Also the English took over their close neighbors (Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) or allied with them very quickly. Another massive advantage. Furthermore they were an isolated island which improved their defenses massively. Unlike the Dutch which had to fight constantly with the Spanish, French, and bisschops/ lords in modern day Germany. Where the English could easily defend their lands because of being an island the Dutch couldn't. Must I go on? There's countless of examples of how the English had it much easier.

@Lucky Not really. That analogy is quite wrong. Together with the Spanish Empire, the 16th century Portuguese Empire was basically one of the world's 2 superpowers at the time. The Treaty of Tordesillas and the Mare Clausum policy, divided the world in 2 spheres of influence between the 2 countries. Portugal and Spain were a bit like the US and the USSR during the Cold War in terms of power, influence and prestige. The only difference being that they were not political and ideological rivals/enemies unlike the US and USSR in the Cold War. Well, since I'm Belgian, during the Louis XIV campaigns in the Netherlands/Belgium (Wich was both correct denomination for the Benelux during that time) wasn't so relevant about the video itself because it was a short-time drawback for the Dutch, apart from direct impact for the dutch Limburg there's no long-term consequence for the Dutch Empire history. And Belgium's union with Netherlands was too short to talk about, and pretty complicated, and even it's because of the trying of the dutch governement of stabilizing his rule on Belgium will lead to Belgian revolts (Into the Belgian Revolution)

Valandix von Osterreich the wars with Louis XIV were the direct cause of the decline of Dutch naval power and made the Dutch lose their prominant position. The war of 1672 is called the 'rampjaar' which means disaster year as it saw the beginning of a very expensive war which was eventually won but caused huge economical problems. Then the war of Spanish Succession against Louis XIV was the definitive end of Dutch naval superiority as the war crippled the Dutch economy and fleet, ending the Dutch golden age for good and making the Dutch republic a secondary power. The wars with Louis XIV were thus essential in the fall of the dutch empire

Bonaire's history only really becomes relevant to the world due to having the world's oldest marine reserve. Before tourism, Saint Martin similarly had little influence other than being a way station between islands.

Indonesia didn't become independent in 1954. The proclamation was on 17 august 1945. After a 4 year struggle the Dutch accepted the Independence in december 1949. But the Indonesian see 1945 as their True Independence year. The Dutch saw 1949 as their True independence year. After 50 years in the "90" the Dutch government accepted 1945 too. Also Indonesia became independent under the name of United Indonesian Republik-Repoeblik Indonesia Serikat. This was in an union with the Dutch. This Union was resolved in 1954 because of the New Guinea dilemma. The area of New Guinea was under Dutch rule until 1963.

The mother of the Dutch trade doesn’t start in the Mediterranean and the Levant but in the East-sea trading wheat, rye, and other grains together with lumber. This trade was a necessity because of the ongoing deforestation in the Netherlands, and due to this deforestation and following agricultural use of land the soil subsided in such extremity that grain, wheat, rye and other foods couldn’t be tilled plentiful enough any longer. I small timeline with some time cues (like revolution of France, start of exploration of America) would be helpful to see where we are in the moment of the certain event you are describeing. Morover an analysis of the key factors that led to their downfall would be great. That way once could have an idea of that history process. And even so, Brittain's Colonial Empire was rather small untill their population growth went through the roof and greatly surpassed the aforementioned countries. By 1700 (when the British empire was even smaller than Portugal's) Portugal had 2 Million People, and the Netherlands had 1.7 Million and Brittain already had 8 Million (5M in England, 2M in Ireland, 1M in Scotland). By 1750, Portugal had just 3 Million, the Netherlands had just 5 Million and Brittain had a whopping 15 Million, and its only after this point that the Brittish Empire started to increase its size considerably. Like i said, you can't sustain a large colonial empire, without the population to do so.

And you can still find some traces that we share some history. Dankie/ Merci. A great video. Roman-Dutch Law is still the basis of Sout African Law. English Law is only Criminal, Criminal Prosedure, Company's, Cession and Representative Law. Since 1994 the South African Courts tends to follow English Law and like wise it is schooled at some (South African) Universities.

@Sunil I It wasn't, I already said it wasn't a battle, but rather a siege. The Dutch could have held out longer if they had better luck. They were unlucky that their foodsupplies were burned down by a fire because a cannonball fell into a barrel of gunpowder. Asians were only two times succesfull in capturing a dutch fort and both times the VOC forces made mistakes and were the asians lucky

You fail to mention how their was already a decline in interests in the Dutch colony in North America. We (the Dutch) weren't there to build up settlements. The primary objective was the profitable fur trade, however we couldn't really compete with the French and British control over fur trade. So interest largely declined in the area. Nest to that the colony was already becoming a burden on expanses. So agreeing on ceding Suriname to us and new Amsterdam to England was a very profitable agreement. We made a lot more profit out of the sugar production and slave trade there.

Also there was just not enough interest among the relatively very wealthy Dutch to settle there as was the original plan, a big protestant agricultural colony in the global fight against evil catholocism. But New Amsterdam was minority Dutch with people from all over Europe and the world and was religious tolerant. It was a city of hustlers and bustlers with the people not so much behind the common national cause and simply preferring to continue business under English rule over fighting the English who had to die for king and country. Suriname never returned much profit, but the food is great.

Perhaps Dejima was not mentioned in a vid about the Dutch Empire because it was never a part of the Dutch Empire. Quite the opposite. The Japanese Emperor merely offered this small, heavily guarded piece of his territory to the Dutch as a place, set apart by the Emperor, for a Dutch diplomatic mission and trade, very restricted to exclude Christian influence, as part of a strategy to EXCLUDE western culture and its influence, and it worked. It was the first western DIPLIMATUC MISSION to Japan. No colony. It was specifically set up by the Emperor to be ANYTHING BUT a part of the Dutch Empire, so it's not mentioned in the vid.

A further important year for the Dutch declining power was 'Het rampjaar' or 'the Disaster year' of 1672. In this year, the catholic King Jacobus of England conspired together with catholic France and some generals of the Holy roman empire to raid the protestant Netherlands. However the Netherlands managed to defend the sea from the Brittons, and most of the land as well (the attackers were not able to raid Amsterdam. Nevertheless the Dutch forces were exhausted. Fun fact though is that the protestant Dutch prince William of Orange III conquered London in 1688, avenging himself by killing the catholic English King and became the English king himself, by coincidence also known as William III, or king Billy for Scotland and Ireland. Being the English king, he could now also avenge France as he had more power to fight the France catholic King. Dedicating his live to fighting the catholics, he became a hero for protestants.

actually, the current Amsterdam accent was very different from the accent at that time. Just like current General American did not split from British English, but rather shared a common predecessor, the same would be true for a 'new amsterdam accent'. It wouldn't be similar to the current accent of Amsterdam at all... thank god :P

@@LodiJP It actually would be pretty similar, in this alternate scenario. Nederlands is more homogeneous than English [because the Netherlands is smaller than England]. American accent is different, because rural Englishmen from rural counties settled in America. The upper class Englishmen stayed in England, and kept their opulent/French accent. There are some rural counties in England today that could still sound almost American. Moreover, every county in England has a different accent, however the Netherlands are more centralised or unified [apart from Vlaams & Frŷsk].

Political Geography In order to have secure colonies away from home, you must have secured home first. When the homeland is threatened the colonies become less important and the homeland's defense is prioritized. The Dutch have land borders with two of the great continental land powers, the HRE and France. Any conflict between them (of which there were many), would likely involve the Dutch being between both (yes the HRE and France had a border with each other further south.) Physical Geography The main colonial competitors of the Dutch, the Spanish and the English, later British had geographical superiority when compared to that of the Dutch in terms of natural barriers and distance from the Americas. The Spanish had the advantage of the Pyrenees mountains between them and the growing French power. The British isles were separated from the continent completely by the English Channel and the North Sea. These barriers would be major obstacles for any invading army and allowed the Spanish and British to focus more on naval power. In fact focusing on naval power was now about the only useful thing for the British to spend their resources as their only land border (with Scotland) was no more as England and Scotland were under a personal union, almost doing away with the need for land forces at all. In fact Britain would need a navy in order to prevent any invasion force from landing, as the larger populations of the mainland would mean that even if the British had a ground force, it would be outmatched heavily in numbers. Contrast this with the Dutch who were surrounded pretty much on all sides. With the HRE to the East, France to the West, and England in the North across the channel, they were in a dangerous position. Constantly taking their attention from the colonies back to home in order to defend from complete annihilation by the substantially larger land armies of their neighbors the HRE and France. This never allowed them to fully focus on maintaining a large navy like Britain's though they had excellent commanders such as de Ruyter. The Iberian Peninsula and the British isles are the best places a colonial power would want to be positioned being the closest to the Americas, shortening travel time and cost of rations for the journey. (Though traveling across the Atlantic is still a dangerous and costly adventure for both those sailing and the investors, this gave a slight advantage to Britain and Spain over the other European powers in the great colonial competition. Also the Dutch to reach the Americas would have to go through the English Channel which was firmly in Royal Navy control and would be hostile water if the Dutch were ever at war with England or later Britain. (Which did stop Dutch trade and supplies from getting through, which caused the fall of New Amsterdam to the English renamed New York.) The alternative route would be to go around the British isles by the North Sea which would add more distance and further cost to the already perilous and expensive voyage. Trade, Resources, and Economy Spain and England, later Britain arguably had the best overseas empires. The Spanish had access the the mass quantities of gold and silver and tried make maximum profit by taking it all. (They ended up taking so much that it caused massive inflation, devaluing the currency and wrecking their economy. Though Spain's empire was undeniably larger in terms of size than the other powers at the time, they were reduced to a second rate power not having the same political influence as before. But this could also be because the French influence on their politics due to the Bourbon Kings.) Spain and Britain had cash crop growing islands. Britain had access to the North American East Coast which arguably was just as lucrative as the Spanish gold. In the Southern climate allowed cash crops such as cotton to be grown. The middle colonies were considered the bread basket of the colonies and grew most of the food. The New England colonies had timber which was much desired in Europe. (By this point many of the old European forests have been chopped down for farmland to feed the cities. The remaining forests were in the domains of the nobles who preserved them to use as hunting grounds. Timber would be needed to produce ships for trade and to protect that trade from pirates and privateers.) Boston became a major trading port through which the raw materials of the new world would travel to the old world and refined goods would return. Boston would also become a major shipbuilding hub. Ohio which the British disputed with the French also had many beavers which could be trapped for their furs which were rising in demand in Europe. Contrast this with the Dutch colonies which were also cash crop producing islands like those of the British, that was it. No beavers, timber, gold or silver. Conclusion Due to the dangerous neighbors and the geography which put them at a disadvantage against those neighbors, the Dutch could not attend to their overseas colonies.
