5 sisters indicted in multi-state $1 million mail fraud and retail scheme

Five sisters are facing decades in federal prison for an elaborate mail fraud scheme that netted them more than $1 million over about two years.
Federal prosecutors say the sisters would make fraudulent returns by pretending to return an item through the mail to get a refund, then returning the item at an actual store to get a second refund.

I don’t really know of many that do… Let alone be big enough to temporarily absorb the risk, and continue to operate while the fraud is caught and investigated, except Amazon. Amazon could easily be a prime (no pun intended) target considering a large volume of their retail business is powered through their Marketplace (I.e other sellers selling through Amazon). Curious to know what online retailer this is.

Because it's good customer service but the real reason why the company was willing to do this is because of the product (active wear). That $100 sports bra costs fifty cents to make so if they don't get it back it's not the end of the world. This wouldn't work with laptops for example because the margins are razor thin on electronics. A $500 laptop cost the retailer like $492 so they're much less likely to do a refund without receiving the item first. On the other hand there's huge margin in gold jewelry. A $500 necklace has like $25 worth of gold in it. That "$1 Million" worth of merchandise is actually worth about $35,000.

I don't know why these retailers don't follow the same practice that Amazon does: the refund is given after they RECEIVE the item. This would have prevented these women getting refunds by showing they had scanned the item in at a post office kiosk - they would only have gotten a single refund per item when they physically returned it to a store.

This was a non violent crime though and they likely do not have prior criminal history. The judge does not have the ability to over criminalize defendants charged with non violent crimes by denying them bond. Most stores do not issue a refund until they receive and verify the return. This could have been prevented if whatever store that was copied the return procedures of other stores.

they had a receipt the scam was to pretend to return as the report said then physically return it so if they spent 100 they were refunded 200 dont see how a recept in person didnt show it was refunded already and they must have used many credit cards with 5 crooks so they used the usps for the scam

As much as I think I agree with you on civil asset forfeiture, this is more a case of criminal asset forfeiture as there is actually a crime alleged and charged. Civil asset forfeiture needs to go away in its entirety; I have no idea how it can logically be determined to be constitutional.
