Hullo Harry, I started working with soft pastels a few years ago and Koh-I-Noor were the first sticks I purchased! I have used their color pencils since 1970 and I found their products to be very good to work with! I still use these soft pastels for starting a painting. I have purchased a few other very soft pastels for my top layers, Schminke and Unison are some of the softest, very buttery sticks out there. Yes I know Terry Ludwig sticks are considered to be top of the line sticks, and they are wonderful, they are so wonderfully priced too! I simply don’t have that kind of money for pastels! Thank you for sharing this review with us, even after 6 years it still holds up!

I have this set and I love them! :) They also make another type, Toison D'Or Soft Pastels, just a little bit harder and available in more colors, those are great as well. I really like anything that Koh-I-Noor makes, amazing quality and affordable too.

How hard are those soft pastels?I wanna order some but I'm afraid the extra soft ones are way too soft?thanks!

Not very simple to describe but I'll try :) The soft ones are softer than the Talens Rembrandt, not sure you know the Rembrandts but they are considered medium pastels, between hard and soft. So, the Koh-I-Noor soft pastels are soft, they are very smooth, they blend easily, but they will not crumble and also they will not fill the paper too quickly. I would definitely buy the soft ones as a first set, there are more colors and in my opinion they are easier to control, most of all if you want to do realism. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks for the review! I’m diving into drawing again and the choice of brands and products can be overwhelming sometimes. Videos like these are super helpful in making me decide what to buy :)

Oh 😯 I bought the soft. Three sets 62 sticks. I don't know if they will duplicate in the greys and browns, but if they do I won't mind. I'm adding in some small Rembrandt sets for comparison. I have 12 Hard sticks and really love them too 🎉 Thanks for all the information. I will be replacing them open stock. It takes a craft knife to get a portion of the plastic off... I'm making a swatch sheet with the numbers. It's a little labor but it's protecting my investment ❤ I'm going to add the Extra Soft later as I got a 72 Arrtx set and they are probably most like a Unison.

Thank you Harry for this review and make an another point of them. Jason Morgan make a review of them too, and he said that this soft pastels, feels a bit, like Rembrandt soft pastels; soft and hard at the same time. This is a good alternative of have a great set, with good range of colors. I want to try it too. Thanks a lot as always 🥰👏🏻😇 hope health and good vibes🙏🏼

I love the look of pastels. I haven't got a clue what to do with them really. But they are great! Koh-I-Noor products are lovely.

Tip 📝: There are 11 colours in the 24 set that are not included in the 48 set of extra soft pastels Toison d'Or line, to my pleasant surprise. So if you have both sets, you would actually have 60 unique colours in 72 sticks (12mm X 70mm) and duplicates of those colours that you might use the most. Unbeatable at that price point, and the lightfastness ratings are also fantastic. At least in 🇩🇪 it is possible to buy all colours as open stock, another reason to go with this brand rather than brands that are available only in sets. The 10 extra colours are: 170 Pyrrole red, 32 Light purple, 15 Persian Pink, 182 Dark Violet, 10 Ultramarine Blue, 05 Cerulean Blue, 36 Emerald Green, 37 Light Viridian Green, 16 Light Chromium Green, 07 Permanent green, 52 Medium Terracotta. Thanks so much for the review.

Wow, where can you buy open stock in DE? I am in love with these pastels, it is as great as Schmincke, but a lot less expensive.

How do these compare in color range, as well as softness to Artxx soft pastels. You had done a review of them as well. I like to do landscape painting and was wondering which had the best range of warm/cool colors. Thank you.

I use the koh-i-noor pastels alongside the top of the range unisons because they are good. Their pastel pencils are a great budget version of the much more expensive Caran D’ache pastel pencils. You need 2 or 3 layers on pastelmat before it begins to smudge easily Harry, due to the type of tooth it has.

Can I see your paintings online somewhere? I am very skeptic about this line of soft-pastels. They are just way too cheap. If you have the lightfastness, there is no way to keep them prices so low. Unless you wanna go bankrupt, maybe? :D

Great video Harry! 😁 You are so right, pastel paper makes all the difference. Other paper just doesn't do pastels justice. Your silhouette speed drawing came out beautifully. I hope you are doing well my friend, tc! 🤗

Thanks for this video! I never really even considered this product and now I'm pretty sure I'll get a big set sooner or later. I thought the ligthfast ratings were poor and I know I'm not interested in their pastel pencils, or their products in general. This is perfect, great lighfast ratings and super price, plus how much worse they can be quality wise from other soft pastel sticks, right? Since I'm not someone who will work a lot with pastel in stick, but would find it useful to cover large areas quickly and make pastel pencils last longer, spending a lot of money on more expensive brand soft pastel while I can't even afford the art supplies I will use a lot...yeah. Great review as always! Cheers!

Toison d’or is pronounced like “twah-saw.” At least, the Quebecois pronounce it like that. We French Canadians are weird like that.
