Most reactions don't acknowledge the tone change is the for a meaning. Cemetery gates for example, the structure feels like a balance of sadness and anger of loss, but no one digs that deep usually.

Rwanda, Samolia, Romania, Poland, Germany, Russia, Vietnam, Korea, Mexico, Columbia, Brazil, Congo, South Africa, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Syria, Israel, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and a bunch of other places I can’t mention. As I sat in a Hummer full of college kids who all came from middle and lower class families, nobody said a word just nodded their heads along with the song and got ready to go to work. The POTUS is supposed to be at the back, giving orders. The US military is completely voluntary unless there’s a national emergency and a draft is enacted. The poor have the opportunity to enlist for a free education and training. As such, asking why do they always send the poor is a monumentally ignorant question. The answer is extremely obvious to anyone that bothers to take the time to read.

Serj Tankian is the lead singer. He is trained but he was actually a keyboardist to begin with and got thrown into being the lead singer of SOAD, and that was the reason he got vocal coaching. Most singers heard on the radio have some amount of professional vocal training though. Even the "self taught" ones. Tankian-sama still has one of the best, well controlled, and distinguishable voices in music, though. Him, Maynard James Keenan of Tool, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, and Chris Cornell all had the best, most unique voices in rock for a long while. I'd give a shout out in that regard to Jonathan Davis of Korn and Rob Zombie too, just for being incredibly distinctive too, even if, technically speaking, they aren't as prolific or magnificently abled as the former 4.

One of my favorite lyrics from all of System of a Down's entire catalogue is *"You* depend on *our* protection, yet you feed us *lies* from the tablecloth" My interpretation is that this is said from the point of view of a low-ranking soldier on the ground in the Middle East, and he's juxtaposing politicians' insistence that Americans are fighting in the Middle East to protect America from terrorism while simultaneously lying about how well the war is going. And doing it in such a condescending way, as if the soldiers are nothing but dogs and you're feeding them table scraps, but even the table scraps you give them are lies. "You politicians say that we soldiers are here fighting and dying to protect our homeland, yet you lie about the war to the American people, and to us. You tell us everything is going well, that we're winning. From where I'm standing, it doesn't look like we're winning. I watched two of my brothers die yesterday, and I don't even know what we're trying to accomplish here, and neither does my commander, or his commander, or his commander's commander. Are we not human to you? Do we not deserve the truth? Tell us why so many of us are fighting and dying in these wars." Edit: grammar

You hit the nail on the head. I was in Iraq from 2006-2007 15 months and half of my unit listened to SOAD. Our official mission was “Wining the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but in reality we just drove around and got blown up. My unit commander used to bribe the village leaders not to bomb us on certain routes. Tax dollars hard at work.

I'd also argue that, like any other genre, rap can be just as informative or rooted in history. Personally, as a white person, I don't know if I would know about the Tulsa massacre or Black Wall Street were it not for hearing about it in a rap song years ago. EDIT: I guess a better way to say it would be that rap has informed me of a lot of Black history that isn't really taught to us in school (at least, wasn't to me or my classmates).
@DocRobert
@DocRobert 3 жыл бұрын
@@aleindria42 Oh hells yeah, 100% agree. I guess I said “this music” kind of vaguely… I wasn’t trying to give rock or metal some kind of exclusive provenance. When I was a kid, rock was all hair bands and nihilism. The only music I ever heard with anything deep or educational to say was stuff like Public Enemy and KRS-One. Pretty much until Rage Against The Machine came along. And Rage might be a metal band or whatever, but Zack totally spits from a rap tradition so in that regard I think they’re vocally a lot closer to Public Enemy than System Of A Down. But I confess I didn’t know fuck all about the Armenian genocide until Serj and Daron taught me.

Hypnotize and Mesmerize is one of my favorite all time dual albums to come out. Both were huge protest pieces demanding accountability from the government for their actions in a time when a lot of people were brainwashed by public sentiment and rumormongering from the gov't to keep people from questioning and docile while still offering sons and daughters to fight. I agree with dad, there are leaders and there are foot soldiers, but IMO the point being made was that nothing happening was enough to send Americans out to die/ be wounded, permanent mental and physical health issues for.

I had to stop when you started rationalizing towards the end. SoaD’s music is very politically charged and is all about questioning authority and putting accountability on the powers that be. It’s not about making people understand and accept why the government does what it does, but rather making them aware of it and fighting against it when necessary. They want people to start thinking for themselves and not relying on the lies they’re being fed.
@zoegartham312

I totally agree. I could barely stand to listen to the end of the video after the entire musical part had been incredible and one of the best reactions I've seen. B.Y.O.B. is an incredibly deep song. Why DO they always send the poor? It's a comment about the recruiting process of the US Military. If you have enough money or are in college for an education, you have a great deal more freedom to choose if you wish to serve your country or not. Those who are uneducated, who are poor, who can't afford to go to college on their own; they are the ones who benefit most from incentives like "go overseas for 4 to 6 years, and the government will pay for college when you return." It is, unfortunately, also "designer racism," by which I mean that, like most everything else in this country, it will affect people of color and ethnic minorities far more often and deeply than it will whites. With how deeply these systemic problems are ingrained in our society, and the observed lack of willingness by the government to actively try and stop racism and in some places even supporting it - such as the way Republicans got the voting rights changed in (I believe) Georgia to make it harder for certain groups of people to vote under the pretext of making it easier for other groups to vote - I can only conclude that this is done by design rather than by chance, and thus is designer racism.

So they tell us what they think we need and want to hear, and send all the regular joes off to do their dirty work. That way they can just hang back and skirt accountability, chilling in their big houses and hiding behind their positions of power.

The thing is though a lot of rap has Black American History incorporated into it which for Americans, and especially black Americans, it’s well known history so we catch onto it easily. SOAD is an Armenian band so they have a lot of Middle Eastern history in their songs especially the way America has dealt with the Middle East, classism, racism, etc. I really think Prison Song or Mr. Jack by them would be a great song to react to for the lyric’s because the whole thing is them criticizing American police brutality and the predatory, classist, and racist prison system we have and the way our government introduced drugs to begin a “war on drugs” and became “global police”. Absolutely love them and love that they’re still making people question our system and politics

I've always considered the "Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine" section of the song to be a bit of a lure.. into the over all message of the song. It's catchy. And people want to sing it..they don't want to listen to the harshness/reality of the non-catchy parts. As it delivers them a message that they either don't want to hear, or don't like the tone of. Alternatively I suppose you might be able to argue the catchy part is representative of many peoples willful ignorance and compliance when their nations or their people go to war and bring death/destruction on others..

I remember at the time this song came out being so afraid of speaking up against the war in public. How easy it would have been, how... peaceful... to fall into Party Lines with those who held with war. "Everyone's going to the party have a real good time," with the corillary being what happens to those who refuse to attend the party? I remember thinking that listening to music like this on youtube would Put Me On A Watchlist For Being Unsufficiently Patriotic, but the radio was safe because you can't really track who's listening there, and even better was paying cash for the album so no one could link the purchase to you, but the band still got the money. Meatloaf's "Bat Out Of Hell 3" and Disturbed's "Ten Thousand Fists" are both albums with more Iraq War Protest music if you want to do a deeper dive.
