Congress was still breathing down Nintendo and Sega's neck going into the biggest year of the fourth generation of gaming. A new line up of home consoles was just around the corner and the final battles between Sega and Nintendo were beginning.

There actually *was* a weird Sega/Nintendo collaboration years before the ESRB. Some units of Nintendo's 1979 arcade game Sheriff were manufactured by Sega. Weird but true. I remember this time rather fondly for all the experimentation going on in the console market, but so little of it seems worth it in retrospect. Sega's lock-on cart was a good way to supply expansion content for older games, but they never used it again for any other release. Super Gameboy was one of my favorite accessories, but I think I was alone in that among my friends. I actually liked playing the Gameboy titles on a big screen, and seeing as my actual Gameboy handheld at the time had busted itself, the SGB became my defacto Gameboy. And I didn't have to angle the light to see what I was doing. Sega CD had a lot of potential, but my buddies all saw it as a gimmick with either FMV games or Genesis ports with negligible sound-enhancements. I was one of the few in my circle of friends who knew about games like Lunar, Snatcher, and Shining Force CD. If you're really shrewd with how you collect for the console, the Sega CD has a surprisingly good amount of decent games. I thought it far exceeded the 32X.

Bro by the time Sonic and Knuckles have come out Nintendo had thoroughly kicked Sega's his ass. Sonic and Knuckles wasn't even close to the mega-hit Donkey Kong Country was in fact Donkey Kong Country was so important to the industry all the other console manufacturers were trying to play catch-up

In March of 1994 Sega had 8 of the top 10 best selling games that month in North America. Absolutely asinine for Sega of Japan to want to move on from the Genesis outside of Japan. Note about game sales numbers is that Japan didn't have a video game rental market so their attach rates "number of games sold for consoles owner were much higher". Then you consider the SNES sold 18.5M units compared to the Genesis 3M units in Japan and it you sales figures that weren't indicative of the North American market. This is for anybody wondering how Sega was still ahead in North America at the end of 1994 with Sonic and Knuckles selling about 2M copies and Donkey Kong selling over 6M.
