an actor and my DM knew it. , I played a fighter and drunken soldier, DM threw a Lady of the evening at me, turned out to be a vampire, rest of the party is waiting for me to go into combat. my thoughts, he is a soldier and he did pay his gold. rest of the players said good by, nice knowing you. DM says you wake up with 2 puncture wounds in your neck, minus 10 hit points and half your gold isgone. I asked did he have a good time ? DM said role for it . I critted. Rest of the players thought I was crazy. DM had me tagged by the vampire hooker, she became a spy, I was her mark. instead of trying to kill her for following me, I seduced her to the good guys side. She helped us win the campaign. Acting !!! Thank You !!!

I had a bout of non-lethal pvp, which worked great. A party member was not very descreet about a murder, so I and another player beet them to about half health and bound them. We solved it, and this worked great. Our logic was that we were both lawful, so going full vigilante wasn't really in character, but we wouldn't just sit back and ignore the crime

Made my party's stay in the city a little bit nicer. xD

I am an actor, and my party seems to love it actually since we are all actors. We are always more involved with roleplaying than combat. It's the way we love to experience the game. I do agree on the fact you have good actors and just.. annoying ones. Have experience with those too and oh boy did it a actually make me consider not acting anymore in games for a little while.
