Kobe‘s career high entering the night was 40 which he set in March of 2000. This performance against the Spurs was only his 2nd 40+ as an NBA player, but it was the first of 6 he’d eventually total during the 2000-01 season. Kobe was apparently battling a respiratory illness en route to 43 points. Chick emphasizes this just prior to the court-side postgame interview. He scored 27 of his 43 in the 2nd half, playing all 24 possible minutes.
This matchup between Los Angeles and San Antonio turned out to be pivotal long term. After splitting the season series 2-2, the teams would face off in the Conference Finals. The Lakers ended up annihilating the Spurs by way of a 4-game sweep in which they defeated them by an accumulative 89 points. This included a game 3 by 39, and game 4 series-clincher by 29.

Str8 facts and the Spurs was a great organization too, it’s crazy how good the Spurs was and Tim never won back to back chips. Now that’s competition, which Kobe had to go against being in the West at that time. Now the East is a lot better to bad the East was like it is now back then when LBJ was in the East. Kobe definitely gave you your money’s worth and played hard every game played defense even when his team’s were bad. Picking up point guards full court in the beginning and end of his career.

Afro Kobe was so quick and athletic...showing off the full repertoire of offensive moves. Sensational! The team would not have 3-peated without him. Shaq had obvious mismatches at center in all three finals which is why he won finals MVP in those years but Kobe was just as instrumental as the Diesel.
