With the Lakers entering game 4 looking to tie the series up after a blowout win in game 3, Kobe would put the team on his back by erupting for 42 points on 15-27 shooting the ball, scoring any way one could imagine. After sealing the game with 15 huge points in the 4th quarter, the Lakers would walk away with a 98-90 win over the Spurs and head back to San Antonio in a tied series.

Despite Payton & Malone joining the Lakers, they were past their prime and didn’t contribute much. This game proved that this was Kobe’s team, he was THE guy. He willed the Lakers past this tough Spurs team (reigning champs), let alone throughout the playoffs; Shaq was not as impactful since he let himself go. Kobe was the one who was still hungry to win yet gets criticized for his performance against the Pistons in the finals. The Lakers had no other player who could not only create their own shot but for others besides Kobe; it made sense all the attention was on Kobe. The Pistons forced Shaq out of the paint, him to catch the ball at the free throw line; it forced the Lakers to be out of sync, and Kobe to get up a shot w/ the shot clock running down. It was a mess, but Kobe endured it.

Looking at the Shaq-Kobe feud at all angles. It was clear it wasn't going to work out long term. Shaq was aging and still believed he was the #1 guy and wanted #1 option money, while Kobe was coming into his own and wanted to build his legacy to be like Michael Jordan's. It wasn't like one or other told them they wanted the other out directly. It was clear that Kobe wasn't going to resign because Shaq was there and Dr. Buss had to make a move. Overall, the egos were too big and the duo expired.
