Personally, I would love to see you breakdown songs from Tool, probably starting with Lateralus, especially since you can appreciate the Fibonacci Sequence. A couple of fun facts: 1) The song was originally just named "suicide" but the record label said NO. So they CHOPPED the word and added some word play there. 2) The part where they start screaming "FATHER!". The song wasn't originally meant to be biblical but dude was having writer's block on how to end the song. He was with someone who had a huge library and the guy told Serj to pick up a random book for inspiration. Serj basically picked at random the Holy Bible and opened it to the page that has those lines and it just fit so perfectly! Source: There's an interview with Serj somewhere here on youtube that I saw quite a while ago. Side note: Where you said "Everyone is wearing black".... Yup, welcome to rock my friend, especially late 90's early 2000's rock fans.... My high school (hell and current) wardrobe proves this, lmao

Just about hit the nail on the head here Knox. According to Guitarist Daron Malakian, who wrote it with lead singer Serj Tankian, explained: "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line 'Angels deserve to die.'" (I copied this from the Songfacts page on the song, there's a lot more there.)

originally the song was called "Suicide" a take on how ones death is perceived by others pertaining to the manner of death as stated by the guitarist. The name "Choy Suey" is literally Chop Sui- Chop suicide, they parody it in the boredom of the lead singer eating Chop suey briefly. I think you’re bang on with the meaning. SOAD like to keep their songs open to interpretation, like it means whatever you feel it means. But Daron Malkavian (the creepy guitarist) talked about how people are judged differently based on how they died. Someone could be an amazing person, an angel, all their lives but if they died by suicide/drugs/lost a fight with mental health, then people will say they deserved it. “Grab a brush and put on a little makeup.” People often wear makeup and nice clothes when planning to take their life. “Why’d you leave your keys up on the table?” Seeing signs that a person isn’t planning on returning home that night.

If you dive deeper into the world of SOAD... oh man... Every single line that comes out of this man's mouth is a metaphor. They intentionally say lyrics that sound like total nonsense, but by digging deeper, there is always a meaning or a story to what is being said. It's nuts. So many interviews and each one never revealing anything because they want to leave everything open to whatever you think or feel things are lol. It's been like 25 years and never an explanation. Great reaction to a great song. System of a Down are legends because they transcend barriers and genres and yet somehow still maintain respect from hardcore metalheads. I'm not a huge metal guy myself, but SOAD are a band I love. Serj's vocals are amazing, and extremely versatile between his pseudo-rapping cadences you pointed out, to his angelic tone, to his screams, plus he'll throw in some flourishes of the folk music of their home country of Armenia. Similarly, the way their instrumentations can vary wildly between sweet melodies and chunky riffs, with extremely fast, dramatic shifts that always keep it fresh is so unique. Add on the political awareness in their lyrics and you have something truly unique and incredible.

I first heard this song (and album) in 2001 when I was a freshman in High School. A few years later I was lucky enough to see them in concert in St. Paul, MN in 2005. I say I was lucky because I got to go for free, as my friend’s mom is blind and she actually had gotten two tickets for her and one of her friends to go but he had something come up and couldn’t go with her, so she called me and asked if I would escort her to the concert, and I was happy to. It was an awesome show, of course. SoaD has always touched me because of the complex emotional sense I get from the songs. It’s like a sense of pain and strength and a call to pay attention. As a teenage boy who experienced a lot of abuse as a child it was music I could identify with. They e always had a special place in my heart. Also this song’s intro is one of the best of all time.

I’d love to see you dive more into metal. Just as a point of order, if you do official music videos/ album versions there’s a higher chance of the record label will hit the video. If putting text over the video works, I for one don’t mind that, but if it gets to be more work than it’s worth, you might want to consider checking out live performances. Just know it’s a double edged sword, though, because you’re more likely to be able to monetize the video, but sometimes the live version of songs can be completely different from the album audio

At the time of shooting this video they weren't very well known (well at least they didn't think they were). They posted a note on their website asking for fans to come along to an empty motel parking lot in, or close to their hometown to help shoot the video, only expecting maybe 500 people. 1500 people turned up, the band were in awe and this is why it has so much energy as they treated it like a live show rather than a video clip. This whole album is a masterpiece, produced by Rick Rubin. The album's title "Toxicity" is a play on "Toxic-City" and in honour of Los Angeles depicting that Hollywood isn't all glamorous. I've just recently found your channel and been watching a couple of your reactions. I can say you really have a natural talent (ans "ear") for music, not only your choosen genre. That's my fav song from SOAD and one of the first ones I ever was able to sing in English (my third language) . . . . I'm also Catholic and the song put a smile on my face because even we see suicide as a sin, for us is not unforgiving. That commiting suicide is forgiven because the parson to come to such sin (even if egoistical) must have been suffering so much and deserves mercy

Seeing you understand the lyricism and depth metal has makes me happy. Because I’ve been into metal for years and have tried to explain exactly that to people. Sure it’s sounds aggressive and angry but it’s for a reason. When you read lyrics it’s people putting their pain on the fore front and helping realize it is okay to scream and feel your feelings and it’s not a bad thing. That’s why it’s so popular with men. It’s a way to process the pain we go through because we have a hard time showing and expressing it in other ways thanks to society creating a stigma of men being emotional

This song has always meant a lot to me, but when my grandad committed suicide, it hit me on a whole different level. A man whose job was to deliver food after the break up of the soviet union. Russia cut us off completely, so money couldn't even buy extra food as everyone had food tokens. He'd keep extras in his van and hand them out to families that were genuinely struggling and starving, which was illegal to do. He is the most genuine person I had ever known and after he took his life many years later, we had to fight the church in allowing us to hold a funeral for him because suicide is a sin. The tourment it caused instilled an anger in me that SOAD helped me to deal with ,without acting out in an angry way. They showed me that I wasn't alone in my anger. They showed me that many of us can see the hypocrisy.

I'm from Lithuania. I feel like there is so much divide between Eastern European countries, but we all have experienced so many similar struggles. I think we all stereotype each other because of what steps governments took after the break up of the soviet union. Some governments kissed ass and they're very conveniently located on the map to boost themselves.Now they try to alienate themselves from their history. We are one and the same, brother ❤

Regarding the father why have you forsaken me bars, Rick Rubin was just on Joe Rogan discussing those specific bars. Apparently the lead singer was stuck and could not find the lyrics for that section of the song. They were in Rick rubin's Library discussing it and Rick told Serj to grab any book off the shelves, open it up and point to any line and use that for his lyrics.. which is what he did and magically it worked.

I've been watching you foe about 2 years now, and I was a die hard metal fan who hated rap not long before I found your channel. Seeing one of the people who helped me appreciate rap break down the music I grew up on and catch things I never did is just awesome. Thank you Knox. Also cool story about the line "Father into your hands I commend my spirit" was a filler line that Serj picked up from a random page in a random book because he didn't have any lyrics for that part. Which ended up being one of the main highlights of the song ironically.
