Imagine a room of skilled experts at R&D developers discussing new products for the company's upcoming catalog. Each one is repeating the other's thoughts, nodding in accord and agreeing on everything. This may seem like a perfect business meeting, but a limited pool of opinions can limit innovation. A great leader understands that more than just ability is required to develop creativity. It's about assembling a varied group of thinkers, laying the groundwork for innovation, and ensuring the team has the tools they need to express their creativity. Let's look at how leaders can make this happen. Hiring is the first step in assembling an innovative team and setting the right hiring parameters will make your candidate search more focused. While knowledge and experience are important, cognitive diversity is, too. Finding a candidate with a unique viewpoint or problem-solving technique could be essential to your project. Hiring gives insight into what your team can look like. Each candidate has their own appeal and seeing how their skills fit into the team can result in exciting combinations. Once your team is full of employees with new ideas, your next priority is making sure they have what they need to make their ideas a reality. As a creative leader, consider your part in giving your team access to the resources they need. Time is essential for employees because creative solutions don't come instantly. Giving staff freedom and time allows them to think creatively without feeling rushed. A creative leader provides support. This goes beyond just giving moral support. You can organize brainstorming sessions, allow access to mentors and provide constructive criticism. As a leader, account for creativity, training, and your employee training schedule. Some people naturally have higher levels of creativity, but it can be cultivated and developed by anyone. Providing your employees with workshops, seminars and training events may bolster a team's ability to think creatively. Sometimes an idea requires financial support, such as prototype funding or market research. Leaders can take the steps necessary to ensure that teams have reasonable access to financing. Understand your departments financial allowance and discuss standard billing procedures with your company's accounting department. A team made up of individuals with varied skills, expertise and experiences brings diversity and a strong sense of innovation. Each member provides a distinct perspective on a problem which ensures the solutions your team develops are thorough. Your duty as a leader is to build variety in your team and foster a climate where every voice is appreciated and heard. You've now completed this course on understanding creative leadership. You've explored what a creative leader is and how it fits into an organization. You now understand the importance of developing your mission and values, as well as nurturing a culture of creativity. Now that you're positioned to become a creative leader, you're better equipped to build the right team for your organization.
