Worth also noting that a HUGE win for Knulli is the ability to scrape manuals. Turn that off in the default scraper settings or it can take hours to download everything, but when you run into a particularly quirky game that you want some info on, just go into the game settings, set the scraper to grab the manual and re-scrape just that game.

The issue you have with Knulli setup starts with the conflation of PC and Windows. I think it's the greatest trick Microsoft ever managed. Considering the audience, people should realise there is more than one operating system out there, we used to have a plethora in the 1980s. I for one went through six in that decade. ext4 is a Unix based filesystem with features beyond what can be done with Windows filesystems. Strangly ext4 is pretty much the low end of Unix filesystems. Obviously the main issue with ext4 for most, is Windows doesn't understand it, and Microsoft are pigheaded about supporting filesystems they don't control. There have been software drivers for Windows to read ext4, but I'm not up to date on those. Paragon Software was one I believe.

No, you can do it with a single sd card. For this, eject the sd card after the first expansion of the partition. Plug it into a Windows PC, format the user partition as ExFat, plug it back into the handheld. Knulli (Batocera) will generate the file structure. Only downside, some ports require manual adjustment of files to work.
@MalcolmLim9 күн бұрын
For Knulli another (faster) option to transfer (but definitely even more nerdy) is to use a VM with Linux like Ubuntu or Linux Mint, mount the SD through the VM (ex: VirtualBox) and allows much much faster transfers of files and/or roms.
@adinwalls9 күн бұрын
That is a really good suggestion for those who know what they are doing.
@MalcolmLim9 күн бұрын
@@adinwalls yes indeed or if one is using linux as their primary OS - that won't be an issue at all with the ext4 partition. EXT4 is faster as well, so there's an added perk for that apart from having much better portmaster compatibility. Gotta add Rocknix to that! I just installed it today, it's pretty sweet so far. It's been out for around 2 weeks. Wondering if this will replace Knulli on the 40xxv for me. Knulli's use of ext4 is a feature, not a bug. It's the only OS here which doesn't rely on an obsolete and frankly dangerous filesystem. The only reason anyone uses fat32 or exfat any more is because Microsoft has spent decades actively making life worse for users in order to protect its market position. That baggage has been dragging down the entire computing world, and Knulli made the right decision by using something better.
@ilkeryoldas9 күн бұрын
I'm not familiar with pros and cons.. why is ext4 better for retro handhelds?
@ToyKeeper9 күн бұрын
@@ilkeryoldas The FAT filesystem is the lowest common denominator, the most primitive and least robust fs still in use. Virtually anything else is a huge upgrade. It doesn't even have symlinks, or a journal, or case sensitivity, or hardlinks, or permissions, or common punctuation, or extents, or fragmentation protections, or ... etc. Really, ext4 is the minimum people should be willing to accept these days, and FAT falls well short of that minimum baseline.

The latest version of Knulli has big frame pacing issues, at least on my RG40XXH. They set the display driver timings to something like 143hz, so it ruins frame pacing across all systems, you'll either get a late frame ever 4 or so seconds, or an audio pop at the same intervals. I'm always frustrated when there are big issues like this on something that KZbinrs never ever even detect or mention it and I feel like I'm going insane, until I track down a github issue and no, I'm right as always. This is fixable right now if you know your way around SSH and Linux but for everyone else wait until the next release.
