There's a famous orchestral piece by Heitor Villa Lobos called "The Little Country Train." Of course it was written about a train in Brazil but listening to the hissing exhaust, the thumping air compressor, the clickety clack of the rails, all synchronised, and then the occasional blast of the whistle. it must have been pretty similar, and you can see why he thought to set it to music.

Trains have inspired several pieces of music both modern and old, for me one that comes to mind is "The Moody Blues - I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)" I've not heard the piece you mentioned in your comment, so I looked for it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6O1d3ekiaqobMk - I enjoyed listening to it.

Witaj Tim, pięknie pokazałeś ten malutki pociąg. Ja też chciałabym kierować tym pociągiem, być maszynistą ślicznej lokomotywy. Serdecznie dziękuję,

Hello Tim, the Košice Children's Heritage Railway is very interestinf as sample for Children's Railways in whole, but uses 1000 mm, and not 750 mm track daude uses in more Children's Railways, -- in SU as I known, in particular. This children's railway is laid on a pleasant green area, on the outskirts of the park, and unlike many other children's railway, especially urban, -- it's much more pleasant, in my opinion, to travel. Nice steam locomotive :-) Very nice railway trip again. Thank you very much

Hi Chuck, on the day of our visit children were acting as guards and station staff, only the driver and fireman were adults. I've seen videos and read about children's railways, but I didn't know any still existed.

Hello Tim again. As far as I know, the “birthplace” of the Children's Railways is Soviet Union, and main and largest Children's Railways, such is two railwais: in St. Petersburg (former Leningrad) and in Moscow. They still work today, judging by the Russian videos.

Hello Tim, for me it was surprise to save Children's Railways in Slovenia. I knew that in many countries of the Eastern block, after construct it in USSR, sure after World War II, the Children's Railways was built too. But after about 1991, many of the Child. RW was closed. The Child. RW in Košice is very pleasant, safe and well-groomed. No worse than one of the German Child. RWs, -- alas, I forgot name of the city, and I hardly to finding a link to corresponding video, when I once watched. /By the way, in English-language Wikipedia there is practically no valid information about them.../ P.S. Now I found this link: Dresden Park Children's Railway: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oInTqaF8icuMisk [Part: 1/5] See also other videos on the channel. /But this railway has very small caliber of track daude.../

Hi Chuck, I watched the Dresden Park Children's Railway you sent the link to. Thank you, I enjoyed watching it, you are right about the gauge, it is smaller than I was expecting, more like a normal park railway, although the locomotives were impressive. Take care. Tim.

Hi Phil, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Slovakia is a beautiful country. For this trip I used a Gopro Hero 6 Black Edition. The stabilisation software built into the new GoPro cameras is very good, no more of the jelly effect that plagued the earlier models.

"Most jobs" really meant administration, platform duties and such, but the actual driving of the locos was left to adults.

There's another railway run by children that I've seen video of, but again, the kids do mainly administration and platform duties while the adults get to do the "fun" bits, like drive the locos....awwww gee!

As I understand it, during Soviet times if you you wanted to be an engine driver when you grew up, experience working on one of these railways gave you an advantage.

Eric J's answer sound about right, here in the UK we have similar introductions to potential future employment with the ATC (Air Training Corps), Sea Cadets, Police Cadets and St John's Ambulance. It stands to reason that if a youngster has been or is a member of any of these organisations, they know what there letting themselves in for, so employers know these candidates won't give up after a few weeks because it is not what they expected. Wish there had been a children's railway near me when I was young, although I did drive the trains at my local Model Engineers club.

As I noted, there is another one of these railways, I'd seen the video of it but can't recall which country it's in. It may be elsewhere in Slovakia. Run by children, as far as administrative and platform duties are concerned, but the locos are driven by qualified adults.

Olá, esta ferrovia foi construída na era comunista para ensinar as crianças a operar uma ferrovia real, hoje as crianças ainda gostam de executar muitas das tarefas necessárias para operar trens. Hi, this railway was constructed in the communist era to teach children how to run a real railway, today children still enjoy performing many of the tasks required to run trains.
