One of the best Shaq vs Kobe duels ever! This game being so late in Shaq's career, he really demonstrates his soft touch around the hoop. A seriously underated aspect of his game. For Shaq to come away with the win, with the offense being run through him, and no Steve Nash, facing a championship Laker team... pretty impressive. Kobe did NOT want to lose that game and did ALL he could. Great throwback game!!!

@@Darius_Icewood what I mean by offensive terror is amongst the league leaders in scoring. Kobe was balling but not there yet. 15 in 97-98 season, 19 in 98-99, 22 in 99-00. He put up 28 in 00-01 and never averaged less than 24 after that and was always threatening for a scoring title. I’m from LA and a die hard Kobe fan but I remember when it was Shaq averaging more until then.

Kobe's ability to take over a game was ridiculous, he was an absolute scoring machine... this was vintage Kobe, in his prime, but just imagine if he would've reached this level of play while they were still together. There's no denying they would've been the most DOMINANT duo, but that 3-peat alone proved their dominance... Shaq was a beast inside the paint while Kobe did his damage from the midrange/perimeter, they were a handful for opponents to deal with, and neither one of them could've won w/ out the other. Shaq said it himself, after Kobe's tragic passing, "... our names will always be linked."

With Healthy Shaq&Smarter efficient Kobe=L.A. 11 WCF appearances n 7 Championships 2000-02/2005-06/2009-10 with Shaq being Finals MVP 4x(2000-02&'05) Kobe being Finals MVP 3x respectively (2006/2009-10). I remember this game. This was part of Phoenix Sun's winning streak when both Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire were sidelined with injuries. Phoenix won all those games with Shaq and Jason Richardson leading the team. The thing is, the Suns never embraced Shaq's strengths. Phil Jackson knew from the very beginning that Shaq contributes more to his team if he is the primary scoring option - he dominates near the basket, virtually unstoppable unless double or triple teamed, so, he draws in defenders. That's basically the Lakers's winning formula during the 2000-2002 three-peat. Anyway, going back to Phoenix, the players, coaching staff, and the fans wanted their "run and gun" strategy. Some fans even say that they wanted to stick to run and gun because it was fun to watch, never mind whether they win or not. But that's, not a good fit for Shaq. Phoenix could have been more successful with Shaq in their team if they let Shaq take more offensive shots, like during his Magics, Lakers and Heats (well, first 2 seasons, during the 3rd, the Heats chose to limit Shaq's touches) days. In Phoenix, Shaq was not the first scoring option...that would be Amare Stoudemire. He was not second, that would be Jason Richardson. He was not even third, that would be Steve Nash. If all possessions went through Shaq (like in the Lakers and Magic), and when double teamed he pass the ball to open players, they could have shot more open wide baskets...like what they did during this particular winning streak (when Nash and Stoudemire were sidelined).
