I learned "lo que" very simply. It's the non-question "what".

Another great lesson. I've have native speaking Spanish tutors and friends to converse with. I though a native speaker would be the best way to learn. But native speakers rarely know hot to explain grammar and language concepts to no-natives like someone who's gone through the process of learning the language. Natives often times take this things for granted, or don't know how to explain the reasons for saying things a certain way to native English speakers like another English speaker. I learn tons from your video even after a couple years of learning and practice under my belt. Thanks and keep up the good work!

I agree. I think you get something different from native and non-native speakers. My wife is a native speaker and she can tell me what sounds correct and help me with pronunciation but she can't tell me why something is the way it is in Spanish or share tips on how to create grammatically correct sentences. I suppose that's why I don't teach English. I really wouldn't have any tips to share...lol.

I have long believed that the best teachers are those people who, at one time, struggled with a particular subject and overcame it. And are then very articulate, patient and able to describe the learning process to others. Keep up the great work. And, because I've heard you mentioned it before, don't feel that you will isolate your beginner students by getting into more intermediate and advanced stuff. Your teaching style is very rare and you could do excellent work at bridging the Gap between beginning, intermediate and advanced. None of these groups of individuals will feel abandoned or betrayed, they will feel grateful to have a bridge to the next level.

It helped me to think of the 'lo' in 'lo que' as meaning 'the thing'. - 'Lo que' = 'the thing that'. - 'Lo que más quiero es una amiga' = 'the thing that I most want is a friend'. - 'Lo que menos me gusta es la comida picante' = 'the thing I like least is spicy food'. Of course, you could just think of 'lo que' in these examples as meaning 'what', but this meaning of 'lo' can be extended to other use cases: - 'Lo útil' = 'the useful thing'. - 'Lo mas sensato seria volver a casa' = 'the simplest thing would be to go home'.

Hi there. I have been trying to teach myself Spanish for about 2 years - not very consistently - and a few months ago took a class. I was given a placement test and was deemed on the cusp of advanced and intermediate. Perhaps it’s because I have been exposed to Spanish since I was a kid and many words and phrases are familiar to me, but to this day I find it difficult to string sentences together. My comprehension is far better than my verbal skills. After watching some of your classes, I learned that what I need to work on is the speed of my command of the language (sort of like increasing the RAM of my computer) - and your plug-in technique, I think, is very effective. Your “Lo que,” “Avísame,” “En cuanto a…” etc. is the key to accessing the stash of vocabulary and phrases I learned or memorized. The exercises I believe are most helpful. Thank you!

You can think of lo que as "that which" or "the thing that" for example: Tu sabes lo que quieres. You know that which I want or you know the thing that I want.

Let me first say thank you for teaching this lesson so clearly and directly. I stopped my (self taught) language learning years ago and this was the most difficult question for the native Latino speakers I met to answer for me.
