Power in scientific terms is the rate of change. So when someone is powerful they can change things in an instant

Stopped at 7:46. 65 year old retired businessman inspired by Machiavelli and Locke here. Power is to me skillful effectiveness in controlling others. Knowledge can and must then be acquired through that control. Knowledge without power= philosophy. Power without knowledge = stagnation. Power + knowledge = advancement. Am I wrong?

Interesting discussion. I've been pondering myself lately on the nature of power after reading some stuff on Nietzsche. And I see power as one of the three different spectrums that comes from the same crystal. The other two spectrums are Control and Might. Might, which is what Nietzsche really was talking about (Will to Power is a mistranslation. Will to Might is closer to the german word Macht (Der Wille zur Macht) than Power is, which is closer in translation to the word Kraft. Meaning power or force) is power with control. You can have power in the sense of strenght or ability to change (as "The Real Legend" pointed out: "Power in scientific terms is the rate of change. So when someone is powerful they can change things in an instant"). And, as a comic book nerd, I think of powers in terms of superpowers a lot. But if you have power without control you don't have might. Like Cyclops from X-Men. He can't shut off his eyebeams. He's got great powers, but little control. Ergo. Power, but not might. If you have, say political power, and are afraid of losing it, than do you really have power? You lack control over the power and you want more control. In fact, and I've talked to both marketing people and psychologist about this: control is the most fundamental need people have. More so than sex. So, the way I interpreted "Knowledge is power" is that Knowledge gives you power. If you know what to do and how to change your situation you are powerful. Say for example that I get into a fight. The guy is bigger and stronger than me but I know martial arts and pressure points. My knowledge makes me more powerful than his brute power. Giving me might. Once again, quoting a psychologist: "All phobias are based in one thing: Losing control." Knowledge allows you to seize control again. Knowledge conquers fear. Just wanted to throw out some of the things I've been thinking about the nature of power and the nature of knowledge. But I never pitted them against each other like in this debate because like Bacon said and the way I interpreted it: Knowledge is power. To me that was like pitting "man against nature" since man is part of nature, not above it. We can not conquer nature but should instead find a balance with it. So this was very interesting in that it gave me new spectrums of knowledge to play with. New data to build off of. It's true what they say: You never stop learning.

You need power to do the things you have knowledge of. Knowing how to get to space is different than having the materials and workforce to get there.

I would say that the basis f the knowledge and discussion is based on the already present notions of the people in that room, of being a consumer and wanting stuff. I would also assert that this discussion would be more beneficial if people were going to school to primarily better themselves and gain knowledge for the areas in their lives they enjoy. While you may call this semantics I would call the distinction to be correlation to the enjoyment and thus mastery of their given trade. However I would love to have this discussion, and find out for myself the truth of the assumptions I have made.

wow awesome lecture! for those who cant afford schooling and are seemingly "powerless" in the western society due to the idea of social job rankings, you make me feel powerful by feeding me food for thought! Not saying however, that education is ever a bad thing, there are two sides to every coin and every coin needs both sides to be a functioning object.

You as a child want to reach something so you teach yourself how to stand, thus getting the power to stand . later on you want to walk, hopefully with help and encouragement from your parents you gain the power to walk. and this dance goes on and on untill you think you have and/or know everything you need.. Knowledge and Power may be 2 distinct things but also to sides of the same coin.. have fun poking hole in that :)

Knowledge is Power. If you remove all of a king's power, he still retains the knowledge which he used to become king, the knowledge he gained during his rule, or a combination of both. Therefore he is not really powerless, as he could use this knowledge to gain back his prior complete power as king. On the other hand, if you remove a king's knowledge, he is totally powerless, as he would be unable to make the necessary decisions required to maintain order within his kingdom and either said kingdom would fall to some hostile outside force or the king himself would fall to internal plotting by enterprising forces seeking the king's power, either for personal gain or to save the kingdom from ruin.

Josh Stewart Actually, it was rockets that took people to the moon. It was all driven by powerful people trying to increase their power in order to intimidate. Plan B was to be less subtle and just Nuke the moon. They probably would have, if they didn't believe they could take people into space(which the Soviets had demonstrated was plausible by taking Sputnik up). It was all fundamentally about rocket technology. The rockets were developed as a demonstration of US power in response to fear of Soviet power. Being able to take objects or creatures into space implied capability for military staging from space. That's something that had never been dealt with, and the demonstration of Soviet ICBMs being used to take stuff into orbit very clearly showed that they could plant whatever they wanted, wherever they wanted it. The idea that they could and the US couldn't wasn't about to be tolerated. Ultimately, the US was more successful because it had more power to begin with. With the USSR gone, and no one else competing on that frontier, US interest and activity has plummeted. Had things panned out differently, we'd have people on Mars, already. No joke.

does knowledge have to be associated with power or vice versa? because, i would choose only knowledge because, because we have an infinite capacity for knowledge, but a limited amount of power. no one can take my knowledge away from me, while in a single second, one can blow up my troops. unless, your memory got removed from your brain. or how do you interpret power? the term power means direct influence on someone else, you could do so inadvertently with you wealth of knowledge, which gains you that unintended modest power. or, someone could see your knowledge as stupidity, and render you powerless. I dont know just kinda all over the place im also just mid way through this lesson but do find it intereseting

Ignorance is a bliss, up until someone takes advantage of your ignorance and fuck you over. I'm a bit worried for that student. I hope he said it just to give another perspective and not because that's who he is. :/ Also Knowledge can bring Power, but Power can bring knoledgw which can bring more power (like a cycle). An example would be a video on this channel about Peter the Great, who got power, went to Amsterdam (hehehe) and got knowledge on ship-building and European lifestyle. He then returned to Russia with what he had learned and set the bases to turn the country into a "powerhouse" (if he already hadn't by the time of his death).
