Congratulations on the well-earned PR! That's a huge feat, especially when I saw how hilly LA course is (1100+ ft of gain according to my friend's Garmin). It totally means you're in sub-3 shape. A flatter course and it's yours. Should give you all the confidence!

Awesome result Ko!!! That course is brutal. The hills just keep coming and coming. As for me, you never know what will happen on race day. I developed knee pain in my right leg which prevented me from a good time result having to walk the last 10K but I forgot all about that when I received my finisher's medal. I completed my 1st marathon. I am feeling fine today and my knee is not seriously injured, just a bit tender and painful, especially walking stairs!

Hey Mate, if you get this far in the comments, respect from NZ. Thats awesome, it’s all about the second half, each one is an adventure, and trusting your training. Ditch the camera, there’s 3 minutes (precious calories) right there. If it helps to motivate you, read on. I’ve been there too: it took me 7 attempts to go sub 3. Ended up going under 18 times across a 24 year span, ages 23-47. (PR 2:32). Now age 61 and still doing it, 4:15 last attempt. (63 marathons in total) Make it a lifestyle my friend. When the ability to go fast fades the desire is still there, it’s a different kind of challenge now. Memories,…bore the grandkids. I’d do it all again, no regrets. Kia Kaha (stay strong).

Great job, Mike! My 1st marathon and it was tough but so much fun. Goal was sub 5 hours and did 5:18:58. Not bad for a short fat guy. Phenomenal performance on a tough course. It’s amazing such a mega city has so few sub 3:00/sub 3:05 runners. Paris arguably has more sub 3:00 finishers than any other marathon in the world. London, Berlin, Valencia will be in the top 5 too. Looking at the footage reminds me of sub 2:40 runners numbers in Europe. Rest up and take it easy. As many will have said and probably what you’re thinking, repeat the training and a cool Chicago marathon and you’re in the sub 3:00 club. 😀
