I don't think he's saying he hates hip hop, I think he's saying he hates the current state of the hip hop culture. I actually think the culture is changing for the better and lyricism and positive messages are starting to take over due to the way artists can get music to us these days. They don't have to go through the mainstream gate keepers to make it and it's allowing for more diverse subject matter and I'm enjoying it alot more.

Spot on bro. Tom is making his point, but he isn’t saying he actually hates hip hop. Just like I don’t think he actually believes Eminem is a real clone since Encore (as he says in Cloned Rappers). It’s a metaphor, he has no label so he speaks his mind and a lot of it is symbolic and metaphorical to make a good point. I mean, I hate hip hop is actually musically and lyrically A HIP HIP SONG. Lol

Couldn't have said it better. Knox hill is always spot on with Tom's music even pointing out things I didnt catch. But I feel like he missed the full meaning behind this song. @@_Sawyer_ yeah. I understand his take on it though. Tom did take his shots at certain styles or ways of coming up. Wasn't really necessary to get his message across but at the same time I understand where Tom's coming from too. My take on this song... 1) he's Tom MacDonald... he's not going to accept your labels or your boxes, he's doing it his way. 2) He hates that today's Hip Hop is glorifying ruining the youth, by teaching them that the goal is to be high out of your mind, wearing 10 gold chains, in an expensive car with 3 hoes, a bag of drugs, a sack of cash, a gun in each hand and a body in the trunk beside the shovel. Could he have said the same thing differently? Absolutely. But THIS got your attention. This got you thinking. This got you TALKING. So did he actually do it wrong?

As a massive hip hop fan I don’t see the “I hate hip hop” as literal, to me this song is more about calling out the current hip hop culture which is very toxic while also saying he is his different from all the mainstream rappers in all the sub-genres. I could see why a rapper might take this song the wrong way but as a consumer, I absolutely love it. Today’s hip hop is almost exclusively drugs, money, women, and sex. Yes there are artists like NF who aren’t toxic, but Tom’s different. I’d describe him as punk hip hop, not afraid to be edgy and piss the mainstream off
@amymiller34774 жыл бұрын
I think he was speaking about the specific negative things that current popular hip hop promotes . And you can't really deny that there are plenty of them. Like in Exposure, Dear Rappers, and Helluvit, he's just setting himself apart from those things that he sees wrong with hip hop. Basically saying, if this stuff is what being a rapper or hip hop is...don't call me one. Enjoyed the reaction, as always 😉 Gotta admit, I was waiting for that sting to hit at the first line and you didn't disappoint lol

The visuals in this vid were so dope. Now, we have Tom and Hopsin utilizing a Purge theme. Another banger btw, Hopsin, “The Purge.” I respect your opinion because you’re always so on point and knowledgeable, but I agree with a lot of the other commentators, I feel like he’s attacking the negative aspects of the hip hop culture and people who are capitalizing on genres that they aren’t personally qualified to speak on, but the song certainly grabs your attention and gets a conversation started with that beat hitting so hard and the insane visuals. I think his purpose was to shed light on some of the more negative aspects of each subgenre of hip hop. He's also trying to point out that he doesn't fit in. He's right. He doesn't fit in anywhere. And he says very clearly that you shouldn't take what he said as a diss. It's not personal. He possesses values that don't align with most people. And whether he claims to be unfazed by this shit or not - it has to be pretty annoying, when representing your brand, to have people ask you why you can't be more of this or that. Why aren't you more marketable Tom? Why can't you be less confrontational Tom? As much as I disagree with some of his disses at some of the subgenres, I can't deny that Tom is in his own corner and carving his own path through hip hop.

Well, I'm a year late from this reaction but only recently subbed and going thru your Tom reactions first. Ok, so I respect everything you said, it's on point. However, can you imagine how long and technically boring the song woulda been if he had to nail each specific Hip Hop example? He generalized, IMHO, as most people do and feel about it having grown up with late 80's/90's Hip Hop. As a general wholeTHESE days Hip Hop is shit and has been since the end of the 90's. This does NOT mean there arent a few rare diamonds in that pile of shit, but they are exceedingly rare in comparison to late 80's/90 Hip Hop where you turn on a radio and it's banger after banger hittin the airwaves. Again, SOME are carrying the torch and I respect them for it: Real music, real messages, real purpose. Back in the day you could tell who was singing: voices, beats, and style was unique to the singer(s). These days, it's all the same beats. You can get away with throwing a shoe in the dryer for a beat and autotune someone rippin ass after Taco Bell, change a face, and they call it good. It's crap.

I see this as Tom once again exposing the bad sides of the discourse. Of course he throws out the baby with the water , calling out on all rappers. That's the Tom extreme button/create debate button. There's so much wrong with the culture of songs that glamourise gun and violence, objectify women, equate success to rocking luxury brands. Rappers used to sing from the heart, and I'm sure a few still do, but so many of us are too scared of the backlash in social media and artists are no different. So we need many other Toms, each telling their own truth while reiterating that we have so much in common.

This is now one of my favorite songs by Tom Macdonald and it's definitely my favorite video. Nova Rockafeller is absolutely amazing and brilliant with her video production and she just keeps getting better. Tom and Nova make one hell of a team. #HANGOVERGANG #TomMacdonald #CREEKSQUAD #RHEC

@@KnoxHill Bro, there's going to be a new Tom MacDonald music video this Friday at 9am Los Angeles time. Please react to it ASAP, I have no idea what it's going to be but I want to see your reaction so much! You're great.

Pretty sure Tom doesn't hate Hip-hop, but hates what Hip-hop has become and associated with. Obviously Tom being himself and don't want to be put in some categories. He's an artist and don't shy away from criticism and controversy. Please react to his song "I Wish" it's beautiful and different from his other songs.

Hey. I'm late to the party. I stumbled on a Tom video only last week and I'm making a dash to catch up on all his amazing work. Love your reactions and since you are also a musician you bring a cool perspective to his video's. You asked us to share our thoughts so I'm gonna jump in lol. I have no idea what Tom was or is trying to say with this song. I don't know Hip Hop. I'm not a fan of it. I have no idea how it works or the whole vibe of it, but I know lots of people listen to it. Half the time I cannot even understand the language because I'm a bit older, but I'm here watching and trying to connect with how the younger generation thinks. Phew... that said... Where you loved the video, this is probably the first one I didn't like and it has nothing to do with the creativity or the content, it just hurt my head lol. Too much too fast. My eyes and brain were on content overload it was like walking into a rave. Just too much stimulus. That doesn't make it bad, that just means it's not my cup of tea. So many content creators make videos that jerk around, splice to the beat, flash and pan and keep my brain hopping so I cannot settle on anything. So for me... that is what this song is about. It's about hip hopping from this to that and getting lost in the slurry speech because diction is a thing no one understands. Everyone is different man. If you like that stuff, that's cool. I don't get it, but I don't hate it, and I, thankfully, still have the freedom not to listen to it. But you do you and let Tom be Tom, or... me be me.... I think that is the point of Tom and Nova. Just my two cents worth. Keep doing what you do. Three years in and I enjoyed watching it :).

I love Tom's music, but holy hell the cinematography and the body language that's been used on top of that just puts everything he's done up to this point on a whole different level.

I think every hip hop artist owes Tom some $$ he's resuscitated a art form and brought it to the ear of those that can hear.

I don't listen to rap mostly because of A) repetitive shallow negative lyrical content B) no talent boring music C) no talent delivery ie mumble/auto tune and he hits every one of those points. Probably why I love his music so much.

As someone who grew up with a large group of friends who were all influenced by gangster rap; as a grown man, it definitely had a negative impact on a lot of us in various degrees, some really severe. I still listen to it sometimes, but I also kind of hate it for what it is now.

I think what Tom is saying is that every artist should do their own thing instead of copying things that have already been created. Many people want to be like other people, but what they should be doing is standing on their own mountain.

The only reason why he made this song is bc the way the rap game is now adays and he made it bc he was sick of people comparing him to all different types of rap he wants everyone to know he's different so people will stop putting him in different categories of H.O.G for life

Love your reactions, and starting to listen to some of your stuff. I appreciate your point of view, but if you add in Music Industry it’s the big business and the level of fake. I don’t think it’s hip-hop music or the culture of the people. It’s Hip-Hop(tm) INC. please do the heavy hitters, Gravestones and Dear Rappers!

Tom is a very smart artist. In the song he said that it's not a diss. And it's really not. In his own music he uses all styles of rap, which he mentioned. He was influenced by all of them. And not only rap music, but rock as well. In many of his songs there're rock vibe and atmosphere. I think that "I hate hip-hop" is more about being locked in concrete style or when somebody wants to label artist as country, pop, horror core and etc.
