Worth also noting that a HUGE win for Knulli is the ability to scrape manuals. Turn that off in the default scraper settings or it can take hours to download everything, but when you run into a particularly quirky game that you want some info on, just go into the game settings, set the scraper to grab the manual and re-scrape just that game.

Aidan Aidan Aidan what a fantastic TIMELY video. I have Knulli on all my xx devices and sync them with sync thing. Had to travel yesterday and overnight for work last night and was beyond grumpy to find out on 2 hour journey home today that the SP I suspended yesterday was now completely out of power. Interested to see your take on the two OS's, but I'm heading right back to Muos this weekend on them all. Can't be doing with battery drain when you shut the SP lid

@frooglepete

@@adinwalls I thought it was pretty current but I dig dive into the settings after watching your video and now have everything set to very aggressive, including full shutdown after idle times. I think part of it may also be SyncThing - being away from my home office I suspect the SP was continually trying to connect to something that's not there, so perhaps out and about the key is also to completely disable connectivity. I do adore Knulli and would rather not have to dive in and change everything so I'll keep plugging away.

To upload the ROMS to knulli you can just do that from the standard windows file manager. In the network folder you can access the knulli share partition. Or you can use any free and open source program to access SD ext4 partitions directly in Windows.

The issue you have with Knulli setup starts with the conflation of PC and Windows. I think it's the greatest trick Microsoft ever managed. Considering the audience, people should realise there is more than one operating system out there, we used to have a plethora in the 1980s. I for one went through six in that decade. ext4 is a Unix based filesystem with features beyond what can be done with Windows filesystems. Strangly ext4 is pretty much the low end of Unix filesystems. Obviously the main issue with ext4 for most, is Windows doesn't understand it, and Microsoft are pigheaded about supporting filesystems they don't control. There have been software drivers for Windows to read ext4, but I'm not up to date on those. Paragon Software was one I believe.

No, you can do it with a single sd card. For this, eject the sd card after the first expansion of the partition. Plug it into a Windows PC, format the user partition as ExFat, plug it back into the handheld. Knulli (Batocera) will generate the file structure. Only downside, some ports require manual adjustment of files to work.

For Knulli another (faster) option to transfer (but definitely even more nerdy) is to use a VM with Linux like Ubuntu or Linux Mint, mount the SD through the VM (ex: VirtualBox) and allows much much faster transfers of files and/or roms.

@@adinwalls yes indeed or if one is using linux as their primary OS - that won't be an issue at all with the ext4 partition. EXT4 is faster as well, so there's an added perk for that apart from having much better portmaster compatibility. I was on extFat originally when i started off with my RG40XXH then switched to EXT4 and never looked back.

Gotta add Rocknix to that! I just installed it today, it's pretty sweet so far. It's been out for around 2 weeks. Wondering if this will replace Knulli on the 40xxv for me. I think you're using the old build of Knulli, pre firefly? We don't need EXT4 anymore for Knulli to get ports running properly. Moonlight comes with Knulli since the old version, but it's in the port section. it works! :) I'm confused, man! lol! 15:31 You might wanna add some text overlays to clear up any issues. Ahhh! Glad you had on Kim! But we don't need to use EXT4 anymore. Great vid though I think the info is a little dated by now. Try Rocknix!

Although youre correct, if the drive is formatted in exfat, most ports won't run correctly. There is some issue with portmaster and the way exfat handles playability where as ext4 runs everything flawlessly for the most part. Its in the portmaster discord.

Knulli's use of ext4 is a feature, not a bug. It's the only OS here which doesn't rely on an obsolete and frankly dangerous filesystem. The only reason anyone uses fat32 or exfat any more is because Microsoft has spent decades actively making life worse for users in order to protect its market position. That baggage has been dragging down the entire computing world, and Knulli made the right decision by using something better.
@ilkeryoldas
@ilkeryoldas 9 күн бұрын
I'm not familiar with pros and cons.. why is ext4 better for retro handhelds?
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 9 күн бұрын
@@ilkeryoldas The FAT filesystem is the lowest common denominator, the most primitive and least robust fs still in use. Virtually anything else is a huge upgrade. It doesn't even have symlinks, or a journal, or case sensitivity, or hardlinks, or permissions, or common punctuation, or extents, or fragmentation protections, or ... etc. Really, ext4 is the minimum people should be willing to accept these days, and FAT falls well short of that minimum baseline.

You can do a single card install of Knulli with exFat. Maybe the part you're missing... 1) install Knulli and boot device to create file system 2) put SD card into Windows 3) load disk manager and wipe out the roms partition 4) in disk manager create the new volume, assign drive letter, and name it "share". 5) put SD back in device to recreate the file system (rom folders) 6) enjoy

The latest version of Knulli has big frame pacing issues, at least on my RG40XXH. They set the display driver timings to something like 143hz, so it ruins frame pacing across all systems, you'll either get a late frame ever 4 or so seconds, or an audio pop at the same intervals. I'm always frustrated when there are big issues like this on something that KZbinrs never ever even detect or mention it and I feel like I'm going insane, until I track down a github issue and no, I'm right as always. This is fixable right now if you know your way around SSH and Linux but for everyone else wait until the next release.

@ flashing the SD card for Knilli is not hard. When Knilli is installed everything is already setup. muOS you need to do a lot of adjustments to the setting. Download new skins, adjust how it saves games and how the boots up. Adjust how it sleep and does a full shutdown. Retoarch is harder to setup. Booting to login to WiFi and retoarch before auto populating the game. You also need to add all the box art manually since it has no scrapper. Adding names and box art to the emulators. It’s it more difficult to setup. Please elaborate on how Knilli is more tech savvy and harder to setup.
