Ableton is great but I think Maschine and the Kontrol S61 really make the best combo. From what I have read I think Maschine is the only software that utilises all the features (incl Colour lights) of the keyboard controller!

This video really doesnt help mate, how do you configure the S61 to Ableton??? I have selected Kontrol from the MIDI options but none of the transport controls work?? they dont even light up?

i don't remember the details, but there are tech articles on the NI site about how to configure ableton, this was a demo of the features not a setup guide.

Akai apc40 or ableton push2 hands down. For control I have managed to integrate everything together, novation s61 , NI s88, apc40 and push2. Native instruments ableton scripts have to be integrated into the ableton scripts folder, you have to specify native instruments as a surface controller then it should integrate the scripts with ableton. Meaning you can use your s61 for vst control as well as track selection and mixer controls for ableton. Which is very good.

When you say “ you can use your S61 for vst control”, do you mean with the midi cc mode, or in the same way as the Push 2 where your mappings can change dynamically depending on what plugin you have selected?

I bet the Komplete Kontrol is using the Mackie Remote protocol. I us a Korg Nano Kontrol Studio with Cubase which is setup that way. Ironically it comes with an Ableton live lite license which I have installed but Ableton is so different from Cubase in the way it works. The Komplete seems to have the ability to display custom graphics, I always wondered how that that is implemented (special drivers perhaps).

I’ve been using a Novation LaunchKey 49 MK3 in my studio, and it’s out-of-the-box integration with Ableton and Logic is second to none. It even has ‘mouse keys’ - arrows for navigating around. But, 49 keys is too few for the NI instrument key mappings for things like articulations, so I’m about to buy a Komplete S61 for a couple reasons. You CAN use any midi controller with NI software, but the workflow is much easier with an NI keyboard and light guide. Merging the Ableton or Logic world with the NI world is the challenge, but my conclusion is that having both a Novation Launchpad X and a Komplete S61 midi controller offer the best. 😁

don't overlook the launchkey 61, i agree about the integration. ni controllers work best if you use their komplette kontrol to host all your plugins.

I also have the launch key 49 mk3 and it’s nice except for the horrible keybed. It’s bad bad bad to me. Was eventually going to do an SL mk3. I primarily use Ableton and I had a Machine that I sold and bought a Push 2. I use the NI stuff, but play a hammer action board, no room for the KK 88

@@ckatheman I had low expectation of the LaunchKey keybed, and it’s better than many others I’ve tried. Piano players are more picky about the keybed, and while I was classically trained, I prefer semi-weighted synth-style keys for playing most sounds. The 49 makes a reasonable control surface, with its pads, encoders and faders, and transport controls. When I bought it 2 years ago I was more interest in the control surface features than the key feel.

@@WoodyPianoShack I have owned a launchkey 49 mk3 and the keys are good. Just no after touch, the integration on the launchkey mk3 is actually better for two reasons than my novation sl61 mk3 those reasons are UNDO and QuAntize. The sl61 has undo but you have to hold down shift key two button presses instead and no undo button. However with launchkey the display is tiny. The NI s88 or s61 has an undo button and quantize button that also work. In the end I programmed an Elgato stream deck to use as a quantize button. Yes that works too.

@@ckatheman have also decided between days and advice and forum for the novation sl61 mk3 because of the function and variety. sure I use almost 100 NKS from NI and like them totally but I like the variety of novation and I miss drum pads and some what the novation has in addition so I decided for it. should come tomorrow am curious how it is.

NI has good Ableton integration but nothing quite matches Novation's controller keyboards. Launchpads start so cheap there's no reason not to add one to whatever keyboard you're using, too.

yeah, i agree with that. i think the lp mini would sit quite nice on top of the s61. it strange to me that lp do not have transport controls, but these are on the s61, so compliment each other well

@@WoodyPianoShack Hi Woody - I have exactly this combo of S61 and LP mini MK3 on top at the right. Fits perfect and very complementary for loop-based recording. I use with Logic Pro for Live Looping. To really make this combo powerful, further customize the S61 programmable buttons to add additional functionality such as track duplication. With this setup I can easily spend 30 min creating a scratch song without ever looking at the screen or touching a mouse. With a Logic template shortcut setup on the desktop for quick access, I can usually be up and running within 15 seconds if inspiration strikes.
