I was in Calcutta in December last year and rode the old trams through the streets in the North of the city. They ricked a lot and were slow, but were wonderful, and throughly enjoyed the experience. Oh, I came from England.

All around the world trams are being reintroduced in the name of light railway because it is a pollution free mode of transport. Modern trams are much faster and they mainly run through the periphery of the city. Kolkata trams has huge potential to run successfully from city center to nearest sub-urban places like Maheshtala, Joka, Budge Budge, Daksineswar, Barrackpur, Madhyamgram etc. etc.

Thank God that these days trams in the Indian city of Kolkata (earlier, Calcutta) are being replaced with the new, modern ones (more than 50 %). I've been to Kolkata several times as it's my native place. I'm staying in Mumbai. It'll remain the Cultural and Intellectual Capital and The City of Joy of India in the same way as Mumbai is India's Financial, Residential, Commercial and Industrial Capital. Just the thing is that the development of Kolkata is lagging because of CPM and the TMC.. #saynotomamata

shutting down tram is against the contemporary urban planning trends. Cities where administration build trams: Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Marseille, London, Moskva, San Francisco, Kansas City, Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, San Diego, Melbourne, Budapest, Vienna, Prague etc Cities where administration build metro: Kolkata. Idiots. Trams can not be replaced by metro because these two transport systems have different roles in the city transport. Tram is good for short distances and daily transport in the downtown, and the high density guarters. The metro is connecting directly and fast the centers of the quarters or functions as a commuter train between suburbs and dowtown. Tram replace to bus is more than idiotism because bus has worse efficiency. Without the short distance part of the transport the metro can't work because people can't approach metro stations.

No body tried to modernise the tram ,it can reduce car hurdels buses and even pedestrians ,a small city like Sarazebo has such a modern tram ,modernise it with the help of Larsen and Toubro and LIC one has technology the other have money !
