Kolkata Riverfront Development Plan
The Kolkata development reveals a blueprint to transform the land beside the riverfront, the Armenian Ghat jetty, which has been vacant for decades.
The development project aims to change the area into a happening spot in the city. It will include repairing important heritage and cultural buildings, developing shopping malls, offices, hotels and banquet halls, riverside parks and gardens, water sports and river excursion activities. It will also work towards renovating abandoned warehouses for recreational activities. All this restoration is to improve the infrastructure of the ghats and jetties. Museums, galleries, and restaurants rank high among the top attractions to be built in Kolkata. Additionally, on the adjoining land at the riverside, there are plans by KMDA to set up a sports complex/auditorium and a multi-car parking plaza. The Armenian Ghat jetty will be restored and renovated so people can take a cruise or ferry across the river. As part of the riverfront development project, the officials seek a public-private partnership to develop three parcels of land along the Hooghly River. Developers will be allowed to submit their proposals. The bidders will have to submit detailed project reports, marketing strategies, tie-ups, and business plans for revenue generation from the plot. The idea is to develop the riverfront as an entertainment hub. The lease available for the property will be for thirty years. The vacant plots are spread across 4,490 sqm. between Strand Road and Strand Bank Road beside the Howrah Bridge. Redevelopment of the Armenian jetty will be a popular tourist and traveller spot with many attractions and leisure destinations. People arriving at the Howrah station currently wait several hours to board a train. This development will make that boredom fun with one hop on the ferry across the river in 10 minutes to shop, eat and enjoy the scenic view.

Why this obsession with skyscrapers? Beautification does not mean constructing high rise buildings, malls, hotels and hi-fi restaurants. If we had more trees and cleaner buildings on the riverfront, then am sure it would look very neat and tidy from the river during a river cruise. Just look at how the one tall building on Chowinghee Road sticks like an odd one out. Moreover even if all the malls and hotels are constructed for so called “tourism” purposes, they surely won’t be accessible to all like it now is. Bengal has lost a lot during the CPM era and now it’s losing its uniqueness in the quest of competing with other metros. As for people talking about Sabarmati river front just making things pretty by constructing some show garden devoid of trees is a crime. Once Bengal stops comparing themselves to others(specially the idiotic Gujratis, the Delhites, the Haryanvis and the UP walas) in the name of “progress” then only will we truly progress

Its possible to make river front beautiful like Sabarmati riverfront, but its impossible to have skyscrapers everywhere like Mumbai, kolkata doesn't have that much real estate value to have so many skyscrapers at a same place. Some more skyscrapers in bypass area can make a nice skyline, like more than 200 meter.

Kolkata riverfront is the ugliest part of kolkata, so you can see there already have no much high rises.......most of them are in Eastern part and some in central CBD. To achieve skyscrapers, river front needs to redeveloped entirely like sabarmati riverfront.... And need to establish some companies at a same area...these all are impossible as those areas are already very congested.

@@bidyutmanna3900 I have observed during 2014-2015 kolkata had 2nd highest number of skyscrapers in india. But now it's lagging behind of any other indian cities. Gurugram,noida already have more beautiful skyline ,banglore , Hyderabad now look more modern with cleaner roads . And mumbai is at top as always. Kolkata is lagging rather far behind in terms of skyscrapers , cleanliness, road infrastructure. Why it's happening? Why other cities can improve but kolkata can't?
