Explorers are some of my favorite players, because every time they ask me something like "Who lives here?" or "What's this plant for?" I respond with "Why don't you find out? Knock on the door and ask!" and then I have excellent social hijinks that may or may not end with that player in a Hag's Hut with little to no means of escape. OR I tell them "You're not sure, you haven't seen that plant before, but you feel like you've seen something like it; roll Nature to see if you can remember and deduce the plant's uses through guesswork." and then the number they roll literally just ... gives me ideas for what the plant does. If they roll a 10, they aren't sure what it does. 15? It seems edible, probably useful for brewing some potion, but beyond that you aren't sure. They rolled a 20? *This is the Novruus Leaf, it's a primary component for Potions of Jumping, but you'd need two other ingredients to make it. One of those is the component of the Jump spell, the other can usually be found nearby - dandelions, and many of them.* I literally thought of all that on the spot, and could have done so in the time it took my player to roll and give me their result! Sure, it takes practice, and may result in a little wait time for the players while you figure out the kinks, but it makes for a fun, more interesting session overall imo

One type of player that i've never seen anyone talk about is the engineer. While most explorers seek to explore the world the engineer will usually explore crafting and game mechanics, just because it's interesting. Many times misunderstood as a rules lawyer or a min-maxer the engineer will try to find the limits and possible boundries of his respective field (e.g. alchemy, smithing, enchanting, etc...). This has some of the same problems as the explorer, as the GM will probably be overwhelmed, because he will never have read the crafting rules as exactly or crafted theories around it than the engineer. The added problem is that engineers have a tendency to become utterly broken if the GM doesn't realize the engineer as such, and as a result the engineer is either useles or a dispenser of limitless wealth and artifacts so powerful that they may be able to slay god. The trick with engineers is giving them riddles of sorts where they (just like the explorer) have to apply their skills in a new setting or enviroment. Like for example an alchemist specalized in potions has to aid a smith in creating a magical metal to forge a legendary sword, the engineer has to apply his specialization in a new enviroment and explore the options therein.

Oh, I like that you came up with this player type. I've often considered making a "secondary class" thing. (D&D 5e, for context.) Secondary classes would work pretty much just like regular classes, but they wouldn't _technically be_ classes. They'd be levelled-up and such _parallel_ to classes. Anyway, I was always considering making a "chef" secondary class, that'd fit the engineer player type perfectly. You'd put together a few ingredients, maybe spices, and the meal would give the party temporary bonuses depending on the quality of your meal, the categories of your ingredients (meat, veggies, etc.), any special ingredients (dragon meat, hell yeah), and such. Other potential engineer player style "secondary classes" could be alchemy, smithing, and enchanting, like you mentioned. It doesn't even have to be limited to "crafting," although I'm too tired to think of any good examples.

You gotta do a "Know your Player: The Social Gather" These people play D&D mostly as an excuse to get together to hang out, have coffee & cake, and gossip. They may not ever really understand the game mechanics because learning the game isn't really a priority to the Social Gather. Keep in mind, there isn't anything wrong with such players, they can be easy to please if given the right environment (having food/drinks and plenty of smoke breaks may go a long way with such players) but these players may not be as committed to the campaign as others might.

Keep in mind, I don't think that the "Social Gather" people are bad players, in fact most of these players are super-chill and could be a lot of fun to be around. D&D by it's very nature is a "social gathering" activity and playing without snacks/drinks is just wrong to me. My only problem I have with such players is that some may not be as committed to the campaign. They may spend much of the session gossiping, complaining about work and such or canceling meet-ups altogether.

The entire group I DM are explorers! I've ended up doing the "go round the table" method for downtime. The Sorcerer built an spy network, the Rogue goes on dates with multiple high-level NPCs trying to gain favours or secret information for the party, the Fighter set up a hospital to combat the plague raging throughout the city and the Bard had a different "get-rich-quick" scheme each week which led to him starting a rat circus, a detective agency and a drug dealing empire. It can be tough to balance it out so that everyone feels included and to stop people getting fidgety when they aren't in the spotlight (the Sorcerer especially suffers from former-DM syndrome) but the sort of stuff they get up to adds so much life to the game. I usually measure it out so I have a major event planned that should take about 15 minutes with each player (the Sorcerer's favourite contact's cover has been blown, the Rogue's suitors have uncovered their infidelity, the plague has adapted to resist the medicine, and the Bard... he normally just grabs his sidekick and they go out half-cocked looking for platinum), so they all get equal amount in the first hour and then go round the table asking if people have more they want to do. Sometimes it can take an entire session to get through all the things but the group all seem to love it as much as combat and adventuring, so I reckon as long as everyone is enjoying themselves there's nothing wrong with that. However, I'd also point out that I'm very lucky with my players. This sort of thing really demands for your players to be the sort that are bursting with ideas about things to get up to. If they are the sort to slide into the background and not get involved then it could be rough.

a suggestion: to actually experience this sort of game, play a campaign where a constant time crunch isnt present. Where exploration is actually in the narrative. my personal favorite I ever ran was a pseudo monster hunter sort of game, where the party were hired onto a Royal Society type expedition as guides and muscle for the hapless nerds looking to publish their next book about monstrosities in a new, primordial continent.

One game the party got to a point where it was clearly a "you've finished for today, continue tomorrow" part of the game. So we all did. We all went home to sleep. All but one person who decided to become an explorer. So he breaks into a mansion, hide in a box of onions until everyone has gone to bed, sneak into the basement, explore *the whole goddamn place* and solve most of the scenario in one sequence of lucky stealth rolls.

My group is actually made up of a bunch of "explorers" and our GM has practically a photographic memory and spends most of his free time developing campaigns for after we finish the current campaign, so by the time we get to them they are in fact filled to the brim with secrets/treasures/death for us to just happen upon and discover. And each of our campaigns have lasted a few years while playing once per week, so it's not like we run through them or anything lol But yeah, honestly being able to play in a campaign where we can just discover and essentially LIVE in these fantasy worlds without constantly being dragged into end-of-the-world scenarios that keep us running forward without any time to enjoy yourselves and explore character development with fun RP...... I consider myself lucky to be part of such a "slow moving" group as some of my other friends have called it lol

I think exploration is an underrated part of dnd. Sure, as you said, you won't find magic items in a random forest, but why not reward the players with other things. Specifically crafting materials. The ranger has a woodworking kit? Reward that 18 in nature with a cool type of wood that can be carved into a bow with an extra 100 feet of range. Did the forge cleric with a proficiency in smiths tools roll a high perception check in a deep, dreary cave? Perhaps she found some strange, magical ore that, when forged into a suit of armour grants her resistance to fire damage. It's easy enough to come up with on the spot, plus you could easily assemble tables of materials and ingredients outside of gametime using a bit of creative thinking and a couple random name generators. Maybe the wood from earlier is this deep gray, and glows under tension and the metal has an iridescent blue and red sheen. Plus, I think it'd give a way cooler feeling for the players since you put the responsibility of forging these materials into something useful in their hands, making the items they craft feel way cooler. Allow the players to describe how they decorate their own weapons and armour. Is the paladins greatsword strictly utilitarian, or does he spend hours carefully carving intricate patterns and pictures into the blade? Let the players make these items personal. Provide opportunities for these to be enchanted down the line as well. Maybe an old mysterious ruin has an ancient shrine that, when a weapon is laid upon it and the right incantation is muttered, the weapon is enhanced. Go wild with it, the sky is the limit.

My D&D campaign travel essentially has a roll for day encounter, then they can push themselves to travel half distance at night and have a high chance of encounter (if they wanna be risky or rush) or they camp and have a lower encounter chance. It's Not perfect, but the travel has a distinct feel to it. I do give them time off though and we've had some hilarious reactions from that. When you think an explorer is getting too obnoxious, don't forget that one of the reasons to be an adventurer is the desire to know new things and know new places. A paladin would be just a town guard if he didn't like to give light to new people. A rogue would just be a robber if he didn't liked to challenge himself with progressively bigger heists. A mage would just be a professor if he didn't wanted to test his powers under different circumstances. Sometimes, mindless wandering with your friends is a better reward than a beholder carcass

Barbarian here. Got into a solo encounter with two armored golems, one with a pike and the other a poleaxe. Thw other party members knew of this in-game, but OOC didn't like me and thus decided to try and kill me off numerous times prior. That time and all following, they got the DM to cooperate. Joke's on them tho', both golems died in spite of constant flanking and their attacks inflicting on me some sort of status that halved my walk and sprint speeds. Basically, DM tried to force a kill via flanking and cutting my ability to flee while the party watched and waited to loot my shit. And after that, they decided to get my character arrested for looting the golems of their gold-plate helmets, one of which had been flattened. My character was chased and tased (*YES, TASED WITH MODERN TASERS.*) by FIVE elves at once. ALL hit their marks. I asked for public rolls due to the obviously broken nature of this, but still expected to get screwed over. I made ALL rolls but one. The roll to beat was 14. ONE taser roll save was ebough to knock my character unconscious, due to having only a few hit points left after the brutally unfair solo encounter. And then my party tried to testify against my character in a courtroom, logic and evidence be damned. All items were circumstantial and my character's backstory allowed me to easily throw off any lingering claims by pointing out the remaining evidence was almost definitely a forgery by their sibling, a crime lord with strong connections to numerous organizations and legal fronts. Eventually the DM and players ran out of excuses, player tried to submit a forged document of ADMISSION OF GUILT and play it off as something my character had written. The character that was vehement in their legal defense and innocence. And this document was never declared, only brought up late into the court hearing. DM and players flat out told me they wanted me gone when all this failed. Wished they would have just said so. Wasted my time for far too long.

As a mechanical engineer, with an physics student and a electronic engineer in our player group as well, I put forth the "Engineer" as a player type. They are the one that will ask which direction the grain of the wood the door is made of is going, or go through the exact calculations of horse/fodder/cart balance to get the party from point A to B. While they might seem like pointless question to most people, when they use a utility spell in an extremely creative but still within the rules way it is all worth it. As long as they moderate their questions and desire for exact detail so as to not derail the game.

I'd say, reward the exploration. Some of the party likes exploring, some like fighting? Cool, why not do both. And don't just roll up some random encounter on a table, create a whole mini-quest they could stumble upon whilst moving around the world and looking. Just make it a small self-contained distraction that could get them a little loot and isn't very long and the explorer will feel like they found something cool and the rest of the party will have their combat.

Of course the explorer works perfectly combined with an explorer player as a DM, as that DM will delight in someone caring about their carefully crafted world.

Dude I as a DM loves the explorer, because I made super complicated maps with an ecosystem and a backstory even before the adventure starts. In my opinion, is our job to give interesting things for the players.

I LOVE explorers. Im mostly one myself, which makes being the DM exciting haha. My players just went to the Plane of Ice, i highly reccomend looking into it if your high level party likes exploration. Its a super awesome plane to wander about, as you cant really get to right where u need to be. Planeshift in to a random spot nearish to your spoken destination, roll on an creature ecounter table and a unique terrain table maybe four times a day, and you have a pretty awesome exploration game with a blend of social, combat, puzzle, and exploration :)

I'm and explorer type, I like knowing what the streets are like or finding random shit in treestumps that someone hid there. Although I tend to hold back cause I'm terrified of hogging the attention, but this video has encouraged me to do it more now. As an inexperienced new DM I've been guilty of the "you take a couple of days to travel to the town, here's a random encounter of two hill trolls" type of play cause it felt like my players didn't want to explore, but I regretted doing it and it railroaded my storyline too much and sped it up too much, I should tease more exploration out of them instead of trying to cater to the one or two players who only care about "we travel to the town to do the main quest".

I played my first dnd game at a friends b-day party a while ago, and it was kind of a cluster fuck. We all collectively decided to ignore every attempt our DM made to start the story, and went off to find Madagascar to enslave lemurs for profit.

Ahhh 3:03, reminds me of an inside joke our group has. DM: "As you lay down, nearly sound asleep, you hear pitter-patters on the ground then silence. You widen your eyes, and in your peripheral, you notice a glint of steel." Me: "Am I being mugged? I jolt awake and prepare casting Firebolt. I cry out: 'Square up, bitch. I know magic.'"

Our group usually will write notes to the Dm and describe what they want to do on the front and then the Dm will write what happened on the back. This will mostly just happen in towns, bit thinking about it know it could really work just bout anywhere. We use it because not only does it speed up the game (we usually got like 5 people, so if each of them took up 10 minutes that's about 50 minutes of game time d e l e t, so, y'know) but it can also give your character some secrecy. There's probably ways to streamline it but it works for our group

Seems to me that if you have a party with known explorers in it, that sandbox campaigns might be the better option rather than some specific, "Ok, go kill the dark demon lord gorgonoplex and his armies." campaign. Let em roam, randomly put events into play as they do. Not every party has to be assembled to save the world. Maybe this is just a group of adventurers out to get rich and famous doing whatever quests they can stumble over. "Hey look! You wandered a day off the road and stumbled over the permanent encampment of a large group of bandits! They are situated around a cave. You wanna see whats in there? Gotta clear out the bad guys first."

I remember early on in a campaign with my friends about 10 minutes into the campaign I was exploring and got jumped by a swarm of spiders and died and failed my saving rolls. My DM being a nice guy allowed me to be "revived" (I was a mage) and I've always hated going first now.

Damn, I just realized that I'm the explorer of our group. I always ask for details about what we can see. Although my DM loves me for it, because I am usually the one who notices them throwing out hooks to try and get us to do something he's prepared, while the rest of the party is just...."we gotta do this and then this and this, we can't deviate whatsoever."
