A most excellent review, and timely. My wife just picked this out to replace a very broken down shower door. Thanks!

So it's been a little while... how is the door working out for you?
@ChuckD593 жыл бұрын
@@michaelerbreviews Super, and my wife's very pleased. This is one of those "diamond in the rough" purchases where amidst a sea of pricey, fancy shower doors, a modestly priced unit does very well. After three weeks there have been no leaks on the floor and the door closes very smoothly with little effort. We do have a squeegee (Target carries a nice one made for showers) that we use after every shower which only requires 2-3 strokes. The glass remains spotless. The only downside is I'm even more reminded of the tile work I need to do, now that it's more visible from outside the shower. No regrets though! Thanks for your very helpful videos. How about yours? (and anyone else's?)

@@ChuckD59 I am mostly happy with the door. I do wish I had opted for the thicker glass. My major complaint is the flimsy stop on the hinge is always bending and does not really doing effective job of preventing the door from opening too far. But everything else has been fine.
@ChuckD593 жыл бұрын
@@michaelerbreviews I noted on one of your other videos (where I posted my install notes) that I saw that pin you're referring to and see that it's hollow, and I wonder if you could find a solid pin, if that would be better. The trade-off would be how much more added stress that would put on the glass though. It may be the pin is meant to deform.

My carpenters installed my doors, and I have a leak in the bottom right, I’m going to try your extra flap at the bottom of the door to see if that helps? But my question is the carpenters didn’t use silicone under the framing, And I no longer have the instructions did you use silicone under the framing prior to attaching it to the tile walls, or the outer edges?
@michaelerbreviews4 жыл бұрын
You can download the original instructions from the Kohler website. As I mentioned in my video I did not do the installation of the door myself, it was installed by my contractors.

Reviews, Tutorials & Tech Thank you very much for the reply!
A few more questions: 1) Do you use a squeegee or shammy towel to wipe the glass dry after use? I'm wondering if the glass coating scratches easily. 2) Do you find that your shower walls stays wet longer after you use it? Since this door does not allow for air circulation once closed, I'm wondering if this will lead to mold issues.

jim I use a squeegee and there have been no scratches. Our door does not go all the way up to the ceiling. We have an exhaust fan in the bathroom itself, but not directly in the shower. We don’t have any problem with the shower walls because I use a squeegee on them as well. I also squeegee the tile floor after taking a shower.

The model door at Lowes does NOT swing open far enough to hit the stationary glass. Are you sure you have both upper and lower pivot mechanisms installed in the correct orientation per the instructions? I just purchased 39-44" model, but have not received it yet.

I just took another look at the door's upper pivot and discovered that there is a pin that came out of the hole and that pin is what is supposed to limit the travel of the door when it opens thus preventing it from hitting the stationary glass. However, the pin is easily bent and or dislodged from its seat if the door swings open too far with too much force. At least that's what I think caused the pin to dislodge. I found it laying down flat instead of being seated in the pivot housing. In any case, I put it back in its spot and will see how long it stays put. The door still comes extremely close to hitting the stationary glass.

I've had my door almost 15 months. i too have upgraded the door sweep, buying one on Amazon. However, where i'm now having a problem is with the door jamb. The jamb has flattened so much it no longer provides any friction to keep door closed while showering. I'm wondering if there's a fix to change the scenario. I can't see having to replace the rubber jamb every 12 months. I previously had a magnetic closing shower door, which had no problems over 28 year span.
@michaelerbreviews4 жыл бұрын
I have not had the same experience. So far my door jam is fine. You can purchase a new door jam, or you could try adjusting the space between the edge of the door and the door jamb. I don’t recall the exact spec, but maybe your door was adjusted too close to the jamb and that increased pressure caused it to flatten. Take a look at the installation guide and check. The problem I continue to have is the small pin at the top cam is so wimpy that it is bent over . That is caused by the door being opened, possibly with a little too much vigor causing the door to gain a bit more momentum which the tiny stop pin is not strong enough to handle. Ultimately that momentum causes the pin which is inadequate to stop the mass of the door to bend. The shower door is not nearly as robust as I was hoping.

@@michaelerbreviews According to the instructions, "There should be a gap of less than 1/4” (6 mm) from the wall opposite the door panel." This is prior to installing the jamb.

@@jasanmiguel So is that consistent with how your door is positioned?

Yeah

@@jasanmiguel I had some comments on another of these videos on door adjustment to find that "Goldilocks" point where it's not too tight and not too loose when you close the door. Basically loosen up the top and bottom hinges just a bit and pull the open door away from the hinges slightly, so it's very tight to close. Then I used a dead blow hammer with a plastic head (you could use any suitable cushioned object with some mass) and tapped it gently on the jamb edge top and bottom, opening and closing the door until you found that spot where it kind of swishes close. You may have to pull the door out again from the hinges and retry. Mine closes securely by just a push with my finger. Make sure the edge of the door is perfectly parallel to the jamb and retighten the hinges. If you've been using it and it's been too tight, after 15 months the flange may have flattened out so you may want to start again with a new jamb.

Did the holes for the door jam lie within a grout joint between two tiles? if so, did you drill there or did you create a new hole in the door jam such that you drilled and secured an anchor for a screw in the middle of a tile?
@michaelerbreviews2 жыл бұрын
I don’t recall. I’ve been out of town for several months but when I return I will check. That’s probably not going to help you too much though. Sorry.

before installing the stop did the door want to swing well into the shower (via the pivot cam)? seems like it will break the stop right off with the weight of the door aided by the self-closing action (mine is a 48" shower so door is bigger/heavier than yours).
@michaelerb67326 жыл бұрын
The door does have the propensity to self-close but I never let it swing before installing the stop. Clearly without the stop it would, but why would you let that happen in the first place?
@6cooks686 жыл бұрын
@@michaelerb6732 its not like I let it swing closed from full open position. after getting it in place I was surprised by how far it goes into the shower it is at rest. it's still very much on the ramp of the cam when door is at the normal closed position. obviously that's how it stays closed but seems like it is too much. I suppose it's just worse with the bigger door since the cam pieces would be the same in all the kits.
@michaelerbreviews6 жыл бұрын
@@6cooks68 I never looked at the cam position. I like that the door tends to slowly swing shut but it doesn't even begin to do that until it is 3-4 inches from the door stop anyway. When my door is opened more than 3-4 inches to fully open, it stays open and does not drift closed. It's only once it's moved more to the closed position that the door will swing closed. But it does not swing with enough force to snug into the closure strip, it just rests on the front edge of it But yes, I assume if the strip were not there, the door would swing into the shower.

@@michaelerbreviews ☹ Trying to install one now, the jamb strip is a joke. My shower has scalloped tiles so the two sided taped won't work. I called Kohler and was told no one else has any problems. They said to try silicone caulk to adhere the jamb strip. One big problem is if the jamb strips fails then the door will go into the shower and make contact with with the fixed glass.Poor design!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@michaelerbreviews3 жыл бұрын
@@larrypike3369 You are absolutely correct. There are some real design flaws with the door. My biggest gripe is with the joke of a door stop they have for this. I also have a scalloped tile but not enough to prevent the strip from adhering to the tile. Hope you can figure out a solution. Kohler has been no help to me with my issues other than sending me the updated splash guard.
