The nature of the characters representing countries (and furthermore, everyone seeming to be at least distantly related) means it's nearly impossible to avoid weird implications unless you ship pairings with little to no canon or irl backing. The most popular ship in the fandom is rooted in an alliance between two fascist states ffs. That's why this seems to be the fandom where ship bashing seems both the most prevalent and the most pointless. (This is not directed towards HetaFacts, ofc, I'm just talking about the fandom in general)

I agree with this statement. Hetalia and it’s world building are strange and defies logic. When I try to explain to people who have never watched it they look at me like 🤨. I tried explaining to a friend about Hetalia because they saw discourse on their Twitter from someone they follow regarding GetIta, UsUK, and another I can’t recall. After I was done explaining to them the world of hetalia and everyone’s relationships, they were like “This sounds confusing and stupid af. I don’t care because it all just sounds too illogical to be that mad over.” I don’t see the point in arguing over 99% of the ships in Hetalia, because the series itself defies logic and if wanted to get logical people shouldn’t be shipping anyone! However, shipping is a part of fandom culture so 🤷🏾‍♀️.

In regards to Ameripan, I feel the need to elaborate on Japan's age. I find that a lot of people do not seem to grasp just how old Japan is. Also note I am about to really roast my otp. Japan does not have a stated age, however there is a lot of content to indicate that Japan is much older than America mentally and physically. He talks about how old he feels many times throughout the series. He talks about how he looks younger than he actually is. He talks about having high blood pressure that makes him wake up early and go for morning walks. He has hip pains. The comic where America invites Japan to his Christmas party talks about how America sees Japan as older and wiser than him. He sees Japan as someone who can help him out of bad situations. Japan's patience is reminiscent of a man who has lived many years and as a result isn't phased by much. Granted it does seem to be the case that he is predisposed to this temperament. The fact his age is described as a secret, might also be another indicator of Japan's age. How often do older people evade answering the question of how old they are? If we found out Japan was like physically 35 or older, I would not be shocked. America meanwhile is barely legal 19. He's a freshmen college student. While he may be an adult in his own country, in Japan he isn't one. the Legal age of adulthood in Japan is 20. This is changing to be 18 like it is in the west. America is old enough to do the devils tango in Japan and a lot of other things. But the traditional legal age is 20. So America would be perceived as being more of a child. Going after Japan's natural age may seem like a cheap shot. Everyone is older than America lol. However one should consider the fact that during Japan's 250 hikkiomori phase America went from a fetus to being some where in his teen years by the time of the Perry expedition. I love Ameripan, it is my otp, but of all of the popular and semi popular ships in Hetalia, Ameripan is probably the one with the most egregious age gap. Japan isn't just a cougar in this relationship. He is a bit of a sugar daddy. And yes peer pressure is a problem in this relationship. While Japan isn't completely spineless, its pretty clear he has a problem saying no to America. Especially when it comes to politics. He can't say no when America forces him to open up. He doesn't say no to America's ridiculous ideas at world meetings. I suppose being the junior partner in an alliance with a superpower does that.

It is always refreshing to see people who are critical of the things they love, even if it is a fictional pairing and characters. I hope your comment gets plenty of likes and responses, it certainly deserves it :) I'm also glad I found someone else who sees Japan as an older character, though to be fair I'm not sure what the fandom's general perception of his age is.

@@invadercat3505 thanks. I try my best. I invest too much time in helltalia thinking. I feel like most people probably see Japan as being in his 20s like most of the hetalia characters. I'm mostly familiar with ameripan in this case though. I've noticed people have a tendency to age japan down. I think its because he really fits into that blushing shy nerdy kid trope that a ton of us fans can relate to. Its perfect for your highschool au. Though its hard to say whether or not this is a conscious creative decision for most people or if that's just how creators perceive Japan. I've also seen so many fics that make Japan a virgin. He's over 2000 years old guys. He may canonically not have sex often but I sincerely doubt this man is a 2000 year old virgin. That said though I have seen fanfics that lean into the fact Japan is older than a lot of the other countries.

Glad to know how they massacred weeb boy. I think one of the reasons (atop the ones you mentioned) as to why the fandom de-ages Japan and put him in high school settings is because of his appearance. Making Japan short and thin was the correct choice on Hima's part since it is an accurate portrayal of the build of a regular Japanese person, but it consequently makes him look like a prepubescent. His big eyes and haircut which most boys abandon by age 12 have the effect of making him look very young (though admittedly I like his design).

Things like parentage, environment, pop culture, what you were taught, what people around you believe and how they acted all influenced your current attitudes, lifestyle, and interests. It's the same with nations, only they have significantly longer lives. The reason their relationships with other countries and their beliefs/attitudes/values parallel historic relations and historic beliefs/attitudes/values is because they live alongside history and are products of their time and place just like regular people, but because they live longer their persons change as their cultures, relations, and status in the world change. So you're not shipping landmasses or millions of people together, you are shipping two individuals who are deeply influenced by the changing tides of history and culture. The nations are still individuals and can have interests, opinions, and personal relationships outside of what is common within their populations. If Hungary thinks a hat is cute, it's not because every Hungarian or the majority of Hungarians think said hat is cute, she just likes the hat because she's a person who has opinions and preferences. Nations aren't dictated by their people. That being said, nations are definitely influenced by things like their country's geography and industry, but even then, there is usually an easy comparison to be made between something "nation" and something "human". For example, Iceland is noted to have a hot/cold personality to parallel his island's many volcanoes, which isn't too different from how someone's appearance affects them. Seychelles is very friendly as a result of her large tourism industry, but this can be read as someone's job affecting their personality. The only exclusively non-human, 100% nation attributes they have are how nations exist only if their people/culture do, or how their economy affects their health and physical growth.

I ship 'my' country with anything that breaths xD Like literally. Depending on the time of day, and its quite fortunate that that country is russia since it had some kind of history with half the world it seems. If there was any history with it, i can ship it. Because you can spin that history 180 and it will still make sense. You can take countries like Prussia and America to name a few for example and make them fkn hate each other or love each other or something inbetween and it still makes sense. And thats pretty much it, everything else is just personal preferences. I dont ship other countries tho, but thats just me, i jsut dont find ship without my own that interesting not to mention dont know their history all that well

Germany might not have needed a new body to be "reborn" as a new country (because there was HRE's), but he has not retained HRE's memories (except for a tiny part as we can see in Buon San Valentino), he has a different personality and accent and Italy doesn't seem to recognise Germany as his childhood love (pretends not to?). I hope this makes sense (GerIta is my OTP but the part about HRE is really confusing)
